Peter speaks from experience in handling difficult people and situations. Peter has designed consultant management software so that firms can manage talent resources more effectively. Nice. Reminded me of Milan Kundera's incompatible love dictionaries in a couple. Where someone will use a love word from his (her) love dictionary that will trigger the other. In his novel the Unbearable Lightness of Being. Also, later reminded me of David Foster Wallace's "This is Water" commencement speech. Lastly, I'm here because Steven Minchin speaking to Amanda Palmer on her podcast. Very nice TEDx.

Great talk, Peter. Very recognisable also, on many different levels. I've been applying this technique towards myself first and foremost. The more it healed me, the more I was able to apply it in relation to others. In order to understand them better.

Beautifully presented and oh so profound, especially in this day and age, if I may say. Thank you Peter!

My grandmother used to tell me: "The smartest one is the one who must be prudent". I never ever understood it, until watching this. Keeping the ability to remind that the other is also a human, that the other can feel hurt and is frecquently not actively searching to damage us... Now I get it as a very special use of intelligence (both rational and emotional one)

Beautiful message that I've been learning to apply to my personal relationships. But I have a question - can this be applied to political rivalries, hate speech, and so on? Lately I've had to confront much hateful and violent behavior in the public sphere. Even though it isn't directed at me personally, it has been profoundly affecting my wellbeing. I wonder if using radical empathy in these situations can help me cope and maybe even make a tiny difference in the other side's viewpoint.

I am glad someone is explaining this, but I am terrified it has to be explained. This isn’t some revolutionary idea. The fact that people don’t normally emotion react without a cause should be obvious.
