I won a case of beer betting on that youngster from Basel winning the tournament. I remember when I told the guy I bet, the name of my pick. He replied "Roger Federer??? Who the hell is that?" I said, I dunno, I read in the paper he was good on grass and has a great forehand.

Only 3 years after this he will play his first Wimbledon final. Only 5 years after this he will win his first Wimbledon title. 15 years after this he will play a iconic Wimbledon SF against Djokovic. 16 years after this he will play a iconic Wimbledon SF against Federer. 19 years after this he will play his last Wimbledon match beating Fritz in a 5th set TB. For those curious, Nadal had only just turned 17 here, was already ranked 76 in the world, had beated Moya on clay in his previous tournament (who had won the french open several years prior) & had been in multiple futures or challengers finals and won one. Calling Nadal a prodigy was an understatement

honestly, over 20 years he didn't change that much. his forehand/serve preparations became a bit different, but i think what he changed the most, and for the best, was addressing his play style and playing a few meters behind the baseline, also when he is returning

Sampras had technically signed up for Wimby 2003.......but realised that he was way out of shape and form to make an eventual appearance and finally withdrew as the 2003 tournament began. Of the big 3 of the last 25 year generation(Fed,Rafa and Djoko).....only Fed got the chance to pit his skills against a true grass court player-Sampras. By 2003....the other elite serve and volleyers -Edberg,Mac and Becker..... were long gone.....paving the way for fluff like Hewiit(who Becker beat in his penultimate match in 1999),Phillipoussis(who lost to Edberg at the Ozzie in 1995) and Roddick(who lost to Sampras at the US Open in 2002)....to offer the opposition for Fed and co for the rest of the 00s at Wimby.

The Snooty English commentator saying cheeky things like he could do better and being quite dismissive of young Rafa … BBC better at picking commentators and pundits who don’t seem so overtly stuck up nowadays … nice lack of commercialisation around the court and the kit . A more innocent time. The shorts pulling, the passion and the grunting are all present this early from Rafa but his preparation into the serve is very different - the short way up to the power position … 🎾
