Racing TT Assen on a Honda CB500x !! [S4 - Eps. 2]

Unfortunately, my travel plans all went into the bin because of new lockdowns and second waves everywhere. So, I've decided to make a video series about the motorcycle scene in The Netherlands. In this episode, I got the extreme luck to ride on an empty TT Assen race track, while getting race lessons from race legend Barry Veneman himself!!
Despite the typical dutch weather, it was an awesome day and great way to get a peak behind the scenes of the Dutch motoGP.

1) There is nothing "wrong" with her bike. 2) What tyres would you recommend for the wet track condition? I think she is still riding Pirelli MT 90's, while not the "best" my guess is that for the wet track they may be better than high end dry race tires, yes there are special "wet" race tires that may be better, but the track guy said that the bike they prepared for her did not have "wet" tires in it.

Not even close to season one when she squeezed between a truck and the bank of a raging river on the Iran-Afghanistan border. The road was mostly potholes and the bank looked like it could collapse at any time.

@@ItchyBoots Now there's a long job for a rainy week: going back through past series and adding subtitles...;) If you ever get the chance, you must visit the Isle of Man for the TT races, preferably the Classic TT and Manx GP (usually last week in August, first week in September). Absolutely brilliant super-friendly atmosphere, fantastic 'Manx' hospitality and some legendary racing...there's nothing like it anywhere else in the world. (I'll guarantee you won't have to buy your own drinks, wherever you end up on the island)

Noraly is truly unstoppable. Not even the Covid lockdowns can keep her from making awesome videos. And then on to Northern Europe including Iceland and the northernmost tip of Norway. And now she’s doing a whole new series on racetracks and the motorbike racing community. I remember visiting Assen for the 1980 TT Grand Prix. My wife and I stayed at the EuroMotel in Groningen, with many of the riders and teams. We then rode into the circuit on my Suzuki GS1000 and after parking, with tens of thousands of others, we sat on the Struben Tribune bend and saw Mike Hailwood do some demo laps, on the 297cc Honda six. That sound!!!! We were mad keen Barry Sheene fans but his Yamaha packed up, after less than 20 laps. I do remember that second place was Valentino Rossi's Dad, Graziano Rossi, but the Dutch went home happy after Jack Middleburg won. A great experience.

You discussed his challanges, successes and courage and he immediately mentioned "You know it's not Norway, it's not Peru, it's not Alaska..." highlighting your accepting challanges with little hope of support, successes in difficult situations (and FILIMING IT!), and courage in outrageous circumstances. Life's been terrific thru education, incredible good friends and family plus good luck past anyone's dreams. Rode bicycles and even a few Harley motorcycles but nothing like your videos :) Attitude and getting up from many, many spills is the key - along with trying not to make the same mistakes twice. I first went to Assen TT in 1966, the year the IOM races was cancelled. The race control was a green wooden hut type building. The course was longer and perhaps more difficult. The riders bathroom facilities were so disgusting a number of very well know riders decided to improve them. They somehow got destroyed during the night !!. The temporary replacements were much better ! The racing was good, all the top teams were there, Agostini, Redman, Hailwood, Ivy and so on. The locals made us so welcome. Hell looking at this cannot believe how it's changed for the better. It was just a public roadway then mostly. Saturday was race day, Saturday night in the town was memorable. Thank you Assen for the memories.

@@steveellis5854 Sorry Steve, getting old mate, memory about worn out !. Did they have the TT and the Manx GP that year ? A month apart ? . I know we was booked for the TT but the ferries went on strike I think and we had some quick reorganising to do . Went on my genuine BSA Rocket Gold Star Clubmans and then on to the Belgian at Spa. Damned magneto packed up coming home, had to leave it as no spares available. Went back a week later and fixed it and rode it home ?. Great memories.

My 1st GP was in Assen 1979. Wil Hartog racing against Barry Sheen and King Kenny Roberts! The Dutch went crazy for Wil! A memory I will always cherish! I rode my BSA 650 Lightning there and back. The roads home were packed with people on the over passes, just watching the thousands of motorcycles leaving the track.

I could tell that was a special thing for you even though it was raining. I felt the same way riding my motorcycle on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a charity event. You are so brave to take those corners at that speed in the wet without very soft mix tyres! Your technique at the corners got better as you lapped, but mostly taking the turn too early. In using the full width of track, later into a corner can enable a faster out! Love the Dutch for Isle of Man - sounds like 'Izal of men'

I liked this video a lot. It gave rare insight into TT and GP racing in the Netherlands which has a strong tradition among other European countries. England has its Brands Hatch and other countries its famous tracks. Its a sport that unites people of various countries who share a love of motorcycle racing. We have our share of tracks on the international circuit here in the US. It's great that the Eastern European countries of the former Soviet Block now are free to be part of the world's racing circuits. The Isle of Man and its 'man', Joey Dunlop, and other great racers like Barry, make the sport as exciting as it is. It's a 'flip side' of touring.

When i was in my teenage years i went to the races many times. I lived close to the circuit and on friday night we went into town and then straight through to the races with a terrible hangover. Sleep all day in the sun and go home without seeing anything from the races itself. Aaaah memories.

Itchy: What a great idea to video laps around the Tourist Trophy Closed course right there in Assen while the WEC practices it's lock down on us. That track may not be as prestigious as Mugello, but it's pretty far up there. I'd recon it to be like Daytona International during Bike Week in the States. It's very impressive that you were "allowed" to take Ronin out there and "roll that power on." That little twin can really pack a punch if handled right and a track like that can swallow that punch right up. It's too bad it rained, but it's all good! ben/ michigan

One aspect of riding is the ability to go fast with the bike. And the only place to experience that (unless breaking the law) is on a race track. Unlucky about the rain, on the other hand doing it when it is slippery is experience well needed for coming trips. Looked like you really had fun there, and made a great video for us to watch. Thanks for that, and for this great channel.

Assen is my hometown. Not a very special town but a very special circuit and a big part of the Dutch motorcycle culture. Loved seeing it this way, awesome video 👌. Just got my license a few month back and I can't wait to start riding. You keep doing what you're doing cause this is awesome content.
