Poor Jonny, at the end when Thom and Colin walk off you can see how upset he is with himself; he wrote this awesome beat on an impossible machine (to your average joe), and of course sometimes it won't work. It's really nice to see that Colin's still upholding his promise to his mother to take care of little brother, even just that little affectionate messing with Jonny's hair would've at least made him realise that it was ok, don't worry about it little bro, there's always next time.

They're only human and let's be honest this is probably the thousandth time they've played this live. You're bound to get it wrong 1 out of 100 and it's a very difficult song for Jonny even if he is a musical genius. I'm not happy to see Thom give up, really though when the song is butchered there isn't anything left to do but to stop and regroup. And that's what they did, they regrouped and came back out for another set. And another thing, this band have been mates for 30 years, look at every other band from the late 80's and early 90's who are still making music today. How many can you say still have all their original band members from the very beginning? Yes they get on each others nerves but they're still together where as many many other bands who are still active today gave up and quit.
@WickedLiquid8 жыл бұрын
Some members have left bands because of drugs like Layne Staley of Alice in Chains or Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins or John Frusciante of the Chili Peppers. While others left because the band mates just couldn't stand each other anymore like having to deal with lunatic divas like Axl Rose or Courtney Love. Just goes to show that after so many years Thom still cares about getting the songs done right. This is a good sign for any Radiohead fan. And even now, years later they are still making music and passionate about what they do. That's what you want to see.

Colin patting Jonny on the head is so sweet. Truly shows how he is used to Thom often losing his temper. Jonny messing up on Idioteque was expected, since it is an incredibly hard song to play live. You can see that he looks disappointed in himself after Thom comes back. Which he really shouldn’t have been. Operating that machine that has what, like 10000 buttons? Like it is obviously very very VERY difficult to use. Poor JonJon🙏.

As a musician I can’t imagine many things scarier than trying to patch a modular synth to a specific pattern with Thom Yorke breathing down my neck. I also know next to nothing about how to use modular synths, which is probably part of the reason why.
@Gorillaz12d10 жыл бұрын
People need to not get mad at them... Thom or Jonny... they both fucked up... Jonny fucked up by not handling the synth correctly and Thom fucked up by leaving but it happens... and it's easy to call it unprofessional when you're sitting at your computer but when you're actually going on tours and playing long shows it probably gets so stressful and having a performance get fucked is enough to make you that angry.

why Thom so piss about it? couples of time Thom also mess up the song in concert by singing lazily and out of tone. Jonny is a genius, and he rarely, again rarely make a mistake in live, Thom was way more clumsy. I'm talking here as a hard core radiohead fans but this vid really piss me off.

But if the rythms get out of sync the whole thing kind of falls apart, if the singer sings a bit off key it's not as big of a deal, the rest of the band's flow doesn't get affected the same way.
@willscomix9 жыл бұрын
Haroon Rancak I'm not sure any of them really knew what to do if that machine starts messing up, nobody's mentioned this happening at any other gigs. Modular synths are complex shit to use live and if something fucks up, it's incredibly difficult to get yourself back on track. When you're all on stage together, the pressure can get to you.
@tylerdurden53039 жыл бұрын
+Haroon Rancak The Modular Synth requires the correct (and a constant) voltage in order to work correctly. When you're in a studio it's easier to control the voltage going to the equipment, but when they are on tour they (sometimes) get irregular voltage differences. This causes the Modular Synth to go out of tune, hence why it sounded shite and why Thom was pissed off. Jonny was trying his best to get the equipment working correctly but he was fighting a losing battle (also the reason why Colin gave him a little tap on the head, as a "good try" gesture.)
@bathtubreverie9 жыл бұрын
+Tyler Durden I also noticed for that tour Jonny didn't use his original space echo live, instead the boss re-issue, less troublesome on the road I suppose... I wonder if they'll get Clive in again for the next live tour and just sample Jonny's modular onto his drum pad.... Or the drum pad as a midi controller and try to match the sounds to a non-patchable analog synth like the dsi tempest.... It also looked like there were problems with the monitors... Still, not the mess it could have been given the circumstances; matching a modular to two drummers and not to mention all the other sounds/textures that radiohead utilise

I can almost guarantee that there would have been zero negative tension backstage after this happened. Thom basically worships Jonny's technical and musical capabilities. Jonny is continuously taking risks and pushing boundaries, and if there is one single factor that makes Radiohead exceptional, that would be it. Besides, Thom doesn't seem the least bit emotional or frustrated. It was a case of them experiencing a rare glitch, which will almost certainly be identified and corrected before the next show. Accept defeat, shrug shoulders, have a cigarette break, finish the set with something more straightforward. No big deal.
@T-roccBABY4 жыл бұрын
Y'know, I'm glad these videos of him always getting upset that this song has a 50% success rate of being performed live exist. They could have taken the easy way with recordings decades ago but they still keep it genuine, despite that decent chance for failure. That's some great dedication to quality, to me.

@soulmachine67527 жыл бұрын
the mistake was not radioheads or jonnys. it was whoever is responsible for their sound at coachella. some people are getting confused. they have played this song a million times without any problem. usually this kind of problems happens at festivals.
@urhomies7 жыл бұрын
Thom's reaction is hardly surprising. He's a perfectionist. Besides, they work so incredibly hard for every album that after every album release they are all struggling with burnout and basically hate each other. Especially Thom who has struggled with depression more than once because of the stress and pressure.
