Thanks! I just found my grandmother’s sharpener, and I had never seen a sharpener like this before. She passed away back in 2017, and my kids and I now live in her house. I needed to cut a tomato my dad gave me from his garden, and the knife I always use needed to be sharpened. I was going to go over to my parent’s house to see if I could sharpen my knife on my mom’s sharpener that I know how to use, but decided to look up a video on how to use this Rada sharpener. I use the same thing. I live near a bunch of Amish and these are the knives they use. Rada are the best knives I’ve ever owned. As a side note, I always rinse my knives after I sharpen them as they get little bits of the steel metal on them. Oh and the sharpeners last a very long time. I’ve owned mine for 9 years and it’s still as good as new.

My mom had one Rada knife when I was growing up and when I saw them in an Amish store @10 years ago I bought one like hers purely out of nostalgia. I have since replaced all of my knives with Rada, and love the sharpener! Have told all of my friends about them too!

I got one of these last year, liked it so much I got a bunch of them for the kids. They all raved at how they loved it and I love it, too. I am left handed so I have to hold it down more carefully, but eh, I'm used to having to adapt😁. But if the sharpening wheels could be a bit closer to the middle?

I have all the Rada knives as well as the sharpener. But is there a way to sharpen the strayed tomato knife? Or do we need to just replace it when dull?

I don't think that can be sharpened. I would just replace it. I have had my tomato knife 5 years, its still sharp so I think if only have to replace them every 10 years or so, we are doing good. Best 8.70 I ever spent! 😀

I had to look the tomato knife up because I'm not very familiar with Rada's kitchen knives. As near as I can tell, it is a serrated knife which means it can be sharpened like any other serrated knife. In my limited experience sharpening serrated knives, it is a bit more time consuming/harder than sharpening a regular knife, but still doable. As far as the how to actually sharpen it, I'd simply search on KZbin for "sharpening serrated knives" or "sharpening serrated kitchen knives". As for sharpeners that will work with serrated knives, off the top of my head, it should be possible to do with any number of sharpeners including the Sharpens Best/Speedy Sharp/Corona AC8300 carbide files, ceramic rods, diamond rods, etc... The catch is that you probably won't be able to do it with a pull through sharpener like the Rada because you need something that will get into the scallops in the serrations.

@@Jeni_Gough I don't see why you couldn't sharpen it. It is just a serrated knife. In my experience, they're harder/more time consuming to do than a smooth edge knife, and you might not be able to use a pull through sharpener like the Rada sharpener. But assuming the carbide file, ceramic/diamond rod, etc... you're using can get into the scallops/serrations, there is no reason you couldn't sharpen one.
