The "big boys" were Armstrong Whithworth Whitley, bombers. Although the Avro Manchester does look similar in some ways, it wasn't successful but later inspired the Avro Lancaster.

Those aircraft from the first and third attacks were Fairey Fulmars. A naval version, in effect, of the Fairey Battle light bomber. Intended only as a stop-gap aircraft, the Fulmar gave sterling service throughout the early and mid war periods and was still in use in late war. They had Merlin engines and in a panic moment could be mistaken for Hurricanes, though the Fulmar was larger than the Hurricane and had a crew of 2 or sometimes 3. The twin engined bombers from the second attack were definitely Armstrong-Whitworth Whitleys.

Hey Toncs, just a little advice I thought might help: Why not order flank speed the moment the watch crew calls out that they've spotted aircraft? That way, if you need to order a crash dive (which, honestly, seems likely these days 🙃) you could already be going a knot or two faster than you would be otherwise, which would help you get the boat under just that *little* bit faster. Never know when that 'little bit' could make the difference, though 😉

Dude, if the skipper to the U-505 can go two / three years with one success at sea and only be replaced in 1944 after he shot himself in his command room then I think your fine

Really appreciating the narrative intros. The idea of getting replaced is interesting. You don't usually think about such things during a wargame, but in real life the prospect of getting replaced by someone mire favoured by the government is always there in war.

One thing I learned when I played this game 15 years ago is to NEVER turn the boat when crash driving: rudder midships. Always! the boat will sink faster; once the boat is beneath the waves around 8 knots turn left or right. (Same thing when surfacing the boat: rudder amidships).

I hope Tonci reads this. It doesn't matter how you change your course if you end up slowing down enough to stay in the same spot that airplanes last saw you. And when you turn, don't do full rudder turns, 10 degrees rudder to port/starboard are enough to shift your course without slowing down to a crawl.

Very explosive episode indeed! So many aircraft - yikes! Good that you managed another target before returning, BDU will surely weigh that against your port vs starboard targeting episode ; )

You did one very important mistake while crash diving, if you want to survive the war it has to be a reflex to put engines for propulsion only while recharging batteries and needing to crash dive, it will save your life as the war goes on. Great video ones again! 👌👌

Good advice! I didn't really think about it. But the main thing that will bite Tonci in the a** is that he looks at the sky to confirm his crew's airplane sighting, and he takes his sweet time doing so. He spent so much time with his crew, but he still doesn't trust their aircraft spotting skills, especially that his chief of the watch confirms his watchcrew's sighting.
@thisherehandleIdospout
@thisherehandleIdospout 4 ай бұрын
@@RM97800 Also, I was recommending that the second he gets their report, he should order flank speed, THEN verify the sighting if he wants. That extra knot or two he could gain in the interim could make the difference in getting under in time to dodge their bombs or depth charges... or not 😕

27:14 I haven't worked this out or looked into it, but I suspect that what this method does is, as far as the TDC can see, it replaces the actual ship with a ghost ship that's on a mirrored course to yours. It's kinda like making the TDC look in a mirror and target the reflection of your submarine, and the actual ship is behind the mirror. And it's all set up in such a way that the torpedo hits the mirror just as the real ship gets there too.

I wonder if the damage to the deck gun had to do with the crew bugging out. If they ever make another game like this I think it would be cool if merchant ships would break out old Lewis guns or Lee enfoelds and take pot shots. Not sure to what degree that happened historically, but it would make a neat scene.

THREE things -- FIRST: when you man the 88mm deck gun, your bridge crew seems to all go down to the deck gun (feature of the game!). If worried about aircraft, I believe you can go to your crew management panel, and select some other men and put them up on the conning tower bridge to watch for aircraft. You will see them on the bridge with binoculars after you put them up there using the crew management panel. SECOND: What are you doing with your depth settings on your torpedoes? Naval instructions are clear. Determine the desired depth, then reduce the setting by 3m! If you wanted 4.5m torpedo run, then subtract 3m and you should set at 1.5m. However the Navy has a minimum, which is 2m in fair weather and 3m in rough seas. So if there ever was a time to set your torpedo to 2m, it was on the last shot! Especially as it was a steam torpedo, which seem to be less reliable than the electric ones. Set for 2m, if it ran deep, down to 5m it still would have hit the target! If set for 2m and it still ran under the ship, then it truly was a faulty torpedo. Right now, you don't know if it was within the 3m margin of error that the Navy acknowledges, or if it was faulty and ran super deep. Of course you still got it with the 88mm, so all is forgiven! Good news, is that the German Navy did not have flogging as a punishment for U-boot captains in WWII! THREE: You're on your way home, so if you were to pick up a survivor or two, you can drop them off at the pier in a couple of days. (If you are allowed to do that?) In some sub games you can look at the survivors and pick up the ship's captain and engineer.
@Tonci87

Regarding the torpedoes: I have to play within the “rules” set by the game and the torpedo failure mod. Basically there’s is a minimum depth corresponding to the wind speed. You have to set the torpedo below that minimum depth, or the torpedo will be a guaranteed failure. Sadly I can’t pick up survivors. The game never envisioned it. I think even the survivors and lifeboats that we see, are there due to a mod

Hello! The method whose name is untypeable works because there is the "Intercept theorem" in mathematics. It nearly describes it. I think you was to close to the target, may closer than 300 meters. The angle was worst than not ideal, too. I would have been surprised if it explodes with impact pistols. Sorry, but I think you made a mistake again with the AOB, but i am not sure. When you turned towards the target, after you stop the turn, you should set the AOB back to 41 degree port. Becouse the method works only than. It is little difficult to understand. But in this case I think it does not mather much.

Yupp, AOB on the TDC was off after changing course. That's just a natural thing as it follows the periscopes bearing. Should've disable following and hook it back on after finishing the turn. But at this close distance it really doesn't matter that much. ;)
@bigdbat
@bigdbat 4 ай бұрын
@@AndiKoehn Yes, this is another solution to "set" it to 41 degree. Turn off TDC before turn and turn on after turn, and it keeps the 41 degree. I agree, at a close distance it doesn't matter much.
