Yeah that goes for almost anywhere in the world bub. If you take the time to learn the culture and language before visiting you'll be much more accepted by the locals than if you just show up as an English only Westerner. It's called assimilation, people are more open to those who share things they themselves have such as language/culture. Here in America assimilation is oddly frowned upon but that disdain is often from people who have never visited other parts of the world and are therefore more ignorant.

It’s so refreshing that she acknowledged colorism, because it really does go beyond black-on-black prejudice. Other races will absolutely treat us differently depending on the “type” of black person they think we are, and that even extends beyond colorism to things like how you speak, how you choose to wear/style your hair, etc. Racism is such a multifaceted experience, and just because you are members of the same group doesn't mean you’ll experience it the same way.

how you speak, how you choose to wear/style your hair matters. However, degree of darkness does not. The players of Cuba women's volleyball teams of 1980s and 1990s are well received and respected in China. They are very black and were actually the adversary of the the Chinese team.

I lived in a rural village in China that had never or rarely seen a black man. Truth is, most had never seen a black man and many didn't know of Africa or Nigeria. The locals where super fascinated by me and i couldn't even speak the language. Every night the head of the community and a few older men would bring local made spirit to me with a pack of cigarettes (they always offered me cigarettes everywhere i went, they called it hospitality. Reminds me of how we offer visitors kolanut in my village in Nigeria). So most nights i would sit with these men and drink until after mid night. The grannies always gave me fruit from their garden when i walked by. I don't know if it was because i was taller than everyone in the village or if it was the long dreadlocks. The younger ones would show me pictures of bob Marley on their phones and shout "one love". Haha. Such a simple life that was.

I spent 3 weeks in China during the summer. I am much darker than she is in the winter time and when I visited I had a very clear tan. I was constantly regarded with disgust. Many thought I was dirty, the tan lines and my palms being my "clean" skin. One of my host mothers consistently checked the bath water in the outdoor barrell after I finished my shower to the point where I am now convinced that she was trying to shame me into washing better. Another host family rubbed the back of my hands before dinner because they thought it was dirt and, later, paint/makeup. No one wanted to sit next to me. I was never barred from anywhere or denied service but I swear I can still feel their stares. I was made fun of for the shape of my nose, the fullness of my lips, and the size and shape of my butt.

We’re both foreigners but there was a decidedly different way were both treated. L I was kinda treated like a dog - everyone wants to talk to you particularly if they know English, offered help and treats quite often, also treated like I’m dumb quite a bit. He was treated kinda like a rat - ie very few people were treating him how they treated me, most were just tolerating him and keeping an eye on him to make sure he didn’t ruin anything with his existence. It hit him pretty hard some days, because he taught football to some local kids and sometimes they treated him really badly.

I’m sorry but grown ass adults shouldn’t be asking another adult about the concept of melanin… not with the internet at our finger tips… even you are giving them a pass on not being able to think a dark skin person could exist like they never seen a tv show, news broadcast, or could look up people with brown skin. Also if they know who Obama or Beyoncé is then they should have been able to ask the internet why is Beyoncé brown… makes more sense to me. I’ve never asked an adult why they were white or black because it’s one not important and two common sense.

When we met she was quiet but nice to me. Long story short and through many mental health issues that I was the main support for I think she did come around to me in the end and she continued to call me yearrrss after I broke up with her son to talk about her life, personal struggles, family issues, and to ask me to get back with her son. I think she came around but I always think about how strongly he said she was a racist and would be nice to me to my face but deep down would never like me. I think she truly liked me though which makes me think maybe it is more ignorance than straight up hatred like in the us. It’s still a very fine line between the two though imo

I think racism is a broad umbrella term to mean "judge someone based on their race". Someone may be racist but not necessarily hate the group of people because it depends on the "judgement" formed. If it's like "this colour = smart/rich" then people generally don't mind too much since the implications are not too bad. If it's like "this colour = physically dirty" (like in this video), then it will be annoying since they come and "clean" others. If it's "this group = dangerous/enemy/robbers/etc." then it's worst since the implications is removal (or at least desire to remove). Also, how strong the judgment is also important. Sometimes it's just a guess based on popular media but can be changed with direct interactions. Sometimes it's dead fixed no matter what they see with their own eyes. So in the case of the old lady, the son may be true in the sense that she has some perceptions about you based on your skin tone. However, the perceptions are probably not that harmful or not very fixed.

I dunno, racist people can like people of groups they hate, it's not always as simple as their hatred being equal for every person. My school friend was dating a guy who supported the KKK and her and her family were ok with it. Her family were racist and didn't like 'mixed breed people' aka, people like me. But when I was at their house they were really nice to me. They thought I was polite and a good influence on her. The only sign of awkwardness was her big brother who would just stare at me. I only found out they were racist and supportive of her KKK bf after staying over their house overnight multiple times. And she never understood why it broke my heart because 'they like you, they're nice to your face!' Taught me a strong lesson that these people will sit and have a cup of tea with you and laugh at your jokes. Maybe even genuinely enjoy your time, but would still watch you get murdered, if it came to it.

Same in India, where fair skinned Indians look down on dark skinned Indians. East Asia, South Asia, Middle East….most of these places are incredibly xenophobic and racist. Pretty sure she's getting paid or something to say this stuff. A lot of Chinese are extremely rude to anyone that's not Chinese, and the Chinese people are pretty racist if we're being honest.

"Chinese is the hardest language to learn according to normies who have never tried to learn it. In reality, Chinese is really easy. It has literally no complex morphology: no tense, plurals, gender. It doesn't have irregular verbs or nouns because it has no verb and noun endings whatsoever. It's almost difficult to explain how easy Chinese is." - Luke Smith

@@sirllamaiii9708 all of that simplicity actually makes it hard. You can't even tell if a word is a verb, noun or anything else, except if you not only recognize the verb and recognized all preceding words in a sentence. The isolating structure combined with lack of redundancy makes listening comprehension tough as nails. And especially for specialized vocabulary, you have to learn at least one new character for every term you need...

I have a black friend who was very dark. He moved to Cambodia as a missionary and learned their language. He said the racism there was worse than in the states because of a superstition there that evil spirits are dark. I don’t know if this is true but that’s what he says was his experience. I wonder if anyone else had a similar experience. I never been to Cambodia but I have been to Vietnam. I know I saw many Vietnamese be prejudice to the Cambodians. 😢

That's literally what she said. Asian racism is mostly because of ignorance. In the US is purely based on hatred for anyone that's not white. That's why the US racism is technically worse

This isn’t true at all. My dad is khmer and his whole family is just called ah kmao cuz they were farmers and there skin is darker. Theres a lot of Cambodians with really dark skin. They probably didn’t like him because he was coming in a bhudist area trying to convert people to Christianity.

I’ve never been to China before, but as an African American I totally get what she’s saying. I’ve experienced my fair share of racism, and it really is scary to know that there are people out there that hate you to the point that they want you harmed/killed, just because of your looks. I’d much rather prefer the ignorance she describes.

It's quite rare to experience hate in China (in my experience anyway)--I can only recall two overt experiences over the past 20 years). I just got back from a 2 mouth trip. The only 2 things that irritated (aside from the air pollution and cigarette smoke), was people saying that I couldn't be from America because of my skin color (some people didn't even know what the letters USA stood for!) and or trying to school me in regards to something concerning Chinese culture in a way I found condescending. Other than that, people generally rolled out the red carpet. I was taken out to dinner, given free stuff, one guy even paid for my hotel room after I missed train chatting with him. At a wine ship, the lady always insisted on giving me a higher quality wine for the price of the cheaper one. I could go on and on. I was walking down a dark street in the the middle of the night and the police didn't even bat an eye. They normally just wave. That's kind of unreal for black Americans. Same in Taiwan. I even told some cops to keep the nice down when they were chatting on the metro. They were like, "Sure!" Felt like a video game character unlocking new powers. 😄

I’m Korean who live in the US, and based on my experience living in the two opposite sides of the world, I can kinda relate to what she said. This can apply to Korea and Japan as well. East Asian countries are still homogenous with more than 90% of the people there being ethnically the same. The concept of racism is relatively new in these countries, and there are tons of other (older) problems in the society that date back to ancient times before they knew that different races even existed. They have heard that there was racial slavery in the West, but it’s not something they had a first-hand experience with. Hence the less hate. Also the culture is very different. In East Asia they generally care more about how other people perceive them or what affects their reputation in the community. These are hyper-surveillance societies, both literally and metaphorically, and therefore there is less public violence/hate. China especially is under the strict control of the socialist regime, which deters people from acting without thinking about the consequences. The fact that she can speak the language could also help though… Plus she is very pretty. China and Korea are both kinda lookist countries.

But they'll soon realize you don't speak Korean natively, and if they can speak in English! it'll be okay😊 I'm Korean and although I've seen my foreign friends go through interesting situations, in most situations it wasn't from a place of hate

Their wasnt racial slavery in usa, it just happened to be majority black slaves because blacks in africa were full of slavers, who sold other blacks for cheap to europeans. Their were a few non black slaves, and if you count indentured servitude their was tons of whites. Their were also around 10% of blacks who were free when the civil war occurred with them being in both north and south. Their was also black slave owners in usa, it wasnt impossible to be a free black with slaves in south it was just rare.

Please watch the video from JustNolu. She’s an African KZbinr and she was a kindergarten teacher in China. Her boss in China punched her, shoved her, and chased her. Of course, not all Chinese people are like her manager and there are some non-Black foreigners who are also mistreated in China. But Nolu’s mistreatment seems to be most prevalent among darker skinned more ethnic-looking Blacks. Nolu’s horrific experience doesn’t sound much better than racism suffered by Blacks in America. Worse is that the school she worked for covered it up.

I just saw a video of a white male Chinese youtuber brought his black female "friend " and his father (again all on video) treated that girl like 💩. Then the poor girl is taken to the airport due to the bad experience. Girl says "please hug me" and he (youtuber) kept saying "bye, go". Again....all on video. She's lucky the girl interviewed hasn't had a bad experience. The fact she can understand and speak the language IS HER ADVANTAGE. If she didn't, she would have been treated like dirt. She will change her tune once she has a very negative and traumatic experience.
