I met Keith Moon at the Boston premier of the film "Stardust", in which he had a role. I was 14. I asked him what happened that time he passed out on stage. He glared at me and snipped, " Well, I really don't remember,young man, you see I was unconscious at the time".

Today I had a dream where Pete Townshend was playing in my town and almost nobody showed up, I was at the front row, felt really bad for him. He was upset. At the end of a song we were all clapping, but I had a nail polish bottle in my hand so I was poorly clapping, and Pete got even MORE upset. I'm sorry Pete.

@@suncat5160she looks pretty young, if that's her. Probably not a ton of Townshend fans among her social group. She projected her own feeling of isolation onto Pete; hence the empty audience. She's proud of her discerning taste and for being aware that following the crowd is not the way to fulfillment, but she still needs to build herself up sometimes (as we all do); hence the desire to applaud, to let him know she was there for him and appreciative. Remember: Pete is HER. However, she worries that concern for image is stopping her not only from fully being herself, but from fully being THERE for herself: the nail polish, which it never occurred to her to simply drop or put in her purse. She HAD to keep a grip on that, on that image, even if it meant silencing herself. Or. She was painting her toenails while listening to "Rough Boys," had some spicy chili, and passed out.

Townsend wrote “I Hope I Die before I get Old” because back then he was angry at the over 30 generation saying they were cold blooded. Then your generation gets older and you find your just as flawed as they were. Then what do you do? Die off or keep living? He decided to keep living. And I’m glad he survived because he has a keen mind and wrote great songs. The world would be poorer without his contributions to it.

And Pete was quick to recognize this. 1965's “I Hope I Die before I get Old” eventually became 1971's "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Although the people changed, the old institutions and value systems did not.

Alcohol makes the eardrums much more susceptible to damage, especially when the sound source is very close, such as with headphones. Thank you so much, Pete. I was born 9 years after the end of WW II. My father was shot at at the eastern front in 1945 and he was severly wounded. He was 19 years old. It took till i was about 40 years old until i became clear about the influence of that war to my life. But much earlier i felt deep inside that Tommy had something to say about that influence. My father died from drinking in 1986. Your music helped me a lot to enjoy life and get clear.

Pete is such an inspiring guitar player. I never realized that until the last 10 or 25 years. My son is all about David Gilmore and rightly so but I'm have been trying to turn him on to the brilliance of Pete Townshend. I enjoyed this little Q&A thing Pete put together and realized that some people ask the stupidest question.

I meant Entwhistle back in the mid 90s, and asked him about his hearing damage. He also blamed headphones in the studio, NOT their loud concerts. I thought he was joking, but after hearing Townsend say the same thing, I suspect that he actually wasn't. Dang.
@MicahS70T5M
@MicahS70T5M 4 жыл бұрын
Dave Westner with loudspeakers (normal speakers like in a concert or home stereo) loud volumes produce much more distortion, because they literally need more power/movement to produce the same sound level than the relatively tiny headphone diaphragm does less than an inch from your ear. Often, distortion is largely what makes you recognize music as loud, even if you don't recognize it as distortion. But with very high quality and robust speakers or headphones which don't need much power to produce crazy SPLs, you can destroy your hearing without even knowing how loud it is. :) -Micah

If you like listening to Pete talking you should downloaded his Autobiography Who Am I on Audible which he narrates, it's brilliant such an amazing life from young abused child to top band of the mod movement to rock legend and one of the best song writers the modern age. The books worth a read but the narrated audible book is priceless I must have listened to it a dozen times in the last 4 years. Promise I'm not working for Audible Ive just been a massive who fan since I was a 12 year old mod in 1980 and discovered the my Generation album when Paul Weller said it was his fav album at that time in an NME interview.

Pete Townshend is the GREATEST rock composer of all time! WHY? I’ll tell you. He wrote the best most perfect album of all time. And it was not just an album but a double album. Every song is perfect. No filler or wasted tracks. It is called, QUADROPHENIA. I believe that no one will ever put together a work as timeless and awesome as Quadrophenia. Thank you Pete.
