Rage Against The Machine "Know Your Enemy" guitar lesson. Today we're using a Digitech Whammy DT and a Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret MKIII to capture the tone in this classic Tom Morello riff. The first key to this tune is using a guitar with either a momentary on/off switch or one with two volume controls to achieve the "killswitch" effect. This choppy sound is made even stranger when a Whammy is set to harmonize a 5th above the guitar signal. Know Your Enemy also has Tom Morello's famous crunch tone from his Marshall JMC800 so what better pedal than the Dirty Little Secret MKIII and a thick, scooped EQ. After the Whammy riff, the tempo suddenly changes and a fat combo full of power chords ensue. This RATM riff is a great example of knowing when to step back and lock into the groove of the song. Enjoy your daily guitar lesson.

Oh my God, I've finally saw the face of the voice of many pedal reviews that I've watched. I imagined him more like Solid Snake, with sharp lines, beard etc, not a curly-haired man that can be easily put in a Raffaello's painting.

hence why if you feel this is an issue you can replace one of the volume or tone knobs with a push button SPTT killswitch. You can get them at your local radio shack or if you want to have one in the style of buckethead you can get a video game push button from one of the old arcade machines.

Does anyone else feel like Morello was kind of coasting a bit in Audioslave? He's one of my favorite guitarists, but by the time Audioslave came around,those insane innovations he's so well known for were largely absent,it seems. I'm not knocking him....nor Audioslave,for that matter.....but I can't help but to wonder what happened there. Was he disillusioned? Did he not feel like those aspects of his playing were conducive to that band's sound? On the other end of the spectrum you have this song. My favorite from Rage. Insane techniques throughout. All of which are American dreams!

you're obviously pretty new (at the time of this comment) , so this stuff will come easily in time when you have more experience. in the meantime, google is your friend the numbers are guitar tabs and very easy to learn. Google it quick. he shows you how to get a killswitch effect in the video by turning one of your pickup volumes all the way down. If you still cant figure it out, google it the whammy pedal is a pedal that changes or adds to the pitch of your guitar. google that shit quick

Using a tap tempo tremolo would probably be very hard to keep up with, but possible. I've played this song more times than I care to remember (it's my favorite) and I usually just throw the gain up to full, especially in the solo. Good lesson, nice whammy pedal use, but feels like it needs just a little more power.

While I'm a huge fan of Tom Morello and techniques like the PU-selector stutter, that is one sure way to damage your electronics if you're not very careful. User beware.
@olpaxis

In this case you could because it's the same rhythm but it still gives you more human feeling because the timing is not 100%. But otherwise you can do it more rhythmically, and it that case a killswitch has more benefits.

If your using a Squire Strat, yeah, your going to damage something. But if your using quality US made parts, this will not phase it. You could do this for 8 hours straight on a Gibson Les Paul with no problems.

@robjohnson165 2 жыл бұрын
YEET, a strat is literally what TM plays. Andy is using his gibson prolly cause it has a kill switch. TM actually turn one set of pickups completely off with volume, then toggles the pickup selector. i think TM's strat is non-typical in that way. its all close enough, at least for beginner lessons.

Those switches are made to be switched man haha. You're not going to mess up any electronics. Besides, guitars are like anything else. They need occasional tune ups and if you keep your instrument in good condition you'll be fine do the kill switch effect.
