Since the last one got blocked, I'll say this again. If you enjoyed this movie, you will enjoy the 90's trilogy of Gamera movies. The director has come out and named the movies that were his inspirations for making this movie and that trilogy is some of them.

I’m from Japan and I think American people might have never heard of this. Godzilla is in extreme pain. After exposed to the radiation, his body grew massive but for Godzilla it’s painful. When he uses atomic breath his mouth gets damage. He walks slow, because he can’t control himself by growing too big in weird way. For feeling extreme pain, he blames humans and go crazy.
@Mastocater-w4n3 ай бұрын
Yes, unfortunately, most of us Americans are not only ignorant of any foreign media but are also pretty media-illiterate, as most of what you pointed out could be understood just by paying attention. Also it didn't help that we dropped an atom bomb on him

Yes, if anything could be added to the movie, a scene of Godzilla in pain alone would be good to show that he is angry because what was done to him. On the island, Godzilla only reacted badly when they signaled the alarm and flashed him with a light too. I am glad Godzilla lived, even if it is bad for humanity.

Shikishima was going through lots of PTSD. Survivor's guilt, shame for not going through with his kamikaze mission...seeing a GIANT monster tearing ass on the camp. Dude didn't think he was even worthy of living, much less marriage and a child.

I love how the specific theme they play during Godzilla's attack on the city is the main theme for "Mothra vs Godzilla", a rather haunting version that incorporates Mothra's song.

Noriko is confirmed to have somehow gained g-cells after being exposed to Godzilla's breath attack. G-cells, Godzilla cells, are special as they give regeneration properties to the host. It explains why Noriko survived the blast. Like Godzilla, she has regeneration powers now. In the Godzilla monsterverse, G-cells are what helped create two other villains, spacegodzilla and biollantte.
@fettel19882 ай бұрын
IIRC, it's also the precursor to the Hedora from the second lineage. Noriko's set of wounds was a classic reference
Director Yamazaki said, ``Godzilla movies depict the reverence for nature of the Japanese people, who have lived with natural disasters, turning into a demon(TATARIGAMI), and a festival of requiem is held regularly.'' What it also has in common with Miyazaki's ``Princess Mononoke'' is the black stain. “Minus one” means that. (Even before that, Tokyo had suffered devastating damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake.) Godzilla, who is the metaphor of God and living things, is a metaphor for them, and we are constantly being overrun by nature, war, and pestilence, but we must not give up and fight back! It contains those message in this movie. “Resist and live“ In 1945, The Tokyo air raids killed approximately 100,000 people in one night. After the war, the underground passage near Ueno Station, which was destroyed by air raids, was filled with war orphans who had lost their homes and families. According to a national survey, approximately 120,000 children were orphaned such like AKIKO, and it is said that there were more than 1,000 orphans in the underground tunnels. Just FYI The fighter plane that Koichi flew in during the final mission actually exists. "J7W Shinden" The only surviving aircraft is on display at a Smithsonian institution. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyushu_J7W_Shinden

my favorite Godzilla movie so far. though Godzilla doesn't get as much screentime as it does in the hollywood adaptations, its appearances are impactful and memorable. usually, i'm bored with the human affairs in Godzilla movies because they're often mostly about investigating conspiracies and it's exhausting to follow their journey because we already know it's Godzilla. However, this movie feels fresh because it's set at a time when technology is not yet as advanced, a place recently ravaged by atomic bombs, and a nation defeated where morale was probably very low-like, how will they face this god-like monster and will they even defeat it? it's got the right amount of monster, decent CGI, interesting setting, smaller group of likeable cast, and plenty of heart. Thank you for being open to reacting to subtitled films.
@anthonyhudak93633 ай бұрын
So fun little tidbits but Godzilla has technically always had a healing factor. It’s just more often than not it's sort of tied to his durability and this is definitely the most damage I've seen him take. Also his look is definitely evocative of classic Godzilla to the point where that's not just his skin when he transforms, but it's scarring and keloid burns from the bomb. Also adds a neat little detail of why he moves very stiffly on land since his body almost locks itself in place to hold him together. At the end the black mark on Noriko's neck were confirmed to be Godzilla's cells that somehow attached to her. Probably explains how she survived in that she could've regenerated damage like Godzilla

HOLY CRAP, do I believe the Oscar hype!!!! Minus One was beautifully done and animated. I wasn't expecting Noriko to have survived, but those Godzilla cells literally saved her neck.

"Imagine you're just chillin' and like you just hear your voice from far away?" Dude, thanks for the nightmare. Godzilla started out as a purely pissed off lizard in the 1954 movie. Yeah I believe she has Godzilla's healing abilities, and/or she's gonna monster out on a short time. Oh, and at the end of the closing credits, you would've heard Godzilla's roar and *very* heavy footsteps...

* Noriko (female lead) might have been infected with G-cells (black mark on her neck) and survived the blast because of its regenerative power. * Takashi Yamazaki (director) explained that post-war Japan was at “zero” and the attack by Godzilla, Tokyo was at “minus one” - hence, Godzilla Minus One. * Amazing that Godzilla Minus One (2023) was made for under $12 million - just 1/13 of the budget of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). The American Monsterverse Godzilla is like a juicy hamburger while the recent Japanese Toho Godzilla is like a gourmet steak - both are “delicious” depending on your mood. * The latest American “MonsterVerse” Godzilla movies were full of CGI “eye candies,” and did not require me to think very hard. In licensed “monster” movies such as Godzilla vs Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), I just “kicked back” and enjoyed the CGI spectacles. More importantly, these two big-budget (over 130 million USD each) “popcorn flicks” were hugely profitable globally. This contractually restricts when and where the Japanese Toho could release or stream its Godzilla movies. * The latest Japanese “Toho” Godzilla movies were allegories of Japan’s traumas, which required me to think deeply. In Shin Godzilla (2016), the bureaucratic Japanese government failed to address the 2011 (rapidly unfolding) triple disasters of earthquake -> then tsunami -> then nuclear plant meltdown using an “evolving” Godzilla as an allegory. In Godzilla Minus One (2023), the people-led effort defeated Godzilla (temporarily) as Japan rebuilt after World War II (post-1945) with a compelling human story of “survivor guilt.” These two low-budget (under 12 million USD each) “monster” movies won numerous awards including Best Picture in Japan (both) and Godzilla Minus One won an Oscar in the US for Best Visual Effects (the first-ever for a low-budget monster movie).

In his history, in fact, Godzilla has been both the villain and the hero. The King of the Monsters has been shown to have a certain degree of compassion for humanity, seeing their flaws and potential. In these traits, he saw a species worthy of protection and fought his 15 enemies numerous times to ensure our survival.

I just realized at 26:01 that the 'surface breach' attack on the other minesweeper was the same movie Goji pulled on Ghidorah in KOTM--of course of Ghidorah stayed high, instead of skimming the ocean surface to terrorize the humans, that wouldn't have happened, but that's "G-3" for ya.

The initial conversation between Koichi and Sumiko wasn't ridiculous. Sumiko was a grieving mother, looking for someone to blame for her children all dying in the fire bombing of Tokyo. She also likely lost her husband in the war. Grief can make someone look for someone to blame, even if it isn't fair. Fortunately, she comes around quick because of Akiko. Akiko is actually the glue of this story. She gives everyone purpose.

LOL when Shikishima sees the specially made boat he'll be working on, reminds me of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars when he saw the Millenium Falcon for the first time. you can insert that same conversation here: Shikishima: "What a piece of junk!" Noda: "I know she may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts. Besides, I've made a few special modifications myself, so if we'll all get on board, we can get out of here." I know Akitsu was the boat captain and not Noda, but Noda was the one speaking more than Akitsu... so, either one

Fun reaction. Tip for future reaction to subtitled films if watching on netflix. Avoid using "English (CC)" subtitles as they are a transcription of the english dub, which isn't always as accurate a translation as the official english subtitles. It's not the end of the world but there are some minor but impactful changes to some of the best lines in the film.

Fantastic reaction. Loved this movie. Loved GxK. Both movies provided a seminal Godzilla movie experience. And that's what makes Godzilla so great as a series. You can have anti-hero Godzilla and vengeful Godzilla movies happen within a year of eachother and they BOTH worked and people enjoyed them. That is a versatile franchise. 😊

I like your reaction, but the closed caption subtitles are different from the movie english subtitles and can change the meaning of the scene considerably. In the closed captions version it reads I don't deserve this, why should I get the chance to live, whereas in the original movie subtitles he says I'm someone who wasn't supposed to live alluding to the fact that as a kamikaze pilot, his first mission should have been his last. I don't know what you are watching this on, but on Netflix in the UK there are English subtitles and English CC subtitles. the English subtitles are the original movie subtitles and although there is some mistranslation like referring to "jet fighters" I would recommend rewatching the film with the original movie subtitles.

Bruh. A little less jokes over everything and laughing in a serious movie goes a long way. Jokes have their place. Also, apparently, all but one of yall who hadn't seen it yet don't understand real science as the plan to sink Godzilla using nitrogen bubbles and then raise him so fast that all the nitrogen in his body rapidly expands in his blood is actually an extremely ingenious real world application of physics and referring to it as "the uppies & downies" and thinking the kamikaze attack will be more effective shows your ignorance, as the entire movie they have been talking about how stupid that kind of thing is. People want to watch reactions of your entertainment and enjoyment of the movie, but laughing and joking; or trying to joke; over the majority of a movie that deals with the subject matter of the mass death, war and nuclear weapons in 1940's Japan aside from all the death and destruction Godzilla causes ain't it yo, I've never seen any reactors yet who were this media-illiterate, let alone this chatty with this movie.
