I'd say that split sprocket is wobbling at the spits and catching the chain in it and breaking it.should try a solid one and see if that works.😊.

My thought would be the split sprocket expanding away under the centrifugal load, putting a bigger gap at the joints and stretching the links under load.
@MountainEagle77
@MountainEagle77 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the insight, guys. After reading your comments, I think you're spot on about the split sprocket being the issue. It sounds like the wobbling or slight misalignment at the splits could be causing the chain to catch and eventually break, especially at high speeds like 100 mph. The idea about the centrifugal load expanding the gaps makes sense too-those forces might be enough to stretch the chain or create more slack, leading to failure.

This and need to step up chain size. They are using chain rated for 5 maybe 10 HP on a 40+ HP engine. Frankly I'm surprised a chain that small passed inspection.

Right maybe run a 520 chain I have a dirt bike with about that hp ripping wheelies and doing 80-90 on the highway just hit 5k miles with that chain and it still looks good I'd say keep it simple use what every motorcycle on the road is using solid sprockets and a 520 chain(Id use a oring chain RK or DID don't use cheap chains) that should handle it no problem

I was watching from the start area waiting to run and saw that chain break, Ike did an awesome job keeping it upright. It looked way sketchier in person than the video conveys. #35 chain is your biggest problem. The power pulses of a 50+ hp. motor is enough to rip that chain apart as soon as the clutch locks in (and from the looks of it, that's exactly what's happening). Go to 420 or even 520 motorcycle chain and sprockets, and you'll eliminate your weak link, and most likely, make a spectacular run! Good luck you guys.😉👍👍

A friend of mine who's now long past, once said that if your running a rear sprocket that's an even number of teeth on a single cyl' bike you should NOT run an even drive sprocket as it sets up strange harmonics that chew things up, He proved it on an other friends KLR 650 which had a problem with chewing up sprockets, as soon as we changed the front cog to an odd number of teeth the carnage all went away, to say that we were surprised was an under statement....

Absolutely love this vid and its a whole new level for the channel! I wanna get technical right now...the bully clutch is a decent product but i worry about the Chineseum unfortunately built into the product. That primary sprocket should have never let go. Its not like you're rig is heavy and overpowered. Your team did seem to do your research and you were pretty darn well prepared from what i can tell. What i cant tell you is how proud i am of you fellers pulling this off! Y'all did so well under the circumstances and i couldn't be more happy for the whole gang but especially John and Ike. Stick a camera in the frame pointed at the chain and sprockets, one by the engine and one in the rear by the rear tire. I agree with the comments below on the split sprockets, definitely steel split if they make them and solid steel for sure. From there a bigger chain. The cameras will tell you if it's a chain control issue or a sprocket issue. I can't wait to see the next episode. I looks like a totally amazing experience. Thanks for sharing!

I'm really impressed with your determination and creativity. Bonneville is a strange world. I ran there once in my 1968 Charger and the salt was not in very good condition. It had a very thin crust and crumbly underneath. It was very difficult to apply full power and the wheelspin was always a problem. At 140 MPH it was still slipping and scared the crap out of me. I could not ever get all the power down and kinda bailed. Waltzing around at high speed like a hog on ice convinced me to stop while I still had a car to drive home. I wish you all the best and hope you get home safely. I look forward to more of your creative adventures.

C+Cs, I was with my brother and his business partner at Bonneville in 1972. They set a 125cc record running the 3rd engine, one didn't run the other ate the cylinder. Because of a paperwork glitch on the part of the Speed Week officials their record wasn't official. They were invited back to do a makeover run for no entry fee but couldn't afford to close their Cycle Shop for another week! Bonneville can be a punishing place! Better luck next year!

Speaking from similar experiences at Bonneville, I'd say your issue is the length of the chain run. We were shucking chains, among other problems, on a couple of bikes with similar long runs. The solution for us was nylon sliders above and below both the upper and lower chain runs to keep it from slapping up and down at speed. Once we did that, the chain issues went away.

Hey guys, you are still making some of the best videos out there! Your chain issue is normal for failure its length. The chain tries to be round, centrifugal force becomes incredible. The chain gets pulled apart. That is why drive shafts are used in high speed equipment, and long timing chains have those long channeled guides. I hope this helps, I am certain that this is the problem.
@trevorfoy6307

You may not have reached your goal, but what you have done is very respectful and impressive. This is your first attempt, there are always glitches that come with it. Obviously no one saw this coming or they would have made a comment on it during construction of this project. I know I didn't see this coming. I've seen what I consider some good suggestions on the cure for the problem. Solid sprocket on the rear as well as a heavier chain are what I would say. Just by listening to Ike, I'm convinced you can achieve and possibly exceed your goals. Good luck. I will be waiting to hear how you do. Great video regardless. I will be praying for you guys. Smile Ike, and happy birthday. You got this! With a lack of knowledge on what all the factors are that are involved with the chain issue, I think frame rigidity may be a factor. First time I've seen why this place is popular with some. All the other like minded racers,drivers, designers all in one place at the same time. It looks like a fun experience even for us that don't do it but like it. IKE GOT TO TEST A MINI BIKE THAT HIM AND HIS FRIENDS BUILT AND DROVE ON THE SALT FLATS!! That's got to be awesome

Hi guys. It's not the 'power' of the engine that is killing your chain. It's the chain-'slapping'. Surprisingly strong forces in that. ( I know a bit about this stuff. I hold two motorcycle records at Bonneville )

I think I said a long time ago, you guys need a real high hp motorcycle chain, and sprockets. The important thing is, you guys are having a go at it, and taking it seriously. And you are doing it with your dad. You'll learn a lot, no matter what. Bonneville will change ya. You'll be able to use the lessons you learn at Bonneville, throughout your life, both in how you think about building machines, and living your lives. Bonneville is a richly spiritual place. Many of the fastest machines to ever travel the surface of the Earth, did it right under your own bike's very wheels..

This is one reason thumpers use cush drives on the rear wheel. Tames the impulse from the single cylinder and uses it more efficiently over the entire stroke.

Oh man the struggle is real!!! You keep plugging away at it and you will get there. I understand the frustration that Ike had when the second chain broke.

I have to say, it seemed almost appropriate for the goofy bike at 16:46 to be doing silly things like dropping junk on the track at the cusp of a top speed run.

The guy borrowed an umbrella from the starter. He dropped it on the ground when he took off. Had forgot he left it on the side car.

@@WyFoster 👍 Having such a narrow rear wheel base would be gosh awful dicey at high speed, surely. *edit, maybe it's the camera angle that makes it look so narrow.

Fingers crossed for you guys! Here's a thought - next year try to find a Bonneville wagon to haul your land speed bike to Bonneville! I bet Kevin over at JYD can help you out, if there's nothing in your area!
