Martian Manhunter has telepathic abilities in case you didn’t know. He was trying to telepathically contact Superman at the time to get help so he could escape but it was coming through as a series of psychic shockwaves since he was under stress and the machine he was imprisoned in was hindering his powers. The psychic shockwaves caused by Martian Manhunters attempts to contact him were what was causing Superman to have seizures.

Superman has to hold his breath. He can hold a large amount for a ridiculous amount of time but eventually he does need air. Masks help him speak and breathe. Technically he can drown it would just take a long time if he has time to catch a breath and you’d have to hold him there.
