really interesting to hear what is actually "bad" on a focusright!
@RadiumRecordsHollywood10 күн бұрын
haha! Right?! I think most people just assume they know what the "bad" is on these interfaces... Side note, the 2i2 Gen 2 is the best sounding out of any of these Focusrite Scarlett interfaces and it's shocking how many people in the comments prefer that distortion/ phasing/ and smearing... It can actually be "musical" on certain things!

Thank you Bradley, this was really informative and really helpful. I've been thinking about maybe upgrading my interface for the last couple years and this now has really kind of sealed the deal for me. For me, I think it's the Apollo X4 what's interesting is that in the shootout I was focusrite almost every time... and I wonder if I have just bonded to that frequency range because I've been using it for so long. However, in the stereo out playback into your monitors there was no comparison and the Apollo X4 just stole the show completely. Once again, thank you so much. You helped me out a lot. Love your Channel!
@RadiumRecordsHollywood14 күн бұрын
That tends to be the case with a lot of interfaces actually! Now, let’s be REALLY fair here, I didn’t use the unison tech for the preamps/ plugin combos with the x4 or twin, as they would have blown every interface out by far… Secondly, YES! The DAC in the x4 is far superior to all of these interfaces, hands down. If you heard it in the room, you’d be shocked. Not to mention the headphone amp/ DAC

A lot of people like B because it doesn't represent all frequencies and can sound already EQ'd on the way in... Usually due to the top end being smeared and on initial recording/ playback this comes off as "more detailed". The BIG issue with it is, once you start stacking a bunch of tracks with this smearing and phasing, it start to need tons of EQ and corrective measures which then makes a song sound metallic/ sterile/ too bright/ etc. (All these opinions coming from decades with this interface of course)
@fondusportfolio13 күн бұрын
@@RadiumRecordsHollywood This makes so much sense because I've only ever owned two interfaces, the focusrite solo and audied id mkii (current). I will work my way up towards investing in a better interface once ready. Thanks for the response, Bless

Round 1 (Vocals) - Has to be C for me. It sounded more rounded. Round 2 (Acoustic Guitar) - D this time round, the guitar was more warm, and the highs were not crushing my ears like B. C was also great here, but D takes it. Round 3 (Hi-Z) - D bass was really bassing as the lows were well rounded, and the highs were smooth for my ears. Round 4 (Line Inputs) - I could hear such a major difference that im scared of my mixes now 😮 but C, for me, sounded more musical close to the sound being presented. Final Round (DACs) - D for me just well rounded and more balanced. Now gonna listen to your take.

Thanks for doing this video @RadiumRecordsHollywood 😊 I do have a question for you, because now I'm rethinking my interface just knowing that I'm mixing based on what I'm hearing and this is crazy that there is such a big difference if you listen closely. Is it worth changing an interface to suit your ears more than having one and making the mixing process harder?
@NathanFlynnMusic15 күн бұрын
Hey! :) Great video! Here's what I thought! On first listen on the vocals my favourite was D as it sounded the clearest in the high end to me and worked with the music the best imo. I'd say it sounded most like there was someone in front of me singing. My least favourite on vocals on first listen was C. Interestingly my favourite for acoustic guitar was C it sounded the most full bodied and rich to me, the replication on the low mids was warm, as well as the high mid/high end break up on the strumming had great character. switching to D afterwards it became thing to be and had less life too it and lost that almost "crunchy soft saturation" sound that C had for me. I liked the clarity and presence in B for acoustic, A was the least clear and had less transient information on the strumming than the rest for me. For the bass for favourite was C, it had the nicest tone to me again sounded rich and more complete. A sounded faraway interestingly now that could be because like I mentioned for the acoustic it had less transient information me therefore less clear. B had a nice bass response but lacked the mid presence that C had for me. D was my second favourite for bass slightly less clear for me in the mids. I'm doing this as I'm going along currently here are my predictions: A - Focusrite, B - Presonus, C - Newest Apollo, D - Apollo Mark II For the JUNO first sample. It's reaffirming again what I'm thinking. C was my favourite again as it had the clearest definition in the high end for me, slightly more than B when switching from it. Going to A to B, weirdly to me, B sounded wider than A?? haha. Maybe that's because I'm perceiving more high end with B after switching too it. D sounded more silkier in the high-end than C to me but C closer to a finished record sound and is slightly grittier and has a nicer breakup for me in the high mids. For the JUNO bass, C again is my favourite but D is a close second, I hear the squelchiness of the bass synth come out more on C compared to B when listening through. But D just had slightly less uppermid/high end detail for me. Final round!!! D to A converters - On first impressions which switching to B to from A I perceived more high end clarity and definition. C sounded most professional to me, sounded punchy and the most polished and cleanest in the mids and highs. C also had greater transient representation than A. D was the punchiest for me! OK! What?!? haha. Just saw the results. Lol this is funny. I didn't comment for A on one of them I'm pretty sure because I was sure it was my least favourite out of the overall. But wow. Really surprised by the focusrite, great what they're doing allowing accessibility for cheap to musicians at that price range. C was my favourite overall, it did just sound the best. Great definition, great transient replication, sounded full when recording instruments and on playback. Amazing job UA!! The presonus was great too, don't think I've ever heard that interface, sounded really good, was a great contender. Thanks so much for this, I feel this may have helped develop critical listening skills too! It was great fun too, thank you! Made my evening haha. Would love more of this type of thing. I feel like I've been to the audio gym haha. Have a great week! God bless. 😄

And Focusrite was just 2nd Gen, they improved a lot in 3rd Gen. I bought Focusrite Scarlett and Audient 2019 to test them side by side. Audient was expensive but Focusrite sounded much better so I returned Audient. I was surprised and it's still working. Difference in KZbin videos is much less noticeable because of trash KZbin audio quality, in studio I'm sure difference will be much more noticeable

Useful shootout, thanks. I wasn't paying too much attention to the differences between the others, but listened for which one was best in most. And I did choose C. Broadly, because it seemed to have the most bandwidth, the highs were present and extended, as were the lows - only C represented both the highs and lows both present and in balance. And it sounded the clearest too. And I suppose I was listening out for which one I found a big suspect, and that was D, sounded somewhat veiled, flat and indistinct. I also thought the Saffire held up, about equal to the Twin, I found both sounded good. The Saffire lacked the bass of the Apollo Gen 2, and the Twin lacked the extended high-end. Be interested to hear a shootout between the convertors, the next rung up the price ladder. Maybe including the Apollo X8 Gen 2, and pitching it against competitors like the Lynx Aurora N(8).

Round 1: C, it seems like the entire frequency range of the vocals was picked up properly. You could hear everything pretty clearly. Round 2: I’m torn between B and C because B sounds clean and not so much boom in the low end so it makes me think the signal is cleaner but, C picks up the low end and the frequency are pretty articulate and clear. Round3: B and D sound really good but I think B had the cleanest sound coming through because you can clearly hear and feel the boom in the lower frequencies in the bass playing. Round 4: literally have no clue for some reason, I could not tell a difference 😂 Round 5: was tough but I think D might have been the one with the most range in the frequencies and it sounded good

Round 4 I think (synth round): I thought A was fine although slightly aggressive in the highs, good for just basic tracking down a synth, but didn't have a specific tone that stood out to me other than ''Fine'' or good enough. B I immediately heard the stereo field was a bit different from A and was panned out to the right slightly which I think gives it a depth in a mix to be in it's own space without needing to pan it LOL. But the left side from what I could tell did sound a bit odd like some distortion or something so I didn't like that (Could be my ears) Heard C, and sounded very rich and didn't even fully notice till I heard C was the high end didn't sound harsh or fatiguing. Very pleasant to listen to. D was okay, I think the stereo field on D is my second favorite and felt like It didn't take away from the synth

Sweet! This is fun! Round 1 - C This is the most musical and a natural recorded environment. Went well with the track automatically which is nice to have it sound great from start. Nice low/mid/high and complimented the voice. Round 2 - A. This round was hard for me. While A sounds like many guitars I've heard on records w the boominess taken away, C kept the low end even and mature sounding. but was missing a bit of high end compared to A. Might have been the playing? C is my second choice for the even ness, but didn't seem to sound like a band sound, but solo artist. Round 3 - C again for some reason. It is musical/natural. The bass low frequency was smooth sounding, the right bass frequency seemed to stand out with a nice natural clarity in the upper frequencies. Compared to the others sounded a hair compressed, maybe because the frequencies were even sounding? Peace! Round 4 - B just sounds like my favorite Prince record already. Seems natural, mixed and on a stage. Round 5 - C I think C kept more low end in and sounded right.

Round 4: Bass - A was cool, although the low mids sounded oddly kinda... muddy? Or just cloudy and like it was just sloshing around. When I heard B it confirmed what I initially thought, the low end sounded a bit fuller but MUCH clearer, didn't have that weird mud I was hearing (Still leaning to the right Ear more than the other interfaces. C def sounded the best, stereo field was focused and had great lowend and the highs we're slightly shaven off in a good way and gave a nice warmth and really sounded analog! 4 Was okay but sounded a bit ''Digital''. Not a big fan. Usuable if that's all you have, but thats it. It was USUABLE. just sounded.. thin or something not quite sure

Final round: A I noticed sounded good and had no real faults with it... Although could be due to the microphone, but felt like kinda murky sounding idk. B sounds way cleaner than A and the high end sparkled a bit (but a tiny bit harsh). The kick especially was thumping way better and could feel it a bit compared to A. C surprised me a tad. It lacked that punch that I got from B but the bass and vocal sounded so full, POWERFUL, and it really grabbed my attention more than any of them. Especially the bass line felt alive. High end and high mids sounded balanced but still shined at the same time, felt very magical. That kick and clap sounded way better and really cut through. D: the vocals sounded oddly like it was being masked and buried into the instrumental, and like the other rounds sounded oddly digital in a way. Can't put my finger on it, but def not my favorite Okay that's my picks for the rounds!!

I find tests like this so hard. It depends on what mindset you are in when you are listening and what part of the spectrum you are focusing on (listening to the vocals on one take you might like it better but listening to the snare on another listen and you don’t like it as much)… The first listen through I was leaning towards B and C for most things. I preferred B on the vocals the first listen. But 1st listen was hard because they all sound so close. On second pass i listened in a way thinking about “what sound would I like to mix with” i.e. “which sound has the most detailed and balanced frequencies.” From that point it was C hands down winner. Everything is there and balanced and it would be the easiest and quickest to work with. D is next, but there is something ‘hard’ or ‘clinical’ sounding about it that isn’t as pleasing. And it’s hard for me to tell if it sounds like it has more detail because the high mids seem to be a bit more forward? A - has cool vibe something that draws me to the low mids/warmth but is lacking the details compared to C and D to me across the whole spectrum (but it has more balance than D I think, so it’s a toss up). B is the most different and lacks the most balance and detail. After listening with this mindset B was least favourite on everything, but it has a sound - kind of smeared/lo-fi (although a bit harsh sometimes). It seems to lack a bit of details in the high mids which i think draws my focus to the lower mids and (warmth). But this is confusing because it's also a bit harsh. Hmmmm...So locking in C-D-A-B.

A seemed pretty clear nothing added or taken out on pretty much each source material B had more depth of sound on pretty much everything but didn’t add way too much. I did notice the A/D D/A comparison of B was a little more beefy. C made almost every source material louder in perceived loudness even tho they were gain matched, sometimes good sometimes bad, like the acoustic guitar. It was a little bit distorted in sound (JUST TO ME) D added a little something to every source material but wasn’t too beefy. It was just really clear yet adding depth. I noticed it seemed to open up in range of highs and lows when the mix switched to D pretty much every time. Little more sheen.

C may be my choice for the overall winner - clean, musical, and feels generally well balanced, D would be my 2nd choice or honourable mention. Vocal - C first choice lively and transparent, D would be my second as it feels flat but not lifeless - neutral for starting a mix. Guitar - C well balanced and brings out body of guitar's sonics, D again as second option even though this time guitars do feel flat. Bass - D may win this round for me battling closely with C, D feels more neutral which I love whilst C is more transparent and open. Juno - C or D on synth ( C hifi, feels very high quality vs D more neutral), C 100% on Juno Bass hands down. DAC - C or D this was tough, both have good transient response and feel very musical C feels very open and transparent, D more neutral which I also like.

Round 2 I liked C the best, B 2nd, A 3rd, and D last this time! Round 3 C sounded most balanced, others ranked same order as round 2. Round 4 I liked C the best, then B, A, and D last. Round 5, C was noticeably clearer to me, then B, D, and lastly A. I guess I liked in round 1 the mid forwardness D gave the vocals, but interface C seemed to be my fav all rounder

A sounds a little dull to me. B is clear but maybe a little distorted in the upper range. C is great, it has the depth and clarity that I like. D sounds different, bit warmer, I also like that. C is my favorite.

wow, pretty similar conclusion as you! for me C felt overall like its not hiding sub-bass (could be a good or bad thing really), had more full/warm sound while sounding more precise troughout the frequency range, B was specially bad in the DAC test because of the "digital hash" which some confuse with high frequency details

For me, all of them interface C sounds the best. Hated the B, its got some type of harshness on the top end that im gonna end up getting rid of. C i'd say its got some type of warmness without making it feel dull or muffled. And the top end was clear, but without sounding to "metallic" or like a fake EQ. I have an apollo twin, if my apollo twin is B, imma cry cuz it was expensive. Though i believe that interface B was the cheaper one, because it does sounds cheap. Let's see if I was right or wrong.

Scuze my ignorance but what's with the clipped waveforms? PS: Is your hair acting as a 'comb filter'? 🤣

@@outlawedbeats Yea, I've used Apogee interfaces before... Pretty much all of them, including their flagship symphony I/O stuff. It's incredibly good when you use an external clock but it's overpriced in my opinion. I'd be curious to try out the symphony desktop though, I'd give it a spin!

Vox: CABD A. Sounds well balanced and detailed. Sound like it could take both EQ and Compression without getting harsh. B. A bit thin and less detailed compared to A. Does not cut through the mix as well. Would need some EQ. C. Similar to A but has a bit more depth to it. Rich and detailed. I would certainly pick this one over the others. D. This one has better sonic quality than B but there's something about it I don't like. Breathy is the word I would describe it as. This is my least favourite.
@henrikpetersson346315 күн бұрын
Guitar: CDAB A. Again, sounds well balanced but also quite boring to be honest. I would guess this is the Twin because I recognise that sound as I've recorded so many acoustic guitars with it. B. Again a bit thin and less detailed. Lacking that low end thump in comparison to A. However, in a mix this could be just fine as one might use a high pass filter on it anyway. C. Again, it's similar to A but it's richer and has more depth. This would be my instant pick. D. I like this a lot. It's not as detailed as A and C, but it brings forward the mids in a nice way.
@henrikpetersson346315 күн бұрын
Bass: ACBD A. I really like this one. It sounds a bit compressed and tightened already. Well balanced. B. The lack of low end is really obvious here. Sounds a bit sterile. C. This has more depth and detail compared to A, but I think I still prefer A. It would depend on the track. This is a close second however. D. The mids that were so nice in the guitar really doesn't do the bass a favour here. It sounds unbalanced to me. This might actually be my least favourite. It could potentially beat B with some tweaking, but as it is now it will take the forth place.
@henrikpetersson346315 күн бұрын
Synth: CABD A. Full and detailed. I like this one a lot. B. Lacking of details again but it sounds quite balanced to me. C. Again it sounds similar to A but much richer and with more depth. This is a clear winner to me. D. Ew! Just Ew! It just sounds unpleasant. Like there's a bit crusher on the high end and it's lacking details in the mids. This would make me want to check if there is anything wrong with the settings. The bass sounds ok however. But still, this is my least favourite.
@henrikpetersson346315 күн бұрын
Mix: CADB A. Quite warm sounding. This would be my preference for listening to music. Detailed, rich but not could be more linear for mixing. B. Woah, this sounds almost distorted? It also sounds a bit smeared and thin in comparison. C. Rich and detailed. Not as warm in the low end as A, but sound more balanced and linear. Would pick this for mixing. D. It sounds a lot better than B but still something weird in the upper mids. It's ok, but not my preference.

@RadiumRecordsHollywood13 күн бұрын
@ haha… Sure… Why don’t you make a video on how you’re measuring it with your results and post here? Your measurement methods are flawed, every one of these recordings are normalized to an exact LUFS loudness and matched. If you’re hearing something as “louder”, you’re literally hearing perceived loudness and harmonics in the recording… Which might mean that the interface you’re “perceiving” as “louder” is actually just capturing more harmonics of the fundamentals and is more detailed. 🤔
