I understand your point about the functions on these sets. I just finished the Daytona SP3, and I've built the Lamborghini and the Bugatti. I know that they are going to be "sculptures" that will either sit on a table or hang on a wall, but it is a really cool sculpture that I spent the time to build myself. I build these sets precisely because I enjoy the complexity. I enjoy them more than the 1:10 scale cars because they are more complex. I particularly enjoyed the system-built front end and rear end on the Ferrari. Yes, the rear end was particularly challenging, but again, it's the challenge of figuring it out that I enjoy. And yes, for this price, one would expect that the instructions would have been published correctly! Thank you for all the information you offer on Lego sets!
@jdarcade25384 ай бұрын
I know a lot of people complain about the blue pins ruining the look of their sets, yet since Lego insists color coding pieces to ensure easier identification of pieces, the obvious solution would be to keep the pins blue while recoloring the caps of the pins to match the color of the exterior/interior.

Szia Balazs, in terms of look I agree with you. It's not a 1:1 replica, but it does its job. Also previous lego supercars weren't 100% accurate, but we have to remember it's a lego rendition of something, so if it is close enough some degree of freedom can be tolerated. Regarding the gearbox: I don't remember which was my opinion 2 years ago with the Ferrari, but now I kinda sit in the middle. I feel like a bigger (and more expensive) set as a supercar MUST include some functions, and a gearbox is definitely one, and if they are to include one then they better include a "complete" one (i.e. a 7/8 speed in a 7/8 speed car, not a mini one with just 2/4 different gears). But at the same time, as you said, there are other features other than gearboxes. The bruno P1 is a nice example, although not perfectly working 100% of the times, the features included justify the missing gearbox. The problem is that this kind of cars don't feature that many distinctive features that can be translated in lego form. One of the best supercars for me is the CaDa Mercedes AMG One, where the only real feature is the motorization. But they were smart enough to include it in a way that they not only provided a feature, but they did it in a way that they replicated the hybrid nature of the real car, with electric motors replicating the ones of the real AMG One, and a pullback motor replicating the KERS/ERS. And they are useless, because ultimately the set will sit on a shelf, but you still got the experience of building it and have a set that is 99% accurate with the real car, also providing something different from a gearbox. I'm fine with this McLaren, because it includes a new kind of gearbox compared to the last 3 supercars, I can justify LEGO including it since they upgraded their portfolio. But if we are to see in the future a next supercar with the same kind of gearbox, then I'll not be pleased. Maybe having electric supercars in the future will also make so that lego will be forced to include something different in terms of functions, getting rid of complex (useless) gearboxes, and including something else
@extranceIT4 ай бұрын
All that said, I'd still be interested in a gearbox in a car that truly justified it. I would love to see a lego 1:8 scale F1 car with functions like working DRS (that could be truly actuated, not posed like in the McLaren and in the Mercedes) as well as maybe a gearbox, since it would be a design nightmare to include both a gearbox as well as a paddle shifting mechanism in such a slim silhouette.

The gearbox in such big scale model is useless until you try to motorize it somehow. I wish Lego would just implement control+/poweredup style miniaturized metal-gers-inside gearbox that would make it so they don't take up so much space in those sets which would mean more place for making the model more like the original car on the inside, as well as motorizing those sets would make more sense with a gearbox, because there are so many moving parts in there that the friction has to affect the performance.

Completely agree about the gearbox and great to see it streamlined from enormous block of back to back gears in the Land Rover which made is a nightmare to build offering not much else to the overall functionality of the vehicle. Really looking forward to review/comparisons for this one.

Thank you for the review ! This McLaren has many good things. Each cars has it's step up. The Porsche was the first but with complexe gearbox shifting and holes in the body. They fixed it with the Bugatti but it became too heavy for suspension and the gearbox had some issues. They fixed it with the Lamborghini with frame and complexe system for suspension but the issue was it's not a well known car and the suspension doesn't have so much effect. They fixed it with the Ferrari with big new spring but the gear box was now old and it's still not a well known car. Lego finally fix it with great new parts for the gearbox and a famous car. So to resume this P1 has the glory of 1/8 scale, the best gearbox ever, best suspension ever. For the body, only the Porsche and the Bugatti has a charm (and 4 wheels drive). So personally I would build the Bugatti with the new gearbox and the new suspensions to get the best of everything ! (The Ferrari is the worst because it's juste the Lambo with new suspension).

@Thinginator4 ай бұрын
Because Technic ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE FOR DISPLAY MODELS! That may be what it's become, but the entire point of the Technic system from the get-go was to build functional models that recreate the mechanisms inside various machines, and educate the builder on how things work. The gearbox is there because there needs to be SOMETHING technically impressive to justify making an enormous Technic car, otherwise it doesn't belong in the Technic line anymore and would be better off as a system set.
