Prophecies in the story are probably one of my favorite parts of the ASOIAF world, it's so fun to try and interpret them correctly or to be totally shocked when you completely misread a prophecy.

I love Patchface, he's one of the most interesting minor characters in the books. He seems to utter complete gibberish all the time, and then you pick up on one or two of his utterances that tie into actual events and suddenly you want to go back and re-read everything he's ever said to look for clues. I think the shadows coming to dance and then to stay is possibly a warning against Melisandre and her powers. "Dance" is a euphemism for war in the series, I think it's a warning that if you invite the shadows in to help you win the war, you can't just set them aside once the war is over. Obviously there's the shadow babies, and Stannis describes the nightfire visions as "shadows", and Mel herself says shadows are children of the light, there's a heavy shadow theme there. If, as many suspect, the Others aren't the two dimensional bad guys they're painted as, then it's equally plausible that the "lord of light" is actually some malevolent force, even if his servants don't see it. If that's true, then this is Patchface warning against inviting these shadows into the heart of the kingdom for the sake of winning the crown, which is an interesting parallel to Robert drawing the Lannisters close after Tywin helped him win his crown, only to eventually be brought down by them. And of course, the same parallel is all over the place in the books. Ned placing his trust in Littlefinger to deal with the threat of Cersei only to have Littlefinger betray him, or Dany placing her trust in Mirri Maz Duur to save Drogo, being other examples - Dany even says "The price is too high", which I think is Patchface's message. If that's true, I wonder if the old fish eating the young also applies to Melisandre and a possible foreshadowing of a sacrifice of Shireen (Shireen being the young, Melisandre is possibly glamoured and much older than she appears, or maybe Stannis is the old fish if Shireen is sacrificed to aid his cause). Animals (even fish) have been observed to eat their own young where resources are threatened, either during periods where there is little food or where the young are somehow injured or deformed and unlikely to reach maturity. I think a lot of us wonder what could make Stannis sacrifice his own daughter, well maybe Val gave us the clue when she said the greyscale would return. If Shireen was going to die a long and painful death then maybe the old fish would eat the young. It's an interesting reversal of the custom in the North where, during harsh winters, the elderly proclaim they're going out hunting and don't return, in order to preserve resources for their children.

+Barry Hood we do agree there's a possibility the shadows are a reference to Mel & her power over those servants of light

***Spoiler*** My thoughts on patchface's "Into the sea" prophecy. I think it's the battle of Ice “We will march into the sea and out again." Not sea but Lake. Frey's going in the lake that Stannis' army has dug holes into. Fake Frey's "coming out" wearing their uniforms to enter Winterfell after Stannis has been "defeated" "Under the waves we will ride seahorses" Foreshadowing the heavy horses of the Bolton's and Freys going into the waters "and mermaids will blow seashells to announce our coming, oh, oh, oh.” Manderleys (who have gotten to Stannis first) blowing horns to announce Freys/Boltons coming arriving or Manderleys blowing a horn at the gates of Winterfell to signal the "successful" return of the war party after the battle of Ice.

Not to talk shit about the Ghost of High Heart, but the only reason she's more reliable than Melisandre is because she never tries to interpret them. All she does is repeat what she sees.
@dangerdan2592
@dangerdan2592 8 жыл бұрын
Maybe if Melisandre didn't try so hard to interpret her visions she'd be more reliable. Moqorro tends to do this when he's with Victarion. He tells him exactly what sees in the flames.
@stanklepoot
@stanklepoot 7 жыл бұрын
I'd go a step further, actually. It's not just that she doesn't understand them. It's that she tries to force them to fit what she wants to be true. She got her hooks into Stannis big time, so she needed him to be Azor Ahai reborn. So, her "interpretations" all skew that way. Mel asks to see Azor Ahai, and all she sees is Snow. R'hlorr must not be answering my call. She never stops to think that if the Lord of Light doesn't want to show her of vision of him, he could simply refrain from showing her a vision at all. Hell, she even goes out of her way to try and artificially recreate parts of the prophecy with Stannis.
@lobaetoile8440
@lobaetoile8440 7 жыл бұрын
Melisandre tries to understand her flame visions in a literal way, not considering enough her lack of information or the real life context. She choses one interpretation and believes it must be true, then she even distorts her understanding of real life events/people's behavior to make them fit with that one interpretation of the prophesy she's following. Her biggest mistakes are: that she should always consider/have in mind every possible interpretation/every possibility, and that she shouldn't assume the visions have an at face value meaning. For example, she constantly sees snow in her flames, and she doesn't consider it could mean something important. (Although I can't blame her for this in particular, I would also be frustrated in her place.) An other problem she has is that she sees the world/people in black or white/evil or godlike saviors, and she believes she has to do anything it takes in order "to make destiny come truth", she doesn't consider destiny as something real people build/create with their desicions/conscious actions but as something people should submit to, something people should follow blindly. I also think she believes too much in magic, in the sense that burning people and making magical sacrifices won't resolve everything... Finding the right prophetic man won't automatically save the world either... She underestimates people, the influence/power of politics, quality leadership, etc. In a way, Mel lacks human understanding, she's judgemental and narrow minded. In a way, she's naive. If she was willing to be a bit less secretive and share her knowledge with someone else (trustworthy like Davos), maybe she could find some better possible answers. Two+ minds think better than one.
@lenceagle1

This is fantastic!! Thank you for it, Gwen and Yoke. I think when Melisandre sees someone with skulls, it means that person will come back from the dead. Patchface was likely dead before he was resucitated, and Jon Snow. . .well, we'll see.

Mel as Nissa ... all that seems to be lacking is Jon loving her and experiencing extreme pain in having to sacrifice her. There's the scene where she glamours herself to make him ever so briefly think it's Ygritte, but later she says "he loves me not" as she seems to accept that getting Jon to fall for her (as, for example Devon has) isn't going to work. But as you say, if she saves his life ... I mean ... that's a pretty good opening pickup move I suppose.

A stellar presentation. Thank you. The readings, music, and handling of this delightfully mind twisting subject is sublime enjoyment. I love your take on these prophecies. As for Drogon being the stallion I thought of Jon and Ygritte talking about the stars in Jon III, ASoS. The Stallion is one of them though the Wildlings call it the Horned Lord interestingly. Sort of supports a stallion in the sky point. Totally blew my mind with Rhaella possibly being Quaithe. You two are so sharp. It's brilliant. I thought of Dany dropping the ring of Rhaella's in the final episode of the show last season. Maybe a nod to some influence from her mother yet to be revealed in the books by D and D? Thank you for expanding my little realm. I notice a lot of fans saying how you have enhanced their readings. So true.💙

I'm thinking Rhaella,if alive, may also know much about Varys and have good cause to mistrust him.. Jaime mentions how Varys was always whispering in Aerys's ear. The last patch face prophecy is foretelling Stannis's battle for Winterfell I think. "I will lead it" I believe Patchface is calling Stannis a fool. The Seahorses is referring to the Stannis bannermen the Velyrians and the Mermen are the Manderly's who are guarding the walls of Winterfell.

Great work as always! To me you're the number one experts on ASOIAF and many times I've valued your thoghts and explanations as pure knowledge! This time I was very impressed by the Patchface presentation, which gave a new perspective on a character so easy to feel uneasy with... But, like many other times, your work, always so well documented, helps the understanding of many aspects of the saga, and after listening to you many things start to make sense in a way, that seems to me, pretty close to what I think are the author's intentions. The way you present the facts is always coherent with your intelligent deductions. Thanks so much, keep on with the good work, ciao, winter.

One thought for the difficult "starfish soup" -- if Fish in the "old fish eat the young fish" prophecy is Freys and the Mallister sigil is a star (a house strongly tied to the Florents and the red god) perhaps starfish soup refers to the Manderly's leading the lesser northern lords to feast on Frey supporters and Stannis supporters alike? I believe I read a theory that the Northern loyalists are really just playing Stannis and the Bolton/Frey alliance until the two destroy each other. I also thought that since Sansa is referred to as a merwife, mermen could actually just refer to the Stark loyalists. Love your videos!

Regarding the Azor Ahai prophecy: The two kings dying, father and son - that could also refer to Stannis and Shireen. She is the King's child after all, his heir, Queen after his death, so the prophecy might be vague or even wrong here. Although Stannis and Shireen are still alive in the books, the events of the show might be some hint as to what will happen in The Winds of Winter. Whenever we get to read it...

Starfish are featured in the sigil of House Ruthermont of the Vale and since the Vale will surely figure prominently in the next two books, I'd go along with your idea that this Patchface prophecy refers to something yet to happen.

I really like the idea of Quaithe=Rhaella. The one thing that would have to be explained is why Quaithe would feel the need to conceal her identity from Dany when she meets her, and during subsequent glass candle communication. Also, Marwyn as the Dragonstone maester really feels right.

It's been a busy time, but I can't believe that I've waited this long to listen to this one! Great show! I loved your HOTU reading. I am wondering if the "treason for gold" could be Tyrion for Casterly Rock, someday, or maybe if the "gold" has to do with Viserion, as you said. I am wondering if Missandei or Tyrion will be Dany's "betrayal for love", but you are right; the "love" triad seems more remote in the story, and no matter how much we think about it, it will help to know more. (As you can guess, I believe that Tyrion will betray Daenerys, at some point.) I agree that Melisandre is a "true believer" when it comes to the Azor Ahai prophesy, and would probably consider it an honor and her destiny to bear her breast for the sword that could be Lightbringer. When the story of Azor Ahai comes along, and the narrator says that they cannot imagine why [Nissa Nissa] would "do such a thing". you can see Melisandre as the only one (at this time, anyhow) with the understanding and willingness to sacrifice herself in this way for a perceived higher purpose. Great thoughts about Marwyn. I'd never considered that he could have been the maester on Dragonstone. The Rhaella idea is an interesting thought to consider, too. It will be poignant if this is the case. Maybe Marwyn could have helped Rhaella fake her death, too. I have illogical reasons to not want this to be true, though, because 1.) as a mother it would be hard to imagine another mother willing to let her young children suffer, all the while training as a shadow binder in order to hopefully return late in the childhood of her surviving child; and 2.) it would break the symmetry of whatever (if anything) it means that Dany, Tyrion and Jon's mothers all died in childbirth. I thought that I read somewhere that Marwyn liked to wear fragrances I hope that he isn't the perfumed seneschal, although there are a handful of candidates for that title already. Thanks again for two hours of listening pleasure!

Amazing episode as always guys, your so consistent i feel its just a given that you've knocked it out the park. However, i was hoping for your take on the dragon has three heads prophecy? Any opinions?

+Snow Wolf123 Thanks! That's a bit of an obscure one, mentioned only by Aemon & Rhaegar (in Dany's vision) so we think we need more information to make a call. We're not even sure if it refers to actual people, and GRRM's comments on the matter haven't cleared up much (he said the three heads don't have to be Targaryens) So we're going to wait and see on this one :)

I think Patchface is an exceptionally interesting character. I noticed you didnt comment on whether Patchface is a prophet/spokesman of the Drowned God. Patchface’s ramblings might have divine insight ha. Anyway thanks for vids. I hold out residual hope that grrm will finish the series but i think it is unlikely given the time thats already passed. Ill be thrilled to be wrong though.

Dany's Stallion is Drogon who literally Mounts the World, she will unite all the Khalasars, cross the poison water as no Khal has done, kill the men in iron suits, tear down their stone houses, and drag their broken gods back to Vaes Dothrak, this I swear, Dany, Daughter of Rhaegar, as the stars look down in witness.

My first thought of the shadow with the flaming sword slaying the golden stag was Mel sacrificing Shireen but the "golden" stag kind of threw that off. Lol guess that's why you guys make the videos and I don't. ;) Thanks for the subject matter! I've been looking for a good prophecy video.

I think lianna was nissa nissa. Thus jon is lightbringer or at least has the imagery around him. Raegar first thought he himself was the prince that was promise. Then he thought it was his first son. But then he wanted a 3rd child. Raegar died in water. The first attempt at lightbringer was quenched in water but broke. Aegon was killed by lannister men : IE lions. The second attempt at lightbringer was quenched in a lion but broke. Then giving birth to jon kill lianna but jon lived. Like lightbringer killing nissa nissa and her live and love went into the sword. Like lianna did by saving jon.

So it seems that the dead man on the on the ship from Dany's visit to the house of the undying is Aeron..... Absolutely no way that anyone in the fandom could have predicted that. My re-listen of your podcasts has been great. Only a few more to go though :(

Drogon as the 'Stallion' that mounts the world, thats an amazing twist. Back when I thought Roose was just severe yet amicable, in show, starting A Game of Thrones a year later, and believed Ramsay retaking Winterfell would be a good thing, and Drogo and Dany would go to Westeros, crazy. Jumping ahead but I really like Owen the Oaf's prophecy about Robert. confused for Stannis, same banner, 'battles would be terribly confusing'.

Until George says otherwise, I'm convinced quaithes prophecy means dany will go east past asshai and circumnavigate the world to get to westeros. I think the light means lonely light because why else would George give it that name. I think vicatarion and the iron fleet will get her there (willingly or not I haven't decided). That also fits because I'm sure Vic is familiar with that island. I've got a good bitmore to go with this theory but I'll leave it there for now. Please let me know what you guys think about this idea and thanks for another great video I've been looking forward to this one.

With such a long wait for the next book in the series, I couldn't help but listen to a lot of ASOIAF podcasts/shows again. It dawned on me that there are people who think Euron paid the faceless men to kill his brother king/lord with a dragon egg. Do you think there as any chance that THIS dragon egg will hatch - and another dragon will come into the story? It would make it a bit easier for another dragon dance... right? One person in Bravos who might be able to hatch a dragon would be the Black Pearl (and her offspring with Aegon the Unworthy) - I'd imagine one of them is the proprietor of the brothel at this point.

Loving that you’re going back through all these episodes so thoughtfully! There’s obviously a chance we see Euron’s egg at some point but assuming it remains in the possession of the Faceless Men it’s unlikely to hatch given how they feel about dragons and Valyrians. If they were to lose it, who knows!

Rhego did die before Drogo. However shortly before that, in the battle at the Lhazarene village, Khal Ogo and his son Fogo died, and in the right order. This is also the battle that Drogo received his eventually mortal wound, and thus it can be considered the catalyst to the funeral-pyre.

I think it is easier to argue that the blood on Patchface's mouth are his own prophecies, his words and his frightful and bloody predictions and ramblings. THAT is why Milesandre sees blood on his mouth, and him surrounded by death.

Actually with regard to the two kings, there is a "king" currently at the Wall, who has been acknowledged by Selyse and the queen's men as such because they are using the customs of the south to call him that, and that's Gerrick Kingsblood. And he has a son who crossed south as one of the hostages Jon took from the wildlings. He's not the king of the wildlings, because he will never be that for them, but he has Raymund Redbeard's blood, and that seems enough for Axell, Selyse & Co.

I can't wait for that one. Then again, I was going back through the list of podcasts and was really surprised to see no Tyrion episode. You've got a Tywin episode, and one focused on his siblings. You've even got Theon and Brienne episodes. Given all that, it was a bit of a shock to see you didn't have one focused on such an important and beloved character. Don't get me wrong, I love all of the others. I was just surprised is all.

Daenerys' eyes are also described as purple at times, and Connington recalls that Reagar's eyes were darker then Aegon's. Not necesserily a significant difference in color between those two. Viserys' eyes were described as pale lilac though.
