SUGGESTION: Next time you get into a large convoy, and all the deck crew are calling out: "Schiff gesiten" (?), i.e. 'ship sighted', you can go down to the control room at some point, and pull up the map which SH3 has (I've seen it in other play throughs), which, for surface action, shows all the sighted ships as round dots, with the U-55 in the middle. My thinking is that your weapon's officer would be plotting all of these sightings, and putting down the bearings and rough distances called down from the bridge. It would have been real and it would exist. You can then take a look and talk (to us) about: how many columns, approximate distances (guess), how many targets, where are the escorts, etc. I think this would be very helpful to put us into-the-picture as is were. HOWEVER, after getting everyone oriented, you do NOT use the map as most players do to get exact distances, speed, etc. Instead you go back up on the bridge, and continue as a real ship commander would have done. Great series. (We'll forgive the AOB port/starboard kerfuffle, you must have gotten into the schnapps hidden under your bunk!)

Your GWX OneAlex series got me back into SH3 after 20 years, so thankyou. On my current patrol (March 1941) I've noticed the occasional merchant seems to carry a radar array at their masthead.

That "no way a simple tanker" was in fact a fleet oiler. Check wikipedia (en) for "T3 tanker" and/or "USS Cimarron (AO-22)".

@@thisherehandleIdospout The antenna looks like a SC radar set to me. Those where introduced in 1942, and yes, fleet oilers where equipped with them, but I guess they wheren't top priority ... . Might be they even received sets that came back from combat ships that where upgraded with SG sets, MAYBE? I would give the mods designers some leeway here - putting every historical configuration of ships in a s a seperate model would surely be too much, don't you think? Might be that the radar is actually not active in 1941, I have no idea if the game works that way.

@@memyshelfandeye318 Yeah, limitations with the mod are the obvious, most logical 'OOC' (out-of-character) reasons, I'd agree. And I'm *definitely* inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, regardless, given what they've created - Full stop. ...Still, *if* I were to be persnickety... It would've been nice if they had realized that those particular tankers never even sailed under a British flag, though - Just found that out after about... 15 minutes of digging, tbf. They should really be treated as warships in the US Navy, IMO - I mean, they have multiple deck guns and names starting with 'USS' and everything =p

@Tonci87 So, if that is indeed a Cimarron-class fleet oil tanker (and the stats do seem to square with those of the Type T3-S2-A1, from what I've read)... Yeah, that's weird 🤨 Not just the fact that it has radar, but the fact that it's British-flagged: At this point in the war in particular, all of these that are actually sailing around should already be commissioned into the US Navy, complete with a 'USS' designation and everything. Some were directly commissioned into the Navy, while others spent a short amount of time in regular shipping duty before being acquired by the US Navy and commissioned into the Navy like the others. My point is... How did the Brits manage to convince the US Navy to let them buy one of its fast, fancy new oilers that they had asked private shipbuilders to build ESPECIALLY FOR THEM AND TO THEIR SPECIFICATIONS in case the US Navy needed them?? The US Navy obviously intended to press all of them into service in case of war, so the idea that the Brits managed to convince us Yanks to give up one of the... five, by my estimation, that had been completed and were not being turned into escort carriers at this point is... impressive, to say the least 😅 However, IF they managed that... than sure, why not strap a radar to such an important ship (one that was, perhaps, making it's first trip back to its new home, even 🥲) In this case, I'd wager it's the 'USS Sabine', or perhaps more appropriately the 'SS Esso Albany', since that ship (as evidenced by the name) actually spent a little time outside of the US Navy's hands before finally being acquired by them. I mean, who knows... maybe it's as simple as the Brits pulling a fast one and buying it before the Navy could - Who's to say? It's all just make-believe anyway - I'm just trying to make as much sense of it as possible 🙃😂

If you get a chance, Toncs, check out my comment about the Polish destroyer when you have time - It's rare that you can narrow down the number of possibilities so much on a destroyer (well, at least without a pennant number 😉) but, as you said, Poland didn't have many, and those three funnels really narrowed down the options even further ;)

Didn't you set AOB wrong? It should be the angle on bow, from the point of view of the enemy, towards your U-boat. The dial should be at 90 degrees but on the red side of the dial, not on the green side. PS: Should have waited a bit longer before commenting. :)

Another fantastic episode aboard U-55. Thank you once more for your excellent and helpful commentary. I was able to experience the picture you painted in my head and enjoy it all :) BTW, I was wondering if a convoy would be capable of travelling so slowly due to having to make enough speed to be able to steer. Making steerage way, I believe it was called. It seems to me a ship running at less than 3 knots might not be able to steer effectively.

May be a ship was damaged and that is why they are so slow. They either go slow or the lone ship peels off.

Yeah, that is a real thing. A ship needs to sail fast enough to ensure that the rudder has enough water flowing past it. Otherwise the rudder becomes ineffective

Apologies for watching this a bit late But I noticed something at the beginning that bears mentioning I couldn't help but notice in the upper left-hand corner was Orion the hunter watching your U-Boat glide through the night. Either this was a stroke of genius on your part (which I truly believe) or a sign of your U-Boats true nature (The Hunter and the night). Either way it was brilliant to watch.

Mine comrade, whether the vessel is IJN, RN, USN, or anyone else's navy, the cruisers however cool a concept the cruiser theory was, it was still a bad idea all the way around proven to us by history. Sad thing to me is the idea the Skipper rarely had time to yell abandon ship because the ship was destroyed so fast and sent to the bottom of the Sea 🌊. IJN Cruisers of WW 2 probably made for the best fireworks display for US and RN Skipper's and Crews. If Admiral Doenits were still with us I believe an iron cross would be in order for you and your entire boat and crew. Onwards Comrade, Keep pounding through the waves...😊😊😊

The game will allow you to bring down the bow and stern external reserves simultaneously. Don't know if they did that IRL...

No, the game doesn’t allow that. So far the reserves have always been brought in one after the other. Or Maybe I just didn’t assign enough crew to the one that I wanted to bring in second

17m into the video: your AOB is wrong, but I suppose you will fix it before shooting. I believe you are too slow, take too much risk inside the convoy and you shoot from way too close to be safe. Also... you are always guessing and guessing that's why you miss and you don't use stadiametric rangefinder. What's wrong with you, you have proven 100 times over you are totally perfect at doing calculations so why do you guess in the moment of truth rather than calculating? Here at 17m you GUESSED the speed of the convoy. Why didn't you time it? now now let me see what happens next! ahhhaahhaha

He plays with historical realism and the real uboat crews didnt have a recognition manual for all allied merchants like in the game that' why he uses visual estimates and he's pretty good at that i must say.
