Saw an interview about how Thom tried to fit all of this into the album version. He spent a whole day on a single element of the tune and the arrangement was driving him mad. Ed and Jonny sent him out for a walk. Took the track and stripped it back to what we know today. Stripped back guitar, barely any drums, muted piano and electronics. Thom came back from his walk and listened to it, burst into tears and ordered it to never ve touched again. :)

As someone who found Radiohead in 06 and had IR be their first new RH album, having only just discovered this version of Videotape... they're both incredible in their own ways. The intricate syncopation and forceful instrumental build of this - is Thom playing chords in a major key? the piano feels more powerful than the sparse, empty production on IR - has more emphasis and goes harder, while the album version is almost an exercise in limited effort and negative space, not needing anything more than it holds inside. I just heard a stripped down live version of Videotape in NYC last weekend, and while I'd love to hear this one come back someday, I see them as equals, both incredible.

I think this and the album version are both equally great. The complexity in the simplicity of the album version is just insane if you think about it. That version just has no rythmical reference to what's happening in this version. The upbeat of the piano everytime Thom hits a chord on the album is still there, but there is no reference for him to keep track of the actual beat of the song what so ever on that record. That's just genius in my opinion and it takes an insane amount of skill to perform.
@likeaspinningplates21382 жыл бұрын
You’re right in roughly everything, it’s a beautiful thing they have going on in the underlying rhythm. That’s why it’s my favourite band, because of the details. They mean everything me. And to many more Ps.: the upbeat is 1/8 note ahead of the piano chords :) that’s why it’s syncopated
@john-alexandermatsos2877 Жыл бұрын
