00:48 a reference to Lord of the Flies - The speared boar seen on the red building. The first red flag for what is to come. 00:56 the second red flag, concealing the truth. This actually reminds me of a biblical reference The Passover. This is when the doors of the israelites were painted with the blood of a lamb in order for the angel of death to passover. Ex. 12 v 8: "They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire". The inspector is literally a lamb to the slaughter. 1:06: Invites us to look at ourselves more harshly. It's a hard task to do. 1:16: When we do we realise that nothing is really as it seems. Especially if someone is trying to make you see things from their point of view. The children act like they're having fun but it's a dangerous make-shift teeter totter built over a pond. 1:22: 'Justice' based on moral/religious grounds. When religion and morality differ from region to region - what does it mean for justice to be served? Is it merely a (pagan) ceremony that looks/feels good to the crowds? It's become a spectacle to impress the world rather than unveil the truth. e.g.: Osama Bin Laden, Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein all killings seen as 'right' and 'just' in the eyes of americans; guided by the media, leaders, american morals, religious beliefs etc. 1:43: Another instance where the truth (a savagely slaughtered animal) is hidden, literally in a sheet of pastry. Can you swallow the truth? 1:55: Does embellishing the truth (with flowers) take away from it's reality? A touch on capital punishment. Jay Carney stated that the US has a fundamental duty to carry out executions humanely. However, doesn't the act of capital punishment itself fall short of humane standards. The more the man sees through their tricks or questions their logic, the more the the mayor sees him as a threat to his power and desperately tries to persuade and move him along through the town. 2:13: Welcome to corporate america! I'd like to hear some suggestions on this one. But I think it has something to do with how the working class, just trying to make a living, are sheltered and closed off from the realities of capitalism and how the top level guys (ceo's, government MPs, presidents) are actually running the establishments of the country. They're blinded by chasing the dollar and the guy who has something to offer the big guys gets to lead the pack of little guys - no matter how unqualified they may be. 3:04 The wicker man - a film inspired by David Pinner's 1967 novel Ritual and centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Neil Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island have abandoned Christianity and now practise a form of Celtic paganism (wiki). Again, playing on morality in different societies (the end of The Wicker Man is also important here but I don't want to spoil the movie for those who haven't watched it). The inspector finds himself staring at the truth boldly in the face but still he overlooks it. How many signs does it take until you go with your gut? 3:33 Does going with the crowd and turning your back on the truth makes everything better, more scenic, right? The style in animation is brilliant for two reasons: 1. It's based on Trumpton, a BBC show from the 60s. Could Donald TRUMPton be the next mayor/leader of the crowd? And how much of the truth will he embellish with flowers? 2. The use of playdough annimation. Playdough is malleable and can be moulded into anything you want it to be, much like the truth. Does anyone know what the meaning of Jobe and the tomatoes is? Is this another biblical reference to Job (pronounced Jobe)? There is one interesting thing from the bible about tomatoes Corinthians 15v 38: "You could never guess what a tomato would look like by looking at a tomato seed. What we plant in the soil and what grows out of it don't look anything alike. The dead body that we bury in the ground and the resurrection body that comes from it will be dramatically different." Again the true nature of the tomato is revealed through time and a little digging ;)

1:13 is also a thinly veiled reference to "ducking", a medieval practice where a person who floated after being dunked in water was seen as preserving themselves with magic, and was then executed.

So if you survived, they burnt you. Either way you died. Yes. That's EXACTLY how it worked. That's because they didn't really think you were a witch. You just didn't fit in, so they wanted to get rid of you. It worked EXACTLY how they wanted it. You think conservatives wouldn't have burned Obama as a witch back in the day? The meaning is: we all keep our mouth shut when we see injustice, and we look away when the massas exclude those who cannot defend themselves, without realizing WE can be the one who ultimately will be burned at the stake, and the rest of society will also look the other way then. If you don't speak out against a murderous system, the system could murder you. Your own apathetic attitude will eventually come back to you like a boomerang.

The man in the black suit is meant to represent a federal government worker who is assigned to evaluate the conditions of established towns within the country. This town revolves around the leadership of a cult leader who tries to make the village appear as "pleasant" as possible. Examples of this include when they place flowers on the gallows in order to beautify it. Low education/illiteracy is another topic in the video with an example in the misspelling of jobs as "jobes" at 2:23. The picture on 00:48 that reads "The Speared Boar" is a reference to Lord of Flies where a boar is speared by Jack and his followers, and later they place the head of the boar onto a stake. Adding this reference in the video implies that there is savagery in the town despite its peacefully appearance. The town folk are only putting on a facade to appear that they are fully functioning town by trying to do communal tasks to display their interconnections with one another. An example of this can be seen on 1:40 when the woman failed to prepare a meal by butchering a deer and trying to make it look like a pie. Alcoholism is also found in this video. Some of the villagers drink alcohol in broad day light, in public, and while they are working. At the end, all the villagers turn their back at the burning man which indicating that they do not want to see or acknowledge their crime. This act can be interpreted as showcasing nativism and the dangers that it possess for innocent outsiders. Luckily, the federal government worker survived in the end, which implies that the story will continue.

It's interesting how you only see the mouth of the lady in the house whose door is being marked with an X (symbolises witch) and then also the town inspectors mouth when he is being burned alive. The bird at the beginning and end is oblivious to the goings on in the town so the mouth is shown. To me I guess this means that all the other towns folk, as if possessed by something unseen, won't speak out against whatever strangeness is occurring in the town, labelling any outsider or whoever tries to speak up (lady in house) as a witch, hence burn the witch! I guess this makes an important remark about our society and how important it is too communicate and shed light over the way we we live, in order to keep things fresh, otherwise what's left in the dark may stagnate and be left un challenged, someone may take advantage example being the mayor who could be likened too a cult leader who has the control over the rest his people never being challenged... mouths shut. Spooky and awesome song!

@@archivedaccount2000 could be. I heard it was about Muslims and our fear of them born out of social media and gossip we are surrounded by. I was meant to see them but then Manchester arena got blown up by a terrorist. So we seen them a while later at a different venue. (Amazeballs!) Although burn the witch was the latest single. They didn't play it. I think because of the song's meaning and the situation at the time. What do you reckon?
@tempestfennac96875 жыл бұрын
@@amandah5478 I read that the song was first worked on during Kid A's production (according to Wikipedia) but the first evidence of it appeared later on: thekingoflimbspart2.com/lyrics-2/3352-2/ . Given that Hail to the Thief was largely a Take That at Bush/Blair era politics, that interpretation makes sense.

Typical Radiohead, they bring out something new and on the first hearing it's like " hmmm, sounds a bit like something they have done before.....not outstanding...", ah, but then after a few listens, you find the brilliance behind such a simple sounding tune. From Toms gentle yet menacing crooning to the Choppy Staccato violins slicing and dicing away......Thumbs up Tom, you never let me down in your genius Inventiveness when it comes to Music.

couldn't have said it better. they have the same effect on me. pretty much anything I end up absolutely loving sounds mediocre the first time I hear it. only after it starts to become familiar, and leaves a mental imprint on my brain do I start to fully appreciate it. at least when it comes to more complex compositions. on the other hand, I instantly knew I loved many of their more simplistic songs from the bends and ok computer.

Every Radiohead album has a feel to it in my opinion Pablo Honey - A studio in late 90s Vancouver The Bends - A suburbian home studio where many a jam session has been held OK Computer - Walking through the streets of a semi-dystopian, lifeless city (kinda like the present day) Kid A - A claustrophobic, small room where someone's gone mad Amnesiac - See Kid A Hail To The Thief - A highway just outside a major city In Rainbows - Floating through deep space, having accepted your eventual fate The King Of Limbs - A walk through an ancient European forest on a damp April morning A Moon Shaped Pool - A grey, rainy day where all you can do it stare out the window
