I think what makes the Asgard/human dynamic work so well in this story is that it represents youth versus age. The Asgard understand that humans are young and inexperienced, but they also value their strength, determination, and creativity. The Asgard are old, very old, and very powerful. But they are dying, and they know it. At least Thor knew it. Thor knows that humans are the successors of their ancient allies, the Lanteans, who have in a sense passed away already. The Asgard are kinda like the great godparents of humanity. So Thor is sort of like a wise old grandfather. He know that the kids still have a lot to learn. But he also knows his own limits and when it's time to trust in the next generation.
@enlightendbel11 ай бұрын
Asgard and Lantheans are only 2 of the 4 races though and as far as we know, the Furlings and especially Nox are just perfectly fine. And there's quite a few other races that attained similar technological levels. The guys pretending to be native american spirits, the cyber beings that accidentally invaded the SGC, the species that created urdo, etc, etc Mankind had a special place for several reasons. One, because they are us, the viewer (aka plot armor), two, because they are a re-evolution of the Lantheans and three, because while the other high races are advanced, they often preferred not to interact with others, see them as lesser, etc, while humans actively look to meet everyone and make friends with everyone. Even the Gua'uld. Remember, the Gua'uld were originally not per se a bad race, just an intelligent parasite. They became so villainously evil due to overuse of the sarcophagus. Their pre-evil itteration split into them and the Tokra and the Tokra are still quite alright. What sets the 4 great races apart seems to be that they are the main intergalactic players. And Tauri quickly went from galactic players to an interaction with at least 3 different galaxies. The Goa'uld and the other high tech races never managed to break out of the Milky Way.

@tompearce54189 ай бұрын
The Asgard actually doomed themselves by attempting to prolong their own lives through cloning, resulting in mass sterility across their population. The Nox are just as old as a civilisation but continue to have children. Thor and others of his kind seem to have adopted humanity (or at least the residents of the Protected Planets) as foster "children", whereas the Nox basically just want to be left alone. The Goa'uld were considered to be the dominant species of the Milky Way but were consistently defeated by alien (and human) races with superior technology. Basically their dominance was based on the sheer number of planets colonised through the Stargate System using human slaves. They were also hampered by a feudal political system prone to constant internal bickering, and reliant on technology ransacked from fallen civilisations. Realistically if the Tauri hadn't started dismantling their empire one System Lord at a time the Goa'uld would have remained at their current level for thousands of years, or at least until the Replicators arrived.

I just watched Stargate Atlantis and the Nox disappear so that enemies can't find them. Let's not forget about the Asgard personal cloaking device in season 3 episode 18 _"Shades of Grey."_ Why don't the Asguard just turn invisible to stay safe? Of attack with invisible drone ships with Meredith Rodney McKay's solar-system-destroying-bomb from Stargate Atlantis season 2 episode 6 _"Trinity."_ With collaboration between the Nox, Asguard, Tau'ri, and Atlantian cloaking tech, a truly undetectable invisibility cloak would be quite doable I think. Add that with Dr. McKay's _"McKataclysm bomb"_ any _"super threat"_ could be easily dealt with I think.
@slash2bot9 ай бұрын
My theory is that Asgard never had invisibility because their sensors are sensitive and powerful enough to even detect a cloaked vessel. And replicators started with low Lantean tech and fed on Asgard technology, so they had an equal level of tech rendering any form of cloak useless. Plus cloaked vessels lack shield protection while cloaked, making easy meals for the replicators.
