What's too bad here is that they couldn't decide whether they wanted to do a story about antique mechanical banks or a story about racism. They ended up making it look like the bank collecting thing is all about bigotry. If you look close at the part about the collector of Black Americana you will see that those attitudes permeated almost everything in the past. Whatever you collect will evidence it; books, entertainment, toys, advertisements ... collecting does not equal racism, however.

"Acknowledging that it happened and condoning are two different things" Probably the thing most people MISS right there. And who wouldn't be proud of their collection? People often look for things and reasons to hate it seems. If you were a collector of coins, wouldn't you proudly display it for the world to see? Even sell them? Would that make you a capitalist or lover-of-money? No. Just an enthusiast of said genre and history.

You are also making a somewhat dishonest mistake here. You paint the people who don’t like these racist toys as those who are necessarily looking for “things and reasons to hate”. I may not disagree with them IF they demanded these auctions stop. But it is very understandable why any normal would be upset. I would say SHOULD be upset. Not necessarily at the auction or collectors but because collectors in a way made these toys appear as something cool, vintage, or vintage as opposed to things which probably should first be viewed as a moral offense toward any American.

It's important to recognize the difference between memorializing and glorifying horrors of the past, which I believe is morally wrong, and between saving these pieces for educational and historical purposes, which is what I think is morally right.

It is also worth noting that: 1. Those 2 banks that sold for a high price did so because they are rare and in good condition, not because of racial content. Banks that have nothing of that tone sell for huge prices all the time because collectors are fascinated with the whole genre. 2. Many of the makers of the worst examples of these banks were not American. Many were made in England and other countries. Racism was not invented here nor exclusive to the U.S., it has been addressed here though.

These collectors think they’re “serious” but in principle they’re not more different than kids who collect Pokémon.

... and professional athletes are nothing more than kids throwing a baseball around in the backyard. So what's your point? Are you saying collector's shouldn't be serious about that which they find interesting? What do you do in your spare time, fish?, bowl?, watch sports? .... how childish you are.

The film Bamboozled featured a lot of items like this. Its such a good movie. I do see items like this as tactile proof of the poison that still has not left america's system.

2:35 I came here because of watching The Jim Jefferies Show on Comedy Central (2019-04-23, Season 3 Episode 6). I had never heard of the Jolly N-word Bank. I assume that in Australia, New Zealand and Europe they went by that particular racist moniker and in America they were called the Greedy N-word Boy.

I'm from New Zealand and remember as a kid back in the 60's a friend had one if the Jolly N bank's, at the time we never associated the thing in any way with race. As kids we accepted friendships from anyone regardless is skin tone,.

These toys are not racist at all. They are just simple toys that are funny and entertaining.

i laugh at the news people who had to warn people of seeing the banks. I am disappointed in people if they think it is offensive

Maybe it is because you’re simply an ignorant idiot?
@noahpehowic60802 жыл бұрын
How is it not offensive? The portrayal of people at this time is horrific and implies that a group of people are naturally inferior to another, which we know is wrong. There is, however, a difference between a historical piece that is saved to educate about the horrors of the past and a memorialization and glorification of those horrors, and I think that the latter is wrong to do. They should be preserved, but for educational and historical purposes, not for glorification or memorialization purposes.

@@noahpehowic6080 maybe if you’re softer than baby poop you need to be warned about about a piggy bank. Go get yourself a Victorian fainting couch

This video was recommended to me after watching a few restoration videos of these banks. I went on eBay to check what they were selling for. And thats when I saw these, and was offended. I understand the historical importance and cool mechanical ingenuity of mechanical banks. But not when people are portrayed like clowns. Its shameful that some people feel this is okay

Who really cares? I use words that anger stupid people. I'm glad so many people give my words so much power. If people stop being offended by silly words then they will take away power from words.
