What can one say about Scorsese's masterpiece? It's one of the best studies of masculinity on film. We see Robert De Niro's finest performance (he took a 3 month break during filming so he could gain weight). Stunning cinematography by Michael Chapman (who also filmed Taxi Driver) with so many amazing images. Raging Bull is probably the finest film made in the 1980's.

Its the highest crime of the Oscars not to award this film best picture and Scorsese director.

The music score for this film is also phenomenal. Boxing scenes set to music meant more for ballet. Filmed in slow- mo the result is amazing.

Something I really love about these old siskel and ebert clips is that they look like they could have been filmed any year and yet they're talking about old, classic films. It's watching a cinephile who's only just watched something like Raging Bull.

I'm glad they mentioned Pesci's underrated performance at the end of their review.

This film and the Elephant Man are two of the best films of the year. Robert De Niro gave a Oscar Worthy performance. Which he did won. Martin Scorsese directs a brilliant film about the life of Jake La Motta and his boxing career. Should of won the Oscar for best director. Joe Pesci performance is spectacular as Jake's brother. Cathy Moriarty gives a unforgettable performance as Jake's wife. Beautifully photographed in black and white by Scorsese. The psychological complexities of Jake's life erupt into violence in and out of the ring are spectacularly filmed. What a masterpiece of filmmaking by Scorsese. One of the best films of 1980.

Watched Raging Bull the other night and although the film is masterful in it's virtuosity the film sorta drags for me when LaMotta owns a seedy night club, gets booked by the feds and then tries to find redemption through his younger brother Joey. Otherwise, a very good film by Scorsese and ppl still remember this film!

I do love their enthusiasm for Raging Bull although to be honest I think that Roger said 1980 wasn't a good year for American movies because he and Gene that year had to endure sequels, pale imitations of popular films, teen movies and even worse countless violent slasher films. It is worth mentioning that they took time off Sneak Previews during the summer of 1980. And Gene is right about De Niro because he did eventually win the Oscar for Best Actor at the 53rd Academy Awards based on his prediction.

Please bring back the low budget independent slasher movie so we can get rid of the Marvel crap that dominates the cinema today. I'm tired of the movies for morons that Hollywood churns out. I'm sure S&E would take every summer off if they were around today.
