Technically, just about any boat "drifts" when turned relatively hard, being they derive their directional control from a rearward position. The less deadrise, the more profound the drift will be.

These boats are not designed to drift. You must lose control to drift in them. I ran The Sheriff Patrol Boats Full Time On the Klamath River and also the Smith River. We also assisted the Curry County and Josephine County Sheriff's on the upper and lower Rogue during these races. These guys would push the limits of their boats and some would pay for it. One of our Patrol Boats was an Old Boice Slick bottom. It would drift in every corner as it had no rakes to prevent sliding. You could easily spin 180"s and 360's at will. Once you learn how to drive them you want to drift into the corners and shoot out. That will shorten your corner turns. While training rookie Officers to drive, they would lose it in almost every corner as there is an art and lots of practice to do a controlled drift in a River Sled. The Drivers in this Video are Highly Skilled and have many many hours of practice doing this. If you ever get a chance to run a flat bottom Jet boat on a wild river, do it. You will have the time of your life. You can go on White water Jet Boat Tours on the Klamath River in Northern Ca. and also the Lower and upper Rogue River in Southern Oregon. Its a must do if you ever make it our way. Have Fun and always be safe.

I understand what you mean however, losing control to drift is an incorrect statement. They slide when you turn because they have very little degree to the hull and the dead rise is completely different than prop driven boats. Strakes, chines and hull design can drastically change how they perform. Most non-race shallow water jet hulls are designed to take very little water meaning they are very flat bottomed and will slide in corners. Dead flat boats don't corner well so most hulls have some degree to them. There are multiple hull designs out there, these race boats are of the tunnel design and actually handle very well in corners. A lot of river boats are of the Delta Pad design and some use step tech for faster boats running larger HP's. Chines and strakes are used for lift/floatation and also provide traction. Your application will have a large impact on the hull you want to run. Cheers!!!

smwizzz I ran Jet boats most all my life. The race boats are not designed to drift. They are designed to bite in the corners. Drifting costs you time and speed. Our Patrol Boats were designed to drift as they have no Strakes designed into the hulls. Our new jet boats are not designed to drift. They have strakes preventing drift unless you over steer and lose control and then you drift. They are not designed to drift although you can by over steering. I ran these boats ten hours a day 4 days a week. That was my job. I have more time behind the wheel in a jet boat then most any racer. White water jet boating was my occupation not my weekend sport. I could not even begin to guess how many hours I have running jet boats in the white water. Between all the years Guiding and then as a deputy running white water daily. It is to many hours to even try to count. I do not know you or what you do but I have seen no one jump in our old Boice jet patrol boat and not lose it in the first semi sharp corner. Either spinning out or ending up on a gravel bar. It did not matter if they had experience or not. Remove the strakes and it is a whole new animal. I trained rookies to drive on this boat just for that reason. Once you learn to drive a slick bottom you can drive any jet. This Boice was 21 ft with a ford 460 bored 60 over with a Holly 1100 double pumper. It would do 70 mph with an American turbine pump. Try controlling that in the corners with a slick bottom. Drifting was the name of the game with this boat. You had to set up early and lay it into a drift and slide the entire corner. In a race jet you cut tight on the inside and make an aggressive turn when clearing the gravel or rock point. Thus launching you around the corner and maintaining speed. The boat will bite hard and turn fast. Just do not catch an edge or the turn will be a roll out.

Doug Oxford Thats cool. If you look at my vids... lots of them. They are me and my adventures. There are HUGE amounts of time not logged on video of equally if not more extreme experiences. I have not driven 10 hrs a day 4 days a week but I have a lot of experience both inland and offshore in boats my whole life and have built my share of boats over the years. In actuality, I am in the midst of developing a commercial production boat that can be made in various lengths. I was not dissing you OR Questioning your knowledge. I did make my statement... losing control is not something that is a preferred method of driving anything. Race car drivers, drift car operators, trick bike riders and so on would argue with this statement. Race boats ARE designed to corner. They are also designed to move forward at very high speeds. In saying so, one would expect that being IN CONTROL would be important. At speeds of 70 MPH as your ride traveled, I would also believe control would be important. 70 MPH in any environment is a good speed and will quickly maim or kill you if something happens. I ride dirt bikes, 300+ hp snowmobiles, my big boat is 400 hp and my little boat is running 165 hp in a 9 ft ride. I have a side by side, a quad and a Jeep, all set up for off road. We own a lodge in northern BC, 60 miles from Alaska on the Stikine River... the "Grand Canyon" of Canada!!! My experience may or may not be up to your standards but I have to say, I am not completely incompetent. I believe you could tell me grand stories and I would love to hear the stories. I am more than familiar with your neck of the woods and plan on making a trip one of these years when I am not so busy and have the time and $$$ to check it out. Eagle Marine and Outlaw have hulls that compete in the races you have probably patrolled. My big ride is an Outlaw. It is ready willing and able to visit as soon as I am. Maybe we can trade stories when I arrive. Cheers, Happy Trails!!!

We have pics ten feet out of the water jumping waves in the surf. The flight was awesome but the landing was a tad harsh. We split the hull on the proto type and they rebuilt it and never had an issue again. Still running all Boultons to this day river and Ocean. I would like to see some of your boats.Hit me up when you head this way.

I have old footage that I just can't be bothered to mess with because of quality and having to run it through a video converter to turn into a usable form of media. Big air is AWESOME!!! There are a lot of amazing hulls out there and in your line of work I would believe that the guys who cater to what you do would be the best. @cobra96svt570 They typically race at all river depths, The shallowest these boats will run is about 6 inches of water at race speeds, The drive systems are like your automobile the run a drive line from the engine at the flywheel to the pump housing. The boat uses a jet drive system and the steer with the nozzel of the pump. Its like driving a car, Speeds so far have reached 147 powered by a t-58 turbine out of a bell helicopter. Speeds depend on which class U run.
@racing16
@racing16 14 жыл бұрын
Actually mrgdud22 and lowrider1812 Your both right. They (the river racers) use to run three people just like the offshore boys. A driver, throttle man, and a navigator. Now they just have a driver and a navigator. The boat is set-up just like a race car with a gas pedal. The navigator looks for the race line and obstacles and keeps their eyes on the guages. Most of the drivers though know the courses like the back of their hand though.
@racing16
@racing16 15 жыл бұрын
It really a little of both. At the bow it's a V back about 6 feet. As you get into the chime of the boat it begins to become flat. towards the stearn it is about 3 feet across. So basically it is a flat tappered section like a V from the bow to stern. Starts at Zero from the bow and ends up 3 feet across at the stern. Those bottoms are great for sliding your boat almost like a jet sled.
@racing16
@racing16 15 жыл бұрын
These are not outboards but propelled buy jet pumps. Yes they will jump out of the water on a very hard corner with rollers or chop. These boats will slide on the water until they reach the breaking point of the pumps suction then they spinout. They don't drift like cars rather they slide around corners. The bottoms of these boats are rater flat for like a sled. If you you what a sled is.
@racing16
@racing16 15 жыл бұрын
Your right about accidents will and do happen, That's just part of racing. The outboard part your off just a little. These are inboard V-8 motors. The saftey features on these boats are amazing. They run rollbars, 5 point harness systems halon extinguishers for fires, and numerous other saftey features. What you don't see is these guys preview these rivers a day in advance running it all day long looking for the fastest lines through the rivers. It's not as crazy as it looks.

Yeah there's alot of people that thrive on others comments. They do have a good point though. Not everyone likes music in videos. So we try an accommodate as many as possible without music. Some are just true gearheads and all the motor makes the best music. So I can see their point.

@MrRiptoe Yes the person known as the navigator looks for hazards like submerged rocks and other things that might be in the water. Their job is also to keep a close eye on all the guages like oil pressure and temp along with any warning lights along with showing the driver which is the safest shoot to take during a race. Most drivers know the courses like the back of their own hands though.

Watched this and, can't think of a single legitimate reason for it beyond human eccentricity... It's an otherwise, quiet, flowing river in a wilderness area somewhere... They're not a war machine protecting anyone from aggression and, they're not an emergency rescue unit on a mission to save lives... So, bottom line to this thing is that it's all about knuckle dragging humans getting expensive adrenaline rushes... They should not be on a river with this thing... It does not have an exposed prop, it has an impeller inside the boat. It sucks in water from the bottom of the boat and pumps it out the back. I have suck up sand, and gravel all the time, small stones about golf ball size get past my grates and ding up the impeller. I like running in the rivers also. I have beached on a gravel bar for a couple hours. Always know your water before running!! the river dropped 8" from my last trip.

Relax, 8426560. This isn't Tokyo - spend 100k on a car so it can look like shit and drive sideways, but not straight - drifting. It's boat drifting. And yes, by definition, it most certainly is. The point of this video is the extremity of the action of doing up to 100mph on water. Don't get it twisted with your video games or whatever might be your source of information.

the lack of a large rudder and skags on a jetboat allows it to slide under power, spin out. I don't call it drifting but it is the power boat equivalent to drifting NOTE: a jetboat has to be throttled up to steer, the thrust slides the back of the boat opposite of the way it is turning, Mine is an 18' 454 Chevy powered Nordic zoom zoom, ;-)

@racing16 That makes sense. I had a small (12 foot) jet boat at one time, but it wasn't a race boat. It could go in very shallow water, but there was always the drawback of sucking in sticks, rocks, small aquatic animals and anything else that could fit into the intake. How did you get into racing these? That would be a really cool livelihood.
