This spring, we'll be introducing our cats (18 and 2 yrs old) to RV'ing with short trips around our neighborhood in the car with their new carriers. Once we move our camper to a new storage place a mile from our house (it's 30 mins away right now), we're planning to take them to the camper a few times before we actually take any trips. Your tote litter box is brilliant! I was planning on using a disposable box in truck, but didn't have a way to cover or close it when I take it out. Thanks for the great tips!!
@MobileRVTechServices3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good way to introduce them to the car and camping. Just know, unless your cat was born wanting to ride, they will cry and make lots of noise about it. It seems like they will never like it but usually, eventually, everything is fine. My biggest scaredy cat is doing amazing in the truck. I could barely get him in the RV at first without him freaking out and having a total crying melt down. He hasn’t even meowed them last 3 trips and just lays down and gets his sleep on.

Good ideas, but have you considered what would occur if you were involved in an accident? I travel with my pets a ton as my dog participates in dog sports and everyone travels in crash tested kennels that are secured to the vehicle seats. Sleepypod is a good crash tested brand for cats and Ruffland and Gunner make kennels that will save lives in a crash. Even if none of your cats are hurt, what happens if a rescuer opens a door? Your cats would run out next to a highway!

that’s what I was thinking! It’s extremely unsafe to just let your pets roam free in the car unless they’re trained specifically for cars. I know mine isn’t and if she’s roaming around in the car she’s jumping everywhere, climbing under the pedals, laying on the dashboard. So I have to keep her in a little crate with a harness on to keep her from screaming and throwing up haha.

The Journey Awaits we tried other litter boxes and it was a mess. This size plastic tote is perfect. The lid is dual purpose as a launching pad for the cats to jump and then to keep the litter and smell in the box while driving. My two orange cats like to sit where the box is. When it was a normal open litter box, they would sit in the litter box and make a mess when they got up.

Hey there! How do you set boundaries with the driver's seat? My cat always wants to be held when I'm driving but it makes me nervous and I don't want to be distracted. Any recommendations?
@MobileRVTechServices3 жыл бұрын
We set boundaries and Squeak (black and white cat) sets his own boundaries. Squeak sits on the center console faces the back seat and hisses at Dasey and Diesel if they attempt to go to the front seat. He actually helps out by doing this when we are traveling past 7pm (ish) when all the cats are waking up and getting antsy starting to move around. If the cats will not listen or keep trying to go places they shouldn’t, we put them back in their cages for a time out. That usually corrects their behavior and when we open the cage door, they usually just stay in the cage and sleep. FYI - in some states it’s illegal for a pet to ride on the drivers lap.
@geminidream43473 жыл бұрын
I have a tip for you. LOL For the carriers in the back seat, I use the seat belt through the handle on the top of the cage. This way if you have to stop fast, they carrier won't get thrown off the seat. I had to learn the hard way, they both were fine as we were on our way to the vets, just gave me the evil cateye for hours after the incident. LOL Hers was like Medusa's so it really creeped you out whenever you were her target! LOL How long a drive did you take for your first trip? This will be our first trip and it could be as long as 9hrs. So I don't have to panic and find a vet along the way if they don't eat or drink or use their catbox? To be honest, I am terrified but after the last catsitter I got from a reputable cat service and noticed what she done in my home while I was away and how upset my furbaby was, NEVER AGAIN!!! If he can't go, neither will I.
@MobileRVTechServices3 жыл бұрын
That is a good tip on the seat belts. We do that sometimes and other times forget. It’s much easier to buckle the cages in when the backseat isn’t full. Our first tip was about 8-10 hours, 2 days in a row. If you have to opportunity to take them for shorter rides before the real trip, it will help them get familiar with what is about to happen. 1 1/2 years later, my cats now know what “truck ride” means and that they are going to be in the truck for a few days. They might not be happy about it, but they are familiar with what is about to happen.

@@MobileRVTechServices Thank you for getting back to me with this information, it has taken some of my anxiety away. I went looking for that harness, but they don't sell it anymore. Got any other brands that I could look at? I plan on letting him out of his carrier once I see he's settled but I am travelling with people that are not used to travelling with pets this long and I am afraid they will open a door before I could get him back into his carrier. If harnessed and leashed, he will be safe if he decides to bolt and this will also give me peace of mind. He is my baby and if I had to leave him in some unknown place, I don't think I could keep my sanity.
@MobileRVTechServices3 жыл бұрын
@@geminidream4347 I totally understand your anxiety. Just click the harness link and look for other related products that are in stock. You want to make sure the hook on the harness that attaches to the leash, is not all the way up on the back of their neck. The hook needs to be towards the upper-middle of their back. This way when you tug on the leash a little, it doesn’t strain their neck. The only real reason I went with the harnesses I did, is because they offered enough colors so each cat can have a different one fitted to them. Plus, they have reflective strips in them if they were wearing it at night. When we stop during travel, only one of us gets out at a time and we immediately lock the door. When the person wants to get back in the truck, the person inside the truck will give a thumbs up or thumbs down if a cat can get out. And the person who gets in the vehicle, gets in very quickly and shuts the door. Now if the cats are going crazy and running around the truck (like after 7pm when they are up for the night), will put them in their carriers before we even attempt to get out of the truck. During the day, they’re pretty tired and don’t attempt to move. Well, 3 cats don’t move, Squeak (black & white cat) is always up and trying to get out. We are always holding him back while the outside person gets inside the truck.

@@MobileRVTechServices Thank you again for advice and understanding. No one else seems to in the family, they just think I am being silly. Black & white cats all seem to have a tornado gene in them. He would hold this position for a bit, then take off down the hall only to return at the same speed to hit the curtains this time and crawl to the top to walk along curtain holder. I would keep the cats in a cage the entire time if they aren’t used to traveling. I don’t know how bumpy a U-Haul is but I would plan on the cats getting sick from possible bumps and being scared. @@MobileRVTechServices I traveled with my two cats last year from Kentucky to Virginia and I did have to slam on my brakes and I do thank God they were in their carriers which were secured by a seatbelt because I don’t know what would’ve happened to them if not. I also traveled from Kentucky to Florida with my blind 19-year-old cat now deceased but it was so hot and my air conditioner just couldn’t keep up and she was panting and I kept having to get off on every other exit to give her water with the syringe and plus she was in kidney failure. I kept trying to make her use the litter box, but she just wasn’t going to use it with all the noise from the people in the cars and everything. It was just a nightmare. I don’t think I could let my cats out because I tried letting one of my cats out and it got under my feet while I was driving and that was dangerous for me and they just wanna go under the seats and then it took me forever to try and get them out from under the seat because there’s hardly any room for me to get my arms under there. I tried it as a test and I just said never again. I cannot get these cats once they get free. I have to travel soon and I’m dreading it with the same two cats again. my fat one sits up front in her mesh carrier while I’m driving and my little one poor thing is in the backseat, but I feel like the air doesn’t get back there so much she always gets the short end of the stick. I would be afraid to let them roam free because in Kentucky and probably Georgia. You can get a ticket because that goes under the distraction law I looked it up, not having your pet secured. my SUV has one of those consoles too, but it’s not as wide as yours and even if I put a blanket there, I just don’t think it would be secure if I slammed on the brakes. then when you have to stop at the gas station or every time you have to stop, you have to try and struggle to get your cat and put it back in the cage. I guess your cats are trained and are very good cats mine aren’t. because it’s so hot right now if I had to get them acclimated to the SUV, I would have to run my engine for 20 minutes. i still think they would be terrified because they both went to the vet recently and they would be thinking they’re going to the vet. you make it look so easy, but it’s definitely not in my case. I am a solo traveler so I guess it helps to have two people as well.

Well, all my cats get a long but Roska. She just likes to start issues and be a bully. Squeak and I used to stalk Dasey & Diesel when they were kittens and they would run up to him when he was on his leash and want to play when they were feral. No issues there. When Dasey and Diesel started coming inside, they would hide from Roska under the couch and hiss. They just finally started sticking up for themselves and she backed down. To get Roska to back down, I have to get her scared so she goes into hiding like them. When we all moved into the first RV for the winter, all the cats hid for a week. Roska calmed down a lot during this time as she hid with Dasey & Diesel. Now she attacks them but she play attacks them and they all bat their paws at each other and walk away.

We made a follow up video about the litter box. Here is the link to it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/foCpXpJ_p7KHiJY We just keep the lid open most of the day so they just use it when needed.

Traveling definitely isn’t for all cats.

Im sorry but I beg to differ - those cat window seats are not safe at all, also if you let them move freely during the drive that is not safe either.... I bet that your cats like this kind of travelling, but I would not recommend that at all..... 😒

All animals are definitely different. Always do want is best for them and how they handle traveling.

@PaigeNugent good point about pets getting out after a crash or even during a rescue event where a pet was to flee in shock and fear....to never return or worse struck by a vehicle.. ugh hate to think of/picture that horrific scene. But, the pet restraints although lifesaver would be terribly complicated on a 400 + mile trip and especially a full time nomadic way of life. I have 3 cats and 1 I won't attempt to bathe and he can only be held if I allow him to face me and my hands supporting him in just the right place/way he's mean,has a memory that'll rival Dumbo's and will always get the last swat at me... playfully on my end ..his at first but he will ambush me up to30 min + from the time I piss him off and I've yet to get the last word in on him in near 3 years he will argue worse than Sunny Hoskins... Hopkins.. whatever the banshees name is and Whoopi ever has! He dislikes "The View" as well😊 my other male cat will not let me nor anyone hold him, will not sit on furniture even when I put him on it and he's bigger than a pug easily both have claws and I sure wouldn't wish to tangle with strapping them in an especially tight position and designated location possibly 3 to 4 times a day on a cross country hall. Dogs would take to the belting/strapped in far easier than any cat I feel, but any trip other than around town or 30-50 miles to a event would become complicated with even a Chihuahua or any ankle biter. I'm not knocking your safety system nor great ideas and very helpful suggestions, but we need a better safety net for long hauls and full time life of travel. Perhaps a totally and securely anchored and enclosed rubber cage/carrier type of thing able to be anchored within reaching in by rescue and easy to open latch in case of low visibility due to night or God forbid smoke or possibly having a recent obstruction within the path of reaching the easy open latch. Anyone have the $ we have ideas 😊😂 I've often picture a what if moment of my poor cats slung to and fro while cruising along. Honestly I have and just as often I conjure up great inventions I do not as often remember. But we have enough pet owners, lovers and gypsy animals on the road we all care about any wealthy animal lover can piggyback on my well unthought contraption... Just find me on here and give me a unit with lifetime replacement and we will call it even. Anything will far surpass Mr. Griswold's method lol Chevy Chase 😂
