I built NICE PAIR in 1985 as a weekender coastal racer/cruiser and she has had a life...stolen in Florida when new, spotted in the Turks, spotted in the Virgin Islands, found in PR, US Marshals seized in PR, tied up in PR two years in Federal Court, sailed to the DR to work as a day charter boat, sailed to Belize to do day charters, sailed to Florida for a refit, sold to guy in Michigan who broke the original wing mast and bought the mast it has now, sold to Bruce Geffen in Michigan who won more races over 12 years with her than you can count, sold to a collector of famous boats in Reno and raced twice in the Race to Alaska, sold again and now off to a lake in Texas...wow. www.offshorecatamarans.com... check it out

Michael, there is so much to like about Nice Pair. You know that feeling when you step onto a boat for the first time? Ya, we had it. We felt a certain sense of wanting to take care of this boat, this inanimate object. It's crazy isn't it?! We fought long and hard with the seller to try and come to a reasonable agreement. (+6 months of negotiating.) We even agreed on a price at one point and thought the boat was ours! We were over the moon. Most of our sailing experience has been on multi-hulls, and we really liked the concept you had of adding a deckhouse as an eventual option. We're young and don't need much for extended voyaging. A hard-topped dodger and she would of been our dream minimalist Bahamas boat. And the fact we could pop her back on the trailer if we wanted to zip back up to the lakes was icing on the cake. I've been following your 60' build and love the new hulls. Our long-term goal is to build and I really like your design. We''ll be in your neck of the woods this winter, I'd love to sit down and chat with you at some point if you're open to it.

Ditto, so many couples out sailing nowadays, doing KZbin (without kids) and there’s no closeness between them at all.. I get some are private and don’t like pdoa but some are just so distant, an arm around a partner who’s a foot away and she/he doesn’t even lean over: maybe it’s the long boring passages over a few years? Eleven years and you both still glow, a good sign the dream won’t destroy that... to say you guys are on the same page would be an understatement and so nice to see. Off topic a bit... I never get the players with multiple partners, one must be the best of however many so how can anyone even think that being with anyone else is fun when fact is it’s second or less best (just my view of that part of life) I wish but at 64? A wealth of health and happiness to you guys: this vid is a bit old now and the first I’ve seen so I’ll be trolling KZbin to sea (pun intended) where you’re at.

Just wanted to let you know how much my wife and I are enjoying your adventure in sailing(and life). We are not sailors. But love the water. Live in the Pacific northwest and found this episode very interesting. Especially your stay on Orcas Island. Good luck and enjoy life.

Nice video, you two seem sincerely nice. I have been sailing since 1975, my wife’s favorite of our boats was the last we purchased, a 32 foot Fountaine Pajot catamaran. No heeling thus no anxiety for her. Your trip wasn’t wasted, look at the nice places and people you met. That boat would have been a huge project, and boat reconstruction is fun but sailing is more fun. And the weigh of a bridgedeck house may have made performance suffer too much. Good decision. Now you’ve hooked me, I look forward to what you have done after that adventure.

As a sailor of 40 years starting at 5, giving away my age. As soon as you entered the port hull I had my fingers crossed you didnt buy her. She looked gr8 but soooo many patches cracks and peeling O plus bogged up or what. Its a blessing. Being in the US you have so many boat yards with boats you could sell here in Australia for thousands and they sell there for 100's due to the huge market and shear numberof neglected boats. Look forward to seeing what you get of you haven'talready bought. Hey dont disregard the Wharams they would be the most built boat in the world, cats anyway, and the way the walk over the larve swell and the cost of up keep being peanuts great world cruisers. Boat owner and sailor here. Massive bullet dudged. Do not try to make a boat something it is not. No mater how cheap it is to buy. Making the changes to that boat to make it a liveabord would also kill any acutal vaule of the boat. Hold out for a boat that is 90% of what you want.

Hi Hi! Good seeing you again! I am the former owner from here on the Great Lakes and the one who renamed the catamaran "Nice Pair." We sure had tons of fun on her all over the Great Lakes, whether we were racing or cruising or day sailing. I would live aboard her for most of the summer months. "Nice Pair" looks a little different than when I owned her. There was a bit more of a more accommodating set up down below in both hulls, though quite bare. The owner that bought it from me and was trying to sell her to you went through and did a really excellent job of structural upgrades and updates. She is, after all, 32 years old being built in 1985. In the end, I am glad you ended up with the boat you did. "Nice Pair" would have been quite a project, though rewarding. She would have made an excellent cruise/live aboard if you had more time and expendable cash. The most important thing for me was that you did get a good vibe from her, and she made you both feel comfortable and at ease. I am looking forward to your next installment. All the best!

Hey Bruce! Thanks so much for filling in the gaps of Nice Pair's history. Sounds like she was outfitted perfectly for your adventures while you owned her. She is definitely a cool boat (was she not, Kirk wouldn't have pursued the deal for so long! ;). Very much hope she ended up in good hands.

Hi I'd suggest a boat as big and heavy and closest to turn key that you can find. that is if you intend to sail offshore. multi hulls are extra pricey. maybe a tired wood boat like a piver, Cross, or searunner ? British glass boats like Apachee, Comanche solaris, etc are harder to find and probably clapped out by now. old clunky monohulls like westsail are opposite of nice pair but you may come to really like the rugged seaworthiness. keywords strong heavy.

Yeah it seems maybe a little too on-the-nose but it still would have been great if you got that boat along with a couple of spirited cats that loved to sail. Then whenever you're in a crowded harbor and someone suggestively shouts out "nice pair!" as they are looking at your girl, you grab the cats with a smile and hold them up and yell back, "thanks!" Almost as much fun would have been if you would have completely lined the Interiors with thin, tough wall- climbable carpet. Add a laser pointer and/or crazy angled sailing conditions and you end up with some genuinely memorable cats on a cat videos. 😁

Nice vid. Yep the cat needs work as you found out. I owned a Reynolds 33 high performance cat and love love loved it. Super fast, strong, and durable. I did finally sold it and moved into a small trailer-able monohull with cabin, Hunter 212. The cat had cabins but the 212 still had more liveable room. Love it but the speed is not there, still enjoyable. However I sail Hobie Cats and the UFO (can see on my website at funtosail.com) to get all my speed fix. The UFO is insanely awesome. I run a sailing school and sailboat dealership in Hayden Idaho among the large lakes (we have a navy base on one of the lakes).

It really depends on where you would be sailing, but I wouldn't vouch for comfort, especially on passages that are longer than a day or two. Night watches on an open deck with wind and water blowing relentlessly in your face and nowhere to shelter... As someone who grew up sailing racing boats and had the chance to live on a boat for 2 years I would say that comfort over speed is the key for good times! In my opinion there is no point in going fast if you are not going to enjoy it too. Hope this comment helps you guys! Good luck and fair winds

Strange you would fly all the way to Orcas and drive to Mexico when there are more boats between San Diego Bay and Marina del Rey than anywhere else in the north Pacific. Looks like you're on a budget, so make life easy for yourselves and invest in a nice monohull.
@SailingSoulianis7 жыл бұрын
We're smitten with catamarans (Lauren gets seasick easily -- just one reason we like multihulls) and you're right, we are most definitely on a budget, so we were willing to take a chance on these cats even though both were a trek. However, gas wasn't terribly expensive and we managed to get fairly cheap airline tickets; and like we mentioned in the videos, we love to travel and hadn't been to either mainland Mexico or the PNW, so we figured, why not go.
@twiper7 жыл бұрын
If you want a cat buy one there is over 40 foot to be sure it's safe for ocean cruising. One too cheap is not a good idea in the long run.

So are guys still looking for a boat? If so what are you looking for? Thanks, nice video.
@SailingSoulianis7 жыл бұрын
We're working on our next episode where we talk about this a bit. This was the last cat we looked at. We've been searching for boats since February and decided we just need to get out on the water, so we're looking at monos and will buy the next boat that looks close to being ready to go.
@bill4nier7 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, maybe a dumb question, but is your limiting factor the price of the boat? After watching your video I jumped onto a few site I knew and did some searching. I also assume you want a boat already on the west coast vs having a boat sailed/transported to the west coast. However there's still a fair selēction on the west coast.
@SailingSoulianis7 жыл бұрын
Yes, unfortunately we didn't get involved in any major tech startups, didn't buy bitcoin in 2011, nor do we have a trust fund. We're just working hard to see our dreams come true as quickly as we can. We're going to be working while we travel, as we want this lifestyle to be sustainable. So we had a pretty strict boat budget of $35-45k, and needed to leave a little left over for upgrades. We've actually left California for the Midwest to be closer to where we'd like to start our sail. Keep an eye out for our next episode -- we head to the Midwest and look at some classic monos.
@bill4nier7 жыл бұрын
Did a little research, here's the website: www.sailboatlistings.com found a few Cats (30'-37') that might be of interest and a ton of monohulls 2 in particular 40' Morgan & 45' Starrett. All the best!
@SailingTaranto7 жыл бұрын
Good choice to discard that vessel IMHO. Racing boats tend to have the hardest lives and the biggest streeses put upon them over their lifetime, so an older lighter heavily raced vessel could well have many issues waiting to surprise you both. And no sink?! :-) Cheers and good luck with the search.
@SailingSoulianis7 жыл бұрын
Lol, there was previously a sink, the owner had just pulled it out for the R2AK. Simple systems are best in my book. A 5 Gallon jerry can with a foot pump and a sink that drains straight out the side doesn't have a whole lot that can go wrong with it.

@normanhosford25067 жыл бұрын
Since you two come from inland scow country, I'd expect you to also consider a fast monohull. You have been vague about your budget but maybe an older boat type with a history of offshore racing like a J120, Olson 40, or Santa Cruz 40 could meet your need for speed and budget. A boat that can recover from a knockdown is far safer than one that can't. Any of those offshore racers will have sister ships with IRC certificates and stability numbers for them. You would like to feel that if you go over 120 degrees or so the boat would come back up again. My feeling is that you should never be just two mistakes from disaster especially when one of them might be believing a weather prediction.
@SailingSoulianis7 жыл бұрын
Most of our sailing experience has been multi-hull oriented. That said this is the last cat we looked at... The market is just to slim right now and the only options in our price range are gemini's and catalacs, which I wouldn't consider a true option. So we've decided in an effort to get on the water as fast as possible, we're turning to monos. We're not really looking for a blue-water tank for our first boat. We see this more as a progression. Our first boat just needs to be something that can take us safely through the Caribbean - we'll likely upgrade before crossing the pacific. So while we obviously want something safe, we're going to be spending the next two years doing short passages and will always be less than a couple days away from a safe harbor.
@normanhosford25067 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to read you are in fact considering a mono. A boat that cannot be righted after its mast hits the water is a scary prospect in the middle of the ocean. Years ago I used to race a Hobie 18 but it was easily righted. I hope to enjoy your adventures.

Bruce Geffen I have no doubt that it's a capable sailboat. I was specifically looking at it from a liveaboard perspective... Doing a big crossing on this boat in my opinion, would be a nightmare. To each their own though. I'm sure people live on and make major crossings on boats less comfortable than this. How fast did you get her when you were racing?
@BruceGeffen7 жыл бұрын
No worries, Chris. I was clarifying for all and giving the perspective from owning her for almost 12 years. The fastest we had her was something like 28 or 29 kts., but some on board during one race said they saw 30+.

Don't know what you've set for a budget. Possibly consider a Trimaran. That boat would have to have been kept extremely light to keep the performance. As long as your going light, check out an F-boat or Corsair. Something like a Corsair F-31 Ultimate cruiser - Example: www.sailboatlistings.com/view/67554 or a Corsair 37 - Example: www.sailboatlistings.com/view/69858 Good luck with your quest!

We actually made an offer on "Peace" a few years ago! Wharrams 38 & 46 were on on our short list.

that's cool have you thought about building your own ?I went to a boat show this summer and the cross lake yacht club had a tiki21 pre cut kit for visitors to assemble and it was optimized for fast building by first timers,and the guys at the sail yes channel are selling their norm cross trimaran for 48 k or best offer.put in another 30 k and you will have a proven world cruiser,anyway its a exciting but stressful,hunt I'm glad you are taking us along for the journey

We have, but we really just wanted to get on the water. We'd love to build our own one day!

Oh, xxxt, any boat up Seattle has been rife with mold. ????????????Clean up and re-up will seldom get rid of it. (heated cabin in cold weather condensation everywhere you can and can't reach)

Set me straight. Aren't dagger boards supposed to come from outside in and not inside out please excuse my ignorance don't know a lot about cats.
@SailingSoulianis7 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely... That was one of the peculiarities of this boat we had reservations about. Maybe Mike Bell can chime in on this, he's the builder of Nice Pair.
@istra707 жыл бұрын
Quite few famous catamaran designers place the dagger boards this way. The theory behind is that these will dig in if you are on the slope of the wave ( especially while flying windward hull). Also some use mast for lifting them. In marina - they don't stick out . If the boards angle is from outside in - you would have a skid or a drift downwind - down wave ..(especially when flying windward float). But this is all theory ...... There is a lot of designers who prefer opposite (and me personally too) - I think it is safer. Better to have skid downwind ( downwave sideways) then flip it over in a gust. World best hydrodynamic analysis have Groupe Finot and they have dagger boards from outside in . I found your ideal catamaran ..........kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZ_TqZaop7ymjsk .... just start saving ...and get few sponsors. Good luck....

istra70 we love the sig45. It is a huge inspiration for a lot of discussions we've had about what we wanted in a boat. We'd love to sail one of them one day.

Not a liveaboard. At most a lunchaboard and emergency overnight. Are you going to live or play? Both of course, but this is only for play.
