If you like the jazz swing feel of Radiohead, then you'd appreciate the feel of Pyramid Song. Unique Latin swing feel. No guitars though.

If I’m not mistaken - Ed makes the sound you thought was a synth with his guitar - he loops a few notes in his memory man - then manipulates them with his distortion pedals, vol pedal and pitch shifter. (That might be what he used the pick for)
@ExileOnDaytonStreet
@ExileOnDaytonStreet 3 жыл бұрын
Ed's such a magician. I really enjoyed the 6:18 mark of this video where DH is clearly some mixture of entranced and bewildered by the effect he's doing. Kind of funny that he was so confused by the fact that Ed's use of the pick was never on camera. I honestly think it knocked the score down a few tenths of a point.
@muzikkification
@muzikkification 3 жыл бұрын
You're right - I think he might be using an Eventide shimmer/pitch effect from one of their reverb pedals to get the reverb/pitch shift effect, or something similar. He also might be emulating a vol pedal by lowering the attack on the pedal so it crescendos, but I haven't done any research so I'm probably wrong!

You guys have heard the original version from years and years back, right? It's not that different, but it's got a lovely organ bit in it (that was just barely represented in the finished vocals by some ahhs but only for a very short section). Might be neat to compare, if you haven't. It's from sometime between Bends / OKC if I remember right. From what I've heard it's thematically to do with fears had during a sexual encounter. That line makes complete sense in that context, right? Social norms getting in your head when you're trying to perform. Thinking things like am I actually too messed up in the head or am I being edgy and cute. That anxiety that nags you about everything along the way. The bit where he says "you'll paint yourself white and fill up with noise but there'll be something missing" is great too. Really this song is just a whole entire feeling in terms of lyrics. Not actually sure what painting yourself white means but I can imagine it meaning putting on a front, or trying to meet a vibe... even possibly, getting a little angry (just a little... y'know what I mean). It definitely sounds like an anxiety voice speaking, to me. This isn't going to work, you look stupid trying, etc. Very relatable.

The rhythm guitarists Ed is a huge pedal guy and is a huge follower of the Edge of U2 Johnny is lead on Keyboard and Ebow, also a huge synth guy. The bassist is one a huge amazing guy. The album Kid A was almost Emerson Lake Palmer esque with bending the rules. Johnny Greenwood (the lead guitarist) reinvented himself and went synth and therum style that moved the band forward in great ways. It started with OK Computer. One of the top 100 Alt albums and the OK Computer blew that door open.

With the exception of Paranoid Android, we've really avoided Radiohead's more majestic tracks so far. I was pretty happy to see one of their most beautiful songs finally come around. Aaaaaand at this point, I'm thinking that this might be as good of a review as we'll get out of this guy on Radiohead. Which is fine. I don't need DH to actually like Radiohead (he clearly doesn't, the parts he likes he comes off to me liking more out of respect than enjoyment), and it's actually kind of interesting to see him tear down songs that have really entrenched themselves in my soul.

@@j.prt.979 You're right, I suppose he did. At this point, though, I'm convinced he might light the rocking side of RH. Maybe Just. Probably Bodysnatchers. But probably not Myxomatosis (although he might dig the fact that the feel of that song doesn't quite match the time signature). Hard to picture him digging too much else. I'd love it if he would get into How To Disappear or Pyramid Song or Present Tense, but I won't get my hopes up. He'd still have very interesting things to say about all of those those songs, though, I just have low hopes he'd actually enjoy it.

It was sooooo ethereal. I could have used less vocals, which I understand is the major thrust of the song. I just started getting bored of him doing his thing. Then started wondering how it sound if somebody like Tom Waits sang instead.

This singer just projects his voice outside of his whole mouth - must be difficult to do and control pitch so higher registries aren't going to be so pleasing so it's a choice with a few down sides.

The first time you're saying "oh cool an e-bow", well it wasn't. It was Jonny Greenwood playing his Ondes Martenot keyboard (you can hear him also at the very end). So, there's an e-bow of course, but not only. Basically on this recording, Ed is left ear, Jonny right ear. I love the from the basement sessions but the filming is a bit erratic ...

Personally, I've always hated what they did to this song. The live versions like this one aren't bad, but it always kind of upsets me knowing how it sounded before. From seeing what other people say about the song around the internet, I know that some people agree with me and others feel completely the opposite. Some Radiohead fans who feel the opposite may try to slaughter me for daring to speak badly about a song they like, but we can all have our opinions on the song and no one is right or wrong for preferring a particular version. I've just always thought that essentially everything about the earlier versions of the song were infinitely better. The vocals, the arrangement, the extra verse and chorus that you find in some versions of the song (like the one linked), the instrumentation, and most of all, that marvellous loud, heavy, distorted outro which you find in some versions (again, such as the one linked). This has got to be my overall favourite version of the song, although there are elements in some versions which I prefer to this one, such as the vocal line at the end of the final verse, among other less important things. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqLReneOaK12jKc
