That brings back memories upgrading from a S3 Virge 325 PCI to a AGP card! Days when a top of the range card didn't require a months salary to buy, and upgrading was a giant leap! Now we live in a sterilised service based computing era with streaming rather than raw hardware power.

To be honest, current "free" CPU integrated graphics units give us much more - video decoding, basic 3D (remember myself playing Unreal Tournament 2004 1440*900 maxed out with Intel HD graphics from i5-560M CPU) and older gaming cards like 1070 still have their uses, 5+ years after introduction. During Rage128 era, new PC was useless after 2-3 years no matter how one upgraded it. And I would not call today computing sterilized, even internet browsing now is extremely toxic, impossible to use without AdBlock.

Ah, the legendary ATI Rage Fury 32 MB TVout. For a very short time around easter 1999 she was the best graphiccard you could buy and i think she was the first 32 MB card two! She was better as a Nvidia Riva TNT or a Voodoo II Banshee both with 16 MB. But After easter 1999 the Nvidia Riva TNT2 Familiy and 3DFX Voodoo 3 Family published with much more power than the Rage Fury.

Do you know if it would be possible to extract the model and textures of the Pharaoh robot from this tech demo? This was all rendered in real time as a demonstration of what the tech at the time could do, yes? I remember watching this several times on our computer as a child, and having the model and textures to play with and iterate on as an adult would be so cool!

It's hilarious watching these old tech demos that were supposed to be mind-blowing cutting edge stuff back in the day. I can't decide whether my favorite part is when it pans out over the waterfall and drops to 12 FPS or when it renders itself and has awful texture pop in between texels from the lack of trilinear filtering. "Yo, Dawg, I heard you like ATI Rage 128 Pro's, so I had your ATI Rage 128 Pro render you an ATI Rage 128 Pro!"
@philscomputerlab8 жыл бұрын
Yea it's funny seeing the card on the screen at the end.
@warrax1113 жыл бұрын
at that time, anything, that ran hi-color, and 640x480, and was 3D, with some transparency, bi linear filtering, was considered cool and new. Many people didnt have any 3d accelerator at all, in that time, and few years before, noone saw such thing. So of course, for many people it was exciting. They were playing Prince of Persia and 16 color games few years ago, with PC speaker.

@alexandernorman53374 жыл бұрын
They didn't have environmental mapping back then. But they had stencil buffers and so they faked it. You take one pass and render the normal environment (which has no reflections). Then you render the stencil part in the second pass and alpha blend the two together.

@philscomputerlab8 жыл бұрын
