Really loved the call outs to the technical people who worked on the transfer. Unsung hero’s of the market.

Indeed, this 4K U.H.D. edition of Raging Bull is a MUST-OWN title...but I would argue that Criterion's 4K U.H.D. edition of Uncut Gems is the best 4K U.H.D. from Criterion. Still, thank you for cheerleading for Physical Media and for the Criterion Collection.

Cool review, I'll be glad to pick this up sometime. Unrelated, would you consider making an intro/tutorial to physical movie collection? It's probably unnecessary for most of your audience, but as a new collector, it's been difficult to read blu-ray reviews and understand all of the technical terms. Transfers, negatives, compression, HDR, etc. is all important but present a learning curve for people who are new to this.

Random thought or question but…mostly i get rid of old blu rays and dvds as i get the 4K but interestingly, some new releases are missing old special features or are bare bones. I.e. the lord of the rings compared to the old blu ray extended set. It would be interesting to know if there are certain blu ray releases you’ve held onto yourself because those features are missing on the 4K releases. Or maybe you don’t care and it’s just us mega geeks. Haha. Anyway. Idea for future content and maybe good to know.

Yes. My favorite of the year. One of the things I am happy about is the fact that it includes the original 2.0 1980 stereo surround track. The 5.1 that was done in 2005 had too much reverb. The 2.0 is a much better mix and if you have a system that decodes the surround in a 2.0, it sounds incredible. The way I first heard it. Great review.

I recall seeing a matinee showing of Raging Bull, after traveling a good distance on my bike to the only theater near enough to check it out. I was about 15, and I worried that I would be denied entry to the showing, being R rated. So I bought a ticket to a PG film, Hardly Working, some goofy comedy vehicle for Jerry Lewis, and after getting the ticket, snuck into the the Raging Bull showing. Great experience. Such a raw, intense drama, and DeNiro's performance is phenomenal.

I haven’t bought this 4k BluRay yet but I have seen a 35mm print of the film earlier this year! From what I remember, the print looked phenomenal but there are always innate film print elements to them that are lost when transferred to home video. Can’t wait to watch this 4k!

@@robomnemonic3751 I don’t disagree! When I said “lost”, I meant to say “removed”, because you get those vertical lines and those burn like circles that pop up during a print run. My guess would be yess. I actually don’t own a PS5. However, I’ve heard rumors that PS5s are not capable of displaying Dolby Vision, which means you’d only be capable of playing the film in HDR. Also, some players are rumored to have trouble playing triple layered BD-100 discs, which most if not all Criterion 4Ks are. I’m not sure if the PS5 is one of those players.

It's SKOONMAKER. You have me sold, Jeff! I just ordered it! "Raging Bull" is a masterpiece. It deserves the accolades. I saw it when it was released, and several times afterwards. But not in the last 20 years. That all being said, in SOME ways it's reminiscent of my "Citizen Kane" experience. Great movie, wonderful, bravura filmmaking - but it left me cold! And even after repeated viewings, that hasn't changed all that much. I WANTED to be moved by the story, but it just didn't register. The protagonist is so despicable, that it was difficult to relate to him in any way. And I'm a boxing fan! Oh, and yes, I know its themes are NOT confined to boxing. My point is that it wasn't the subject matter per se that turned me off to it. Anyway, that's my honest review. But heck, I'm still ordering the damn disc, so get off my back! LOL!
