"Rally round the family with a pocket full of shells" It's referring to how politicians talk about family values while pushing the war state. Basically talking out of both sides of their mouth.

It’s bands and people like this that causes problems with their bullshit liberal messages. If liberals ever wake up they’ll realize it’s their own party that pushes this this their bulls hit agenda and policies that keep us at war with each other as well as other countries. Here we are again and the liberals are so afraid brain dead Biden will cut their cash cow out by pulling out troops out of all these bullshit liberal caused and pushed wars. Don’t take my word for it just do your own investigating and you find out liberals love and profit from wars.

When this song was released in the 90s the conservative right was pushing “family values”. So when he says rally around the family with a pocket full of shells. He’s talking about hypocritical politicians who scream family values but also advocate for loose gun control laws, and tighter police presence in the inner cities.

See I always thought "rally around the family with a pocket full of shells" was a reference to the thin blue line concept with police. Even if 1 fucks up, the rest will rally around with arms & laws to protect their own.
@EcnalKcin
@EcnalKcin 3 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it has nothing to do with police. I agree with the "rally around the family" is about politicians talking about family values, but "pocket full of shells" is probably a reference to warmongering, given the rest of the lyrics. "Bulls on parade" is a reference to a bull market which basically means prices are steadily and constantly rising over a long period of time. Altogether in context what it means is politicians preach family values while warmongering, motivated by a bullish military industrial complex.

Great first hear analysis! What I've gotten from this song is that it's talking about the military industrial complex. It talks about it's part in the prison pipeline of marginalized groups "while arms warehouses fill as quick as tha cell" but also how this complex exploits the marginalized and poor. If people had access to food, homes, shoes, and a library then there wouldn't be bullets (ie soldiers) for the US military's guns. Essentially people are kept in the dark through propaganda, miseducation (or selective education via "removing the books), and structural inequities are parts of the tools of the military industrial complex to ensure the war profits keep coming in.

Just another amazing RATM reaction! Honestly, I've probably listened to this song 1,000 times, and your analysis is the first time I've considered that the shells are a double meaning of bullets and money. The wall st bulls keep us chasing the dream so we don't question that most of our shells are going to the fund the contracts of the military bulls who are using them to buy their own shells. And like with so many rage lyrics they're somehow even more relevant now then they were when they wrote them, because the militarization of police has us even more surrounded.

I love that you're willing to try to interpret lyrics in real time. Whether or not you arrive at what the artist intended doesn't matter. The process is the product in some cases, and this is one of them. I'm so excited your listening to these, RATM had such a huge impact on me growing up. So many missed out on their message, and with all the events going on right now it hits home in a big way! One of my favorite concerts was seeing them open for Pantera. I can't even begin to describe the energy and power that radiated from them!

Guerilla Radio, Wake Up, Know Your Enemy - but _especially_ Down Rodeo. With that song more than any other, you can see the moment their lyrics hits the listener’s brain for the first time. It’s a thing of beauty.

The most powerful line from this song, "Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes , not need, just feed the war cannibal animal, I" That dangling "I" hits the hardest for me -- I don't think it's just a wrap-around syllable for the next verse, he is including himself in the list of things that get fed by the current system. I and I, from Iyaric speech, me and you and all of us are getting fed from this, but not fed with the things we need, and, it's feeding on I and I, it's eating us all alive.

i've seen several of your videos now and finally subscribed. i love the fact that you have an intelligent introspective view on the lyrics. most channels don't get past 'down rodeo' and the opening line. ratm was a favorite of mine when i was in school and i wish there was a modern-day equivalent. i learned a lot about the world that wasn't taught in the classroom and was even motivated to travel to non-tourist countries to see what the world is like first hand because of how they opened my eyes. please keep up the amazing reviews and help bring back this rebellious, questioning, provoking, inspired, and educated style of music. it doesn't have to be the same genre, but if it makes one think deeply, it's doing it's job. thank you for the reviews, i look forward to even more in the future.

Speaking of other videos, I think the lyric videos for RATM's 'Down Rodeo' and 'Killing in the Name' should definitely be checked out too. Very powerful lyrics that are still so relevant today - unfortunately.

the problem with old lyric videos like this is they leave some words out sometimes and most of the time were just people just listening to the lyrics and writing down what they hear instead of copying it from the liner notes or something

I just love how this song can be interpreted in so many ways. I've always thought that "They rally around the family, with a pocket full of shells" was, "The police gather people up, with their weapons ready to be reloaded". The song can be interpreted as a whole as, "The police are funded while people starve. They march down the streets, suppressing/destroying knowledge, and arresting people for corporate interests. They will 'rally around the family', with their weapons ready to fire". The oppression of people. The suppression of knowledge. The possible 'extinguishing' of families. All to protect the interests of the rich. I think i was 5 or 6 when i first heard it. I didnt fully understand it until years later, but it was definitely one of those first 'wake up' moments in my life, because the song is so raw and visceral that, even as a child, I knew its message was *real*. It wasnt like the backstreet boys or spice girls (no shade, I still listen to both). It was about something I couldn't grasp as a kid, and I knew I couldnt grasp it. Like 'Santa' not being real.

The Fistagon is a band symbol they used. It was a fist with a assymetric pentagon. "Rally round your family with a pocket full of shells" is about living in a police state, specifically i believe referring to many individuals in the united states living in fear of police aggression.
