Yeah he did another sweeping generalization. The Last Of Us was massively popular because of the story. Tell Tale games like The Walking Dead were massively popular because of the story. The gameplay was basic as hell, point and click, but it was the writing that kept you engaged. It is why the game won awards. It made many viewers cry at the end. It made the voice actors themselves cry at the end. They were actually crying when they spoke their lines in the end. This Josh guy is clueless.

A few questions: For the sake of the argument, let's say he's right that people game just to satisfy their "murder itch." Does it not then logically follow that video games prevent gamers from satisfying their murder itch elsewhere, say, in the real world? Would it not be better to "murder" some animated polygons that are being manipulated by AI or other people with a need to murder, in an environment that has no mortal consequences in reality? Or is it possible that the premise is flawed, and really this editor is projecting his dark shadow on others to avoid admitting that he has a dark passenger that starts to surface when he's exposed to violence? Me thinks he doth protest too much.

They targeted gamers. Gamers. We're a group of people who will sit for hours, days, even weeks on end performing some of the hardest, most mentally demanding tasks. Over, and over, and over all for nothing more than a little digital token saying we did. We'll punish our selfs doing things others would consider torture, because we think it's fun. We'll spend most if not all of our free time min maxing the stats of a fictional character all to draw out a single extra point of damage per second. Many of us have made careers out of doing just these things: slogging through the grind, all day, the same quests over and over, hundreds of times to the point where we know evety little detail such that some have attained such gamer nirvana that they can literally play these games blindfolded. Do these people have any idea how many controllers have been smashed, systems over heated, disks and carts destroyed 8n frustration? All to latter be referred to as bragging rights? These people honestly think this is a battle they can win? They take our media? We're already building a new one without them. They take our devs? Gamers aren't shy about throwing their money else where, or even making the games our selves. They think calling us racist, mysoginistic, rape apologists is going to change us? We've been called worse things by prepubescent 10 year olds with a shitty head set. They picked a fight against a group that's already grown desensitized to their strategies and methods. Who enjoy the battle of attrition they've threatened us with. Who take it as a challange when they tell us we no longer matter. Our obsession with proving we can after being told we can't is so deeply ingrained from years of dealing with big brothers/sisters and friends laughing at how pathetic we used to be that proving you people wrong has become a very real need; a honed reflex. Gamers are competative, hard core, by nature. We love a challange. The worst thing you did in all of this was to challange us. You're not special, you're not original, you're not the first; this is just another boss fight.

Games like you mentioned are great examples of deep, story-based gaming. I, being the insufferable Star Wars nut that I am, will also mention Knights of the Old Republic, since those games both came at a time where a good film was relatively hard to find, and both predate anything Josh Private Last Class wants to talk about, Baldur's Gate notwithstanding. Both games tell stories far longer and deeper than anything Hollywood is putting out anymore, even the Oscar bait everyone pretends they care enough about to like. Both feature twists better than any twist since Sixth Sense. The first is one of the most epic hero's tales this side of [pick a good Indiana Jones flick], and the second is one of the most cerebral pieces of media I have ever seen. These games came out in the 2003-2004 malaise of Creed-era media, and you want to tell me that video games haven't surpassed film as storytelling media? Bitch, please. Josh Sargent, was it? I could expect better video game journalism from Sergeant Slaughter.

I completely agree, but game art isn't limited to just graphics. Look at the Halo 2 soundtrack with songs like Ghosts of Reach or Siege of Madrigal (yeah it was in CE but it's also in Halo 2). Those songs are art and they evoke emotions that truly make us connect and become immersed in the game.

Darth Lttl New Vegas is fantastic, the writing and humor are just wonderful. It also does perks better than fallout 3 did, and has updated game play compared to Fallout 3. The improvements aren't massive due to the fact that Bethesda gave Obsidian a very short amount of time to make the game. Also, I would highly recommend getting the dlcs, they all make up a story that you learn about piece by piece as you play them.

A RPG with a shitty gameplay will still be good if the story is pretty good (or at least good enough to forget about the gameplay) and the music is good too. for a platformer, or a fps/tps, it's the opposite, you really want to focus to the gameplay first. it really depends of the type of game you are playing.
