** Spoiler Alert! This video contains potential plot spoilers **
Metro Exodus is the third instalment of the Metro series of video games. It is both a worthy successor, and advances and develops the franchise. It is a very original and unique experience. Shame you can't buy it on Steam ....
Special thanks to Jason T Barnes, Mario J. Martinez, Dean McGee, Steve, Alcoholistair, and all of my Patreon supporters. Their stoic support humbles me.

so I finished the game. some things I've noticed (no spoilers): 1. autosaving is inconsistent. for example: you approach a bandit camp, the game saves, you kill/knock out everyone, the game saves again. cool. but sometimes the game saves and then leaves you with several REALLY difficult sections to pass before it will save again. sometimes it saves when you still have to do a lot of prep-work, travel long distance, then finally approach what killed you the last time. needless to say this results in A LOT of tedious replaying of the same sections, to the point where you'll start hating parts of the game that you originally liked. this significantly soured my overall experience. 2. difficulty is inconsistent. I was playing on Ranger Hardcore, which is the highest difficulty, but I found the game to be much easier than the previous entries in the series, where I'd frequently run out of ammo, medkits, or filters. in Metro Exodus I always had plenty of ammo, so much of it in fact that I'd go all out Rambo if the enemies didn't one-hit kill me. most of the time I died from things I either didn't or couldn't see coming, not because I didn't manage my resources properly. there was one particular section that I had to replay more than a dozen times, since it had enemies coming at me in waves and there was practically no cover. in these difficulty spikes you don't feel like you failed, rather, you feel like the game cheated. 3. one weapon is made completely obsolete by the absence of crosshair in your HUD (which can't be toggled on Ranger Hardcore). 4. stealth is awful. easily the worst part of the game. it would make sense to try to sneak around if you were low on ammo, but, as I described earlier, this is usually not the case, so it's pointless. trying to go stealthy simply exposes you to more danger and potential death than there would be in an open gunfight. 5. the game is huge and has varied scenery, much more so than I expected. doesn't get stale. 6. graphics are gorgeous. nuff said. 7. non-lethal (pacifist) approach is immersion-breaking. the game gauges your 'moral alignment' by the amount of people whose lives you take or spare, but those very same people don't seem to have any reservations about killing you. I get why slaughtering entire communities would adversely affect the overall state of affairs in your own group, as well as your sanity, but I don't understand why I should feel bad about simply defending myself. some enemies act like it wouldn't be possible to reason with them, and the game acknowledges this by not presenting you with a lot of stealth options. with others the game tries to deliver a message that murder is bad. okay, but then why is there no option to surrender and talk things out? it just feels stupid to knock-out 30-something guys when you could just explain that you don't mean any harm. it took some serious effort and dedication on my part to go pacifist on some of the factions in the game. it was tedious, frustrating, and not rewarding, but I felt like the game would unfairly punish me otherwise. 8. bugs. not a lot of those. the game crashed twice during the last chapter. AI glitched out occasionally. sometimes I couldn't access my workbench and sleeping place. there was one type of enemy that I for the life of me couldn't knock out after they were alerted to my presence (which was possible to do with other enemies). 9. replayability. this game is the first if the series I feel at least somewhat compelled to play through again, mainly because of the side-quests that I missed. 10. I can describe driving a car in this game with one word: smooth. can't say the same about using the boats. 11. overall feel of the game is closer to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Fallout (aesthetically it's very similar to 4 and 76) than previous Metro games. the exception is the last chapter, which (gameplay-wise) is just one long, narrow, and completely linear corridor. it felt much closer to the original atmosphere. I was even running low on ammo and other supplies. it's also probably the only part of the game that felt genuinely unsettling, if not outright scary. when I was cornered in a room with a bunch of monsters and my rifle jammed after each shot… that was something. 12. Anna's character. it simply doesn't work. I think it's because they tried really, really hard to make her likable, but forgot to give her some believable human traits in the process. as a result she's just a walking stereotype of an imaginary anime girlfriend that fawns over you 100% of the time. it just looks stupid. she never does anything cool or interesting and is mainly there as a plot device. I think she would've been a much more compelling character if we also saw the not-so-likeable sides of her personality. also, specifics: what does she like? what does she dislike? what does she fear? what does she want? maybe set up some conflict, some disagreements, some fights - anything to offset the grayness. but 4A Games did nothing.

I dont know mate, but I honestly doubt it. Im always completely screwed for time, and re-reviewing it would require another complete playthrough on a harder setting, and another video. That is the best part of a week mate. I would love to say yes, but the reality is probably no. Maybe give me a poke 1month before it releases on steam next year and Ill rethink my position. This said, despite its flaws I think its a great game and I advised people its worth buying. So to some extent I think my work is done. I hope that is a fair answer mate

@@21Kiloton I didn't mean to say the review is incomplete. I just think there are more things worth talking about in regards to this game, not necessarily fitting into the strict format intended to inform purchasing decisions. for example, I noticed a similar trend between Metro and The Evil Within series. both of them at some point went open-world, which significantly diminished the horror aspect of the respective games. although horror is not the focus of Metro games, survival horror was an essential part of the first two, in my opinion. also, both The Evil Within 2 and Metro Exodus have a central plot-device-non-character that annoys the player. in any case, do what's best according to your judgement. I'll enjoy your content either way.

I agree, I hated being punished for defending myself against a horde of enemies who had no qualms about ending my life, and if some innocents got hurt along the way wouldn’t it be considered collateral damage? The world is in ruins, and the main concept of a world like metro is to survive. Luxuries like right and wrong or your humanity seem like hinderances when you’re trying to survive in a world that will eat you if you try to play outside of its rules. Also this is totally not me rationalizing me mercing every motherfucker with a gun because I was tired of stealth and wanted to shoot things for a change

The nearly nonexistant hand holding in this game really appealed to me. No tagging enemies and xray vision. Ammo conservation is key, its not laying around everywhere. There's no mini map with every enemy location marked. No GPS or glowing waypoints. No flashing items and objectives. The game doesn't pause while you dig through your pockets. You actually have to pay attention, think and plan ahead. It reminded me a lot of Half Life 2. It has that perfect mix FPS, Stealth and Horror as you said.

Gonna be honest, the woman point, with a civilization reverting back 100s of years, woman would be seen as more precious and valuable than men and would be protected as the 'woman and children first' policy. It would be unlikely but only the most determined of woman to be in any combat roles. This is displayed through the previous games, but in Exodus you aren't in the safety of the metro anymore, so woman would need to be a lot more guarded, as radiation and health issues can either endanger, or make females infertile from my understanding.

"Miller" doesn't send "Anna" on frontline combat missions. He occasionally sends her to do reconnaissance or overwatch away from being directly in the shit where she frequently, against his orders and wishes, does her own thing. She's the best sniper the Order has unfortunately for him. He makes it abundantly clear that he would prefer her to be a housewife that never left home, but she's incredibly competent at spotting assholes and shooting eyeballs.

A word on the revolver. Yes perhaps it shouldn't be quite as powerful as it is, but I believe they're doing what they can within the parameters of a video game. The 5.45 of the AK 74 (or whatever you'd like to call the hybridizations of the AK in Metro) was designed to have a fast, flat trajectory, and then penetrate. Whereas the 44 Mag is just a big fat round that knocks the fuck out of whatever it hits. It has a much less flat trajectory and much worse range than the rifles do in game and you're rarely going to use it without some form of extended barrel anyways. It's a matter of force of impact vs penetration. Balancing between those two in a video game against improvised armor and mutant hellbeasts the performance of them compared to reality is really anyone's guess.

Great video as usual. The constant blahblah of NPCs in video games is the plague to be honest. "Whoaaa! I am throwing a grenade at you!", "Fire in the hole!", "I'm coming for you!", together with the lights and all the other stuff you mentioned. I mean...come on, really? Is this how developers imagine combat situations? That was one of the actually good things in The Division 1: You could turn that shit off, which I did after like 30 minutes of gameplay. The nonstop talking is annoying the crap out of me.

Great review of the game. Played the Redux-versions a week before the release of Exodus, just to refresh my memory of the story bits. Ranger Hardcore mode is a must, just because it makes reserving ammo a thing. Also it makes you and the enemy 1-2 shot kill everything. Mutants still need that sweet headshot though, or a shotgun blast up close. Absolutely loved every second of both games, definitely one of my favorite game series to date. Midway through Exodus currently (at caspian) and loving it so far. It has it's quirks, like the animations are a bit dated, dialogue is cringy af (even in Russian audio, the obious choise) and it's seemingly going through a indentity crisis of sorts (open world/linear mix).

@21Kiloton
@21Kiloton 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I am not a fan of developers pulling concepts because they might trigger people, BUT then there are spiders. Its a really common phobia, and lots of people get it real bad. Spiders must have been much more common and much more lethal in the past because even now arachnophobia affects about 6-7% of the global population. That is some lizard-brain-evolutionary-shit right there. Putting spiders in your game is gonna turn people away (like Valheims new zone). For what its worth though, they are on the OUTSIDE of the visor, and you quickly become more focused on the things that are going to kill you in the dark, and maybe they are just mutated bugs... and not real spiders My honest advice Mike, is get a rolled up newspaper, tape it up into a club, buy a can of RAID, and set them on your desk, then buy the game. Enjoy Metro Exodus with the full knowledge that you have every weapon at your disposal to immediately annihilate any spider stupid enough to challenge you. Good luck, and happy hunting.

48:30 Metro Exodus is not really an indie game is it? They have publishers. Deep Silver(Koch Media) -> THQ Nordic AB -> wingefors .se They are just less in the popular press like EA, Activision-Blizzard, UBISOFT, etc. But their goals are the same: feed the investors/feed shareholders, break everything to do that. That's why you get multi platform game made with cut content and sub-par UI, CPU multi-threading is a joke. I fear that Cyberpunk 2077 will fail because of this too. Multi-platform non-sense. When there is known you need powerful machine to run video games. And such machine should sustain for at least 10 years. doesn't really matter what you call it PC or a CONsole. It needs to be top tier not some cut down garbage. and then having corporation claiming 60 FPS is a premium feature, and releasing games that can't even handle 60 fps on current set of consoles or selling outdated technology to consumers. Hi NVIDIA scam business.

Btw if you read that by a chance, I would like to recommend these books: Hard to Be a God Prisoners of Power / Inhabited Island Monday Begins on Saturday + Tale of the Troika (both versions) Roadside Picnic Written by Strugatsky brothers, these soviet science fiction and fantasy books are full of subtle satire of USSR, and some of them provide a nontrivial view on how the communist future might have been. Roadside Picnic being probably one of the most famous because Stalker movie and videogames were roughly based on it. But while school literature lessons almost cemented my dislike of reading, some of the books in the list I could read in one night. Because they are awesome. And there are some great backstage stories about some of these books. For example, my version of Monday begins on Saturday/Tale of the Troika is a book containing two similar but yet very different stories, first one of which is very light-hearted and second one is much more heavy and depressing in tone. IIRC this book was heavily censored and that's how the second one was born to be published in USSR. Only years later the original version got printed.

Yes & No I can't say I've read any Translated Sci Fi other than Jules Verne which I assume was originally written in French. I've heard of Solaris *and it's remake* never bothered to watch it though. So I guess that is anglocentrisism at play. So I'll agree with the assertion that it's not well know in the west. I would quite likely not even have a clue what "greats" you are speaking of & I've read Sci Fi & Fantasy from the 19th Century to current times since I was 9 years old. Russian Science Fiction has (as far as I know) slipped through the net for me too.

There should be some familiar authors or at least book titles that you may have heard even if you've not read those yourself. Russian sci-fi kinda peaked during soviet era when lot's of what one could say (especially about government) was highly regulated and censored. So in sci-fi authors could express indirect criticism about their surroundings more freely. Actually how things are nowadays has disturbing similarities of that era and not just in Russia.

Spot on, no evolution of firearm variety and customization and choice was disappointing, as was depth of crafting and survival. Bit of a shallow lake when you got into the meat of it. Game was very short as well. This was so close to being an epic game. Very unique IP, it was good, but could have been so much more. It was a one play through, as I didn’t feel anything new would be experienced a difficulty up and 6-8 more hours.

I like Exodus, for the most part. Game was obviously rushed, so there are some weird shortcuts here and there. I could simply walk off the map on several occasions(not even invisible walls). First half of the game is great, pace is great, new weapons, upgrades, enemies, story, etc. But then things get worse and worse and worse. Whole Taiga is a one big stealth mission, as both factions are technically "good". Second fight with Master was utterly moronic, considering that during first fight player cant harm him, so its pointless to waste ammo. But during second player actually has to damage him to get past that point. And not to just damage him, but let him then hit you. Librarians from previous games were one of most retarded enemies i have met in a shooter - i utterly despise tanks that one-hit you, and force player to play in one specific way. Yet they had to rename then and stick back again. And actually managed to make them even worse. Nobosibirsk is essentially Moscow MK2. If you didnt know its different city, you would never guess. It is practically identical, including Metro bit. Camps are available only in first third of the game, later on even finding workbench is extreme rarity. Whole second half of the game player also has no access to train, so no weapon swapping. Even if controls are rebind, in build and navigation menus they are still hardcoded, even tho they show new, rebinded keys as prompts, ffs. I had to actually look online on how to clean equipment, as my rebinded key did not work, even tho it prompted for it. AI "covering" resulting them being stationary for several seconds, while providing perfect line for headshot. I actually have a long laundry list of issues that this game has, from the fact that game takes half your shit when traversing from chapter to chapter(that can become serious problem later in game, as by then player may have lost literally thousands of units of scrap and oil, yet have practically nothing to go on with, as loot gets scarcer), to items clipping thru terrains, often leading to things simply becoming inaccessible. Russian influence ? Their idea of being nice to prisoners is to beat the shit out of them ? Seriously ? Gitmo anyone ? Or hundreds of other prisons and black sites that US alone operates. Pretty much every western country has such "detention facilities".

Just a note, that steam does not set any type of pricing. it is just a distribution platform. IMO competition is good. Steam has been a virtual money printing machine for gaben for far too long. Sorry to hear what is going on with them (layoffs) but I hope that they can narrow their focus a bit so that one day we may see another half-life. Metro is an interesting series, almost excruciating in the way it has to be played. Stalker has a much better power fantasy. Hopefully we see another of those before too long.
@Furzkampfbomber

Steam is taking a bigger cut from publishers/devs than Epics store, which is making using Epic more appealing to people who want to sell their games. That and the assload of money Epic payed to Deep Silver, 4As publisher. Which makes me feel even more sad for 4A. I *wanted* to play that game so much. I love the books and the games, have read the first and played the latter countless times. I even have played both games on Ranger with zero kills (when possible). Already had a physical copy pre-ordered and payed when Deep Silver and Epic pulled that bait-and-switch. And let's be honest - *now* all those publishers are crying about Valve being too creedy and how it created a monopoly, but fuck them, they've created that monopoly themselfes by jumping the Steam bandwagon as fast as they could. The DRM and all those options to sell more crap more conveniently and quickly was too appealing, wasn't it? I never wanted Steam, I hated it right from the start - but there was no way around it, so I sort of came to terms. At least I have all my games in one place. And I remember deep silver officials practically insulting their customers in the Deep Silver forums for not being too enthusiastic about Steam more than 10 years ago, explaining them how Steam is good for everyone, both publishers and customers. And *now* they play the (very well payed) victim and complain how Steam is a monopoly and practically holds publishers hostage? Ridiculous. And by the way - I am sick and tired of having to create yet another account on yet another plattform, sharing my personal information with even more companies and people I don't now. Steam, Uplay, Origin, Social Club, Battlenet, now Epic and apparently Rage 2 will only be playable with an account on Bethesdas new launcher. I am sick of it. I stick with Steam and Uplay and fuck the rest. If that means I can't play a game, then so be it.

The Metro series is one of my favorites, I still revisit the games every now and then, and make new playthroughs. I only recently just started trying a hardcore playthrough on Exodus, and needless to say it felt like being in a prison full of gay men and you're the one straight guy... So I feel the pain. I have never played any of the DLCs for Exodus, but I hace seen gameplay of them online, and sams story looks interesting. I've only read three chapters of the 2035 book which Exodus is based off of and holy crap that's a discussion in on itself. If you enjoyed the games would highly recommend reading the books, 2033 is fairly faithful to the game, 2034 is a stand alone story, and 2035, pulls some elements if last light, and tells some of the story of metro exodus and a large chunk is its own story.

Forcing you to carry a gun you can make ammo for is central to the balance, or lack thereof, of the game. You'll notice most containers and bodies don't give ammo, or filters, and even enemies won't have medkits. Unlike previous games, they're not distributing loot for you to grab as you'll need it, because they can't be sure when or if you'll need it, and they can't stop you from squandering it doing something else. Since they can't guarantee they can give you what you'll need when you need it, they have to make sure you can craft it yourself. It's not as elegant as the original games, but you can't mess up the supply distribution if you leave it to the player. It's a janky solution to a problem caused by poor game design.

Shotguns do spread out to 18-30" groups at 30 yards. A pistol like the 44 mag can deliver a single focused shot although it loses significant energy at 30 yards. They both do. I'm one of those crazy Yanks who owns guns. I used to spend my weekend firing hundreds of rounds in12 ga shotguns and reloading them evert weeknight. due to shot placement it is possible to cause more damage with the 44 mag, it's all circumstantial. Barrel size load range placement, certainly placement all count. The way videogames only do 1 shot kills with headshots is BS. The way shotguns are often worthless past 15 yards BS.

Thanks for taking the time to comment FlyBaby. I deliberately worded that carefully because whenever I mention gun calibres, I know I am opening a can of worms lols. But yeah thats why I mentioned the CQB guy who swears by them. Some combat veterans swear blind that the 20gauge is the absolute best close quarters firearm of choice. At the same time, many people consider the 20gauge to be an "introductory" shotgun for younger shooters (fair or not) ... but hence the comment about it being a "kids shotgun" But yes you are absolutely correct, and I guess that is why some soldiers who are veterans of house clearing would bet their lunch on a 20gauge: trade off a little power, for a much lighter and more controllable weapon. Thanks for taking the time to watch and to share you experience mate. For the record, I have quite a few military and law enforcement veterans who follow the channel, so every time I make a comment about firearms or calibres I patiently await a slap upside the head from someone lol.

You can loot them, but in doing so you would be leaving them with an empty mask, without ammo, unconscious on the cold surface surrounded by a wide variety of mutants aggressive enough to take more than a few well placed shots on a good day to take down. Like sure they insult you, threaten to kill you, and most of them are literally just bandits, but at the same time it's hilarious to think that the good thing to do was to reenact The Road but leave them unconscious for good measure! Really, railways are not so simple that you can just lay down rails and forget about them, and considering the brutal gigantic size of the steam engine you travel with, you should not really find any railway on the planet able to take such load after such cataclysmic events. It should be literally impossible to travel by train.

I liked this game until my train along with everything I had collected went off the tracks and into a river underwater. When I woke up with a crossbow only it was time to quit, fuck that shit why did I scavenge the land up to that point only for everything to be gone, nope.

I'm an Epic Games fan for two main reasons: free games every week and the Unreal Engine being usable for free.
