Rage 2 might not be the most inspiring or original video game released this year, but it at least provides some good old fashioned wholesome fun. As long as your idea of "fun" equals "violence"

@@21Kiloton Yeah I wonder if the game turned out this way because the combat is IDs strength. So naturally everything else came off as just alright or occasionally annoying (like the menus and the annoying chest hunt in outposts). Maybe with a bit more practice they'll be able to iron that out and make something that truly shines. I also believe Comments and ratings help get the youtube algorithm working to show your videos to more people. Gotta comment something! Unless its first :p

Many, many moons ago on a school trip to France I watched the movie Mad Max 2, it was an incredible experience for a young mind and I have a lot of love for it still. Unfortunately it has to be said it set the template for what post apocalyptic movies/games/books would be mass produced as for the next 40 fucking years.Whenever I see a game like Rage 2 my heart sinks and my soul dies a little, it's all so fucking generic ain't it, as dated as Fallout 3 and NV are oh how I miss the karma system. Something simple that lifts a game above the copy and paste wasteland/gangs/armoured car shite that most of these games are.This looks like it could be fun for a few hours until you finally realise it's just another murderthon set in a landscape you've seen a hundred times before.I may even play it eventually, when it's on sale. Or the free game on PSN.

It didnt really blow me away on any level yet somehow delivered a solid game for a decent price. There were also some random scenes that were so hysterically strange and creative that I think it deserves a bit of credit. Writing this now, I just remembered an interview with a video game story writer, and she was talking about how sadly, a lot of the time the story writers get called in when a game is basically nearly finished. I think this might be what happened here. Good game design, good imaginative writers, but complete disconnect between the two agendas. Thank you for watching mate. You are in the zone, shooting, jumping, tossing grenades, things are fun and after all the carnage is done (or sometimes, the worst sin, DURING) you realize you didn't get the memory log, notebook page, whatever crap these developers put to add """"content"""". Sod-off, just let us enjoy your masterpiece of carnage! One question though: Did you manage to get the dodge to work properly? The problem with this game?...the open world is too big, doesn't have enough shit in it and the enemy outposts or bases are too small and there aren't enough of them...the vehicles and car combat isn't as "fun" or as polished as the FPS parts and there's just not enough of either...the action always feels like it's over just as it's getting good. When it's going full tilt and doing it's thing long enough for you get in the groove the gameplay is great...but it rarely keeps up the pace...always stopping and starting with way too much tedious boring and monotonous downtime, travelling from waypoint to waypoint and wondering around settlements that don't have any characters with interesting dialogue that world builds or reveals compelling stories and optional side quest content. They probably should have either dropped the vehicles entirely and made the open world much smaller...basically made it a slightly more open and less linear DOOM...or alternatively they should've cranked everything to eleven...vehicle combat needed to feel like twisted metal and should've been almost constant, ploughing through roadblocks, chasing or running from convoys with aircraft raining down missiles and gunfire etc but maybe the engine and current generation of hardware just can't cope with that battlefield level of anarchy, chaos and destruction spread across such a large open world...the enemy outposts and bases needed to be far bigger intricate and way more populated with enemies to turn to sticky red paste...again this might be too much for the games engine and hardware but the game doesn't even bother to use basic old tricks like having respawning enemies, alarms that call reinforcements or even make use of some wave based hoard mechanic...so even on the higher difficulties you just "rip and tear" through enemies too fast but unlike with doom where there's always more demons to brutalize just in the next room or down a corridor...well in rage 2 you've got to get back in ya vehicle and uneventfully travel somewhere else to find more enemies to kill...and it's not just the open world either...the main "story" missions themselves seem devoid of the enemy numbers the gameplay really requires...endless empty rooms and corridors that feel like they should be crammed wall to wall with enemies.

It took me well over 20 hours in game to clear the map, or so I thought since after finishing the main quest and now just driving around I keep finding new bases to clear. And I completely agree, 1 to 2 hours max per session is just fine. The combat is tight and fun and the world is interesting enough. I got my money's worth and had fun and nowadays that's enough for me to recommend a game. 7 out of 10

100% Agreed. I feel that the first RAGE should have been used as more of an inspiration for the overall design of RAGE 2 plus the changes that were made to the combat and the size of the game world. Overall, I'm satisfied with the second game, but I do hope that the franchise gets put to rest after the DLC cycle is complete. It's just not good enough to become a staple and ID Software needs to focus their efforts to another, much more successful and beloved franchise.

For some reason Rage 2, does feel a little bit like a corridor shooter, where you have to drive to the corridors. Maybe its a failure too commit to one strategy or the other. @@21Kiloton Lets compare to AC:Odyssey. That was a great game. But the biggest flaw was that the world was too damn big. They have lots of things happening everywhere. But it takes a damn long time to get to anywhere. That game would have been much better if they had the same amount of content in a smaller world. Then compare to the latest Farcry. I mean just stand in a road somewhere and you can create a huge parking lot of dead enemy vehicles as they never stop coming. Then compare to metro series. Generally in metro if you go exploring you can be pretty certain you will find something. So exploring always felt rewarding. Rage 2 does not really get any type of balance between these different models. The world serves as "use to get to a location" instead of being something interesting in and of itself. Even compare against the Witcher 3 world. That world was interesting in and of itself, with a lot of varied locations, enemies, things to find, locations to capture and that does not include any of the mission content.

Was hoping this would be a fun open world version of doom, but it's not even close to as good as Doom 2016 lol. The only thing they seemed to have put any effort into the game was the gunplay and that's thanks to ID, not the devs who actually made the rest of the game.

@21Kiloton Your lucky it looks playable on PC i can tell by the lack of straight line running your not forced to do because on PS4 console theres no deadspot calibration option & its a mile wide, im talking a hole new level of linearity here no amount of max sensitivity or aim assist can solve just make it worse lol. Who let the intern loose on the port, no that DS4 is not a but plug or a boomerang. Not optimised & only 2 patches since launch (Ide imagine its similar to launching HMS titanic with no rudder then setting it north full power hoping the fuel lasts the ice melts & someone builds the rudder before its sunk lol) pathetic launch for console mad max vehicles controled better & i get stick drift in them on the camera, no joke they have a super tight dead spot lol. "Mediocre!" i cry. Or "Cruxifiction party line on the left 1 cross each". Days gone has had 10 patches in about the same time frame! You would have thought bethesda would be ontop of this s**t since Fallout76 & Borderlands 3 round the corner for damage limitation, but no! Heres the proof of the rabit holes depth just drop a grenade in it & seal it up, as bugs bunny would say thats all folks! Translated stick that in your pipe & smoke it. I know lets apply Minimum viable product mandates to the controls sell them in a patch later lol. Rage 2 is now playable on PS4 6th patch 1.06 since 14th may launch day added a Dead spot calibration!!!!!! Yippee for sanity i can now aim & walk where I want to!!! Its like evolving off of a train track. Or they finaly fitted the steering wheel to your new car you couldnt use before or at best it had a peddle go cart steering wheel with 40mm of non responsive play at centre lol. So this tells me it launched un optimised across the board for control pads WT Absolute F**k??? Oh the dead spot calibration only fixes FPS mode not the car camera who gives a toss about that?! FPS max turn rate needs a cap option or aim acceleration slider, both would be novel (Yes thats f*****g sarcasm!)

Very glad you decided to take a stroll across the internet and come and find me. I have a great deal of respect for Upper Echelon. There are not many youtubers telling the hard truths about video games these days. AS for the monetization, KZbin tends to fuck up constantly with ads dropping off vids even though they are monetized. Ive had runs lasting several days with ZERO ad revenue. Its youtube so you have no recourse or a refund. Thats why I set up the patreon. Trust me when I say, KZbins terms and conditions make Uber look like the Red Cross. I played Rage 1 when it first came out and thought it was quite good fun but not one that required a great intelligence to play. I havent tried Rage 2 as I am now programmed to be very wary of all mainstream video games. Thanks for your review; I think I wont bother buying it.
