@@andyl2726 I also have a 7 inch wrist and as I said in the video I think it works well. It is actually one of my smaller watches at 35 mm in diameter. The ladies versions drop down to around 27 mm so they will appear considerably smaller and I think the bracelets are also narrower so your looking at quite a reduced footprint on your wrist. I wouldn't personally go much smaller than 35 mm, but it's up to your personal preference. My wrists are a fairly flat 7 inches so I may have a bit more wrist real estate to play with. Cheers!

Got an original diver, it's a fantastic watch, not stunning straight away, but it grows on you. So underated as a watch brand. Very classy watches, and I thought the anchor swivel on the automatics acts as a gauge to let you know when it needs a service , because when the oils dry out the anchor doesn't move . I could be wrong but it does makes sense !!!
@watchscotch62035 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin! That's an excellent watch! Is it the one with the interior rotating bezel? I've heard that the spinning anchor logo was an indication of service interval as it was mounted on a lubricated ruby so when the oil dried out on it and the anchor stopped rotating you should assume that the oil was also dry inside the movement. I think Rado may have had a patent on this. I believe that this is no longer the case on modern Rados, although they do still have the spinning anchor on all automatic pieces, they are no longer lubricated or meant to be a service indicator. Cheers!

Thanks for posting this wonderful review of the Rado Diastar Original. In 2017, I was lucky enough to have spotted this very same watch (cuff links and all) in a vendor's web store. Needless to say I snatched it up straight away. It was in NOS condition and runs perfectly at between +7.5 and 9.5 s/d. I am happy with the purchase as this watch, just as you described in this video, represents numerous inventions that Rado had introduced into watch engineering, design and production. Firsts like the tungsten carbide case and sapphire crystal applications on a sports watch for that time period were no small feats. It is unfortunate that Rado is not well known in North America. However, I gather that Rado has been quite popular in South Asian countries like India since the '60's!
@watchscotch62035 жыл бұрын
Thanks T C! Congrats on the purchase and I'm glad you're so pleased with it. Rado is very under-appreciated in North America, such a shame as I think they have quite a lot to offer and at reasonable prices. I've also heard that they are much more popular in Asia. It's interesting how some brands do much better in some markets than in others. It would be cool to see a map of global sales across watch brands, difficult to get that data I guess and also so many watches are moving around on the grey market that it would be difficult to track sales or where the watches end up. Cheers!

Good question about the indices. I'm not sure what they are made of as this was never stated by Rado in the specs. I want to love this watch....and I love the shape....I think it is let down by the 40 hours of reserve on the ETA 2836-2 movement.
@watchscotch62034 жыл бұрын
Certainly when compared with the new offerings from Rado that have the Powermatic 80 hour movement the 40 hours does seem lacking, but when this was released in 2012 there were not many movements available in this price range with longer power reserves. The Powermatic 80, which is an evolution of the ETA 2824-2, was only introduced in 2011 so I think it may have just missed the boat for being included in this piece. I'm not sure which watch the Powermatic first appeared in although I think it was the Tissot Powermatic 80 that came out at Baselworld 2013. Also, as this is an anniversary limited piece I think it is perhaps fitting that it has the older movement, in some ways. Cheers!

@watchscotch62035 жыл бұрын
Hi WorldView! I'm not positive on this as I haven't taken the back off for a look, but I believe it is the 2836-2. That may not make much sense as this piece doesn't have a day/date, only a date. Normally you'd expect that the 2836-2 is only used when a day is also displayed versus the date only 2824-2 version. I'm not sure why Rado would do this other than a lot of their original diastar models have day/dates so they had the movements laying around or because they liked the more snappy date change of the 2836-2 over the smoother 2824-2. I'll find out at service ;-) Cheers!

@@watchscotch6203 Thanks for your prompt reply and happy new year! Your thoughts are my thoughts exactly. I should know what movement it uses since I own one but never verified that info and always assumed that it's some refined ETA 2824 under the hood. I might need to unearth the box and check the paperwork. :-) It's a wonderful little watch; my only complaint is that there is no manual-wind option which is very annoying when you pick up the watch after a while and are forced to shake it for a good couple of minutes in order to wear it reliably.
@watchscotch62035 жыл бұрын
@@WorldView22 I just checked my paperwork and it has a Rado calibre 648 which seems to be a 2836-2. Either way it is a great watch and I'm glad you're pleased with yours. It should manual wind with the crown at 0 (all the way in) position and rotating clockwise. These movements can be quite stiff to wind, but if there is no give it might be an indication of needing a service. I only give it a couple of winds to get it ticking then let the rotor do the rest as I wear it. I think that is always the best approach for autos. Cheers!

Hi Agastya! The Rado anchor logo does rotate. This is something that Rado has been doing for a long time on their watch dials and you continue to see the rotating anchor logo on their new models. I've heard that too. Tungsten carbide, like all of the hard metal and ceramic materials that are used by many watchmakers, is incredibly hard and resistant to scratches, but if hit with enough force the material can crack. what was the MSRP on this. I like this watch. I just found one on ebay for $2500. I thought the MSRP in 2019 was around $1200. Have they really gone up in value that much or is he crazy?
@watchscotch62034 жыл бұрын
The MSRP was $1250 USD. This is a limited edition so they have become somewhat hard to find. You can still buy similar new models from Rado with a max MSRP of $1750. I guess it just depends how much you want this particular piece and whether you want to wait for another to come on the market. I haven't kept track of what these have been going for of late and there don't seem to be any other examples for sale in the usual places.

@@watchscotch6203 Thx much. Seems like the new models are a bit different and don't have quite as much detail on the dial. But limited edition is limited edition. Still cool watches. Thx for the reply.

@@swright5690 You're very welcome! I think that the new models are still pretty faithful to the original or at least are a cool new interpretation. The dials aren't just as cool in my mind either, but you are still getting the hard metal case and in some cases some nice features that are not on this original (e.g. faceted sapphire, powermatic 80 movements, a larger crown - the one on the original is a quite hard to wind, screw down case back vs snap - higher water resistance, day/date display). Plus they still look superbly retro and are retro in size too! Cheers!

Whats the point of having a scratchproof body if the watch is not strong enough. I had my Diastar bezel chipped off due to small accidental impact on the wall. Its a very delicate watch
@watchscotch62035 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that sav rocks! I've not had any issues with this one. I know that "hardmetal"- tungsten carbide does have some brittle properties due to the tungsten, but I thought it was just as durable as steel or gold. Tungsten carbide can't bend like steel or gold, but I thought it would take massive pressure to break it. Ceramic has the benefit of being scratch resistant also, but it can shatter if you give it a really hard knock. What model do you have?

Hi Bastien! The Rado anchor logo does rotate! This is something that Rado has been doing for a long time on their watch dials and you continue to see the rotating anchor logo on their new models. I believe that they only use the rotating logo on watches with an automatic movement as it is meant to echo the movement's rotor that winds the watch. Cheers!

watch n scotch, are you sure theyll give, 10, to 20 % discount, even here in Saudi Arabia?
@watchscotch62034 жыл бұрын
I can't speak about Saudi Arabia, only Europe and US. It of course depends on the dealer and the make. Don't expect anything off a steel Rolex, if you can even find one! Often dealers have some room to come down on price especially if it is an older model or not high demand, but it always helps if you have a relationship with them i.e. you're a repeat customer. They will often give a discount for cash purchases vs credit card. They may be inflexible on price, but perhaps can through in an extra strap or something like that. I would say it doesn't hurt to ask as long as you are respectful and serious about the piece, i.e. ready to buy. Cheers!

does it mean, all Rado diastar are SCRATCH PROOF?
@watchscotch62034 жыл бұрын
@@jesusitorayala8214 Yes all diastars and actually most Rado watches are effectively scratch proof. The model I discuss in this video is just a re-issue of Rado's first ever watch to use tungsten carbide and be scratch proof. The rest of the diastar range are also made with tungsten carbide and so are scratch proof, unless they come into contact with a harder material, like diamond. Most of Rado's other ranges like the Ceramica, True, Integral, Hyperchrome are all made with some form of ceramic material and so can be considered to be virtually scratch proof as well. Rado is a really unique watch brand! Cheers!

What's the difference between DiaStar vs DiaMaster?
@watchscotch62034 жыл бұрын
Hi Yngvar! Great question! Apart from the obvious styling differences (DiaMaster is much more traditional in my opinion) they are made of different materials. Diastar (released in 1962) is a composite material that Rado calls Hardmetal. It's a combination of tungsten carbide (a ceramic) and a metal alloy to give exceptional hardness. The Diamaster (released more recently) is made of high-tech ceramic which is Zirconium Oxide with trace elements added for color. Both materials become incredibly hard, but not as brittle as regular ceramics. They also both take on a metallic hue, but are not really metal. Rado has put a lot of research and development into these materials and the results are super cool and pretty unique in the watch world. Cheers!

@@watchscotch6203 would you recommend the automatic vs quartz for DiaStar original? I'm leaning towards automatic. How resistant is the watch from scratches as they claim it is?
@watchscotch62034 жыл бұрын
@@yngvar2403 Auto vs quartz is difficult as there are many arguments on both sides. For a DiaStar Original I'd lean towards auto as the range is very much retro and I feel that autos are going to give you the complete experience of the retro (aesthetics and movement). That's why I went with this piece. The scratch resistance is pretty amazing. I've had this one for 4-5 years and have no scratches. It's common to find vintage DiaStars from the 60s and 70s that still look shiny new. Cheers!
@yngvar24034 жыл бұрын
@@watchscotch6203Cool. Thanks! I find there's so much critique with luxury watches. Anything quartz is considered non luxury. I am leaning on automatic as I already have a new quartz watch.
@watchscotch62034 жыл бұрын
@@yngvar2403 You're welcome! There are a lot of very fixed opinions in the watch world, but ultimately you go with whatever makes you happy. I think quartz is great and there are certainly times when it fits the piece better, other times I feel auto works well. I think it depends on the piece, considerations of history, and the intended use. There is of course no doubt that there is a lot of craftsmanship in an auto movement and a certain amount of fascination that results from that, especially in our modern digital world, but it is also true that quartz is an incredible technical achievement and has its own great history. Quartz pieces can also be high-end and I feel that the level of finishing, quality, and perhaps history are the real determinants of luxury.
