In his near 25 year career span, Ghantasala left a permanent legacy of his style of beautiful light music on the Telugu people for ever - which pleased both the hard core classicists and the laity who loved only light music alike. Very few light musicians are credited with this degree of universal appreciation. Other film music directors like SD Burman, Sankar Jaikishen and Ilayaraja covered a vast breadth of musical genres in their work - ranging from western classical to western pop to Indian folk genres to Indian classical. But the stupendousness of Ghantasala lies in giving a new definition to what it means to be Telugu light music - his love, penchant and command over classical music, Telugu language, accent, intonation and expression is beyond compare and he imparted them to every one of his songs and compositions. So much that, he refused opportunities in Tamil and Hindi whey they came along. His career can be divided along the time line - the 40s, the 50s, the 60s and the 70s - each epoch brought different trends in light music. His 40s singing is rooted in the Telugu drama tradition with elaborate classical ornamentation and telugu _padya_ tradition. 50s was the eras when the beauty of classical music was combined cinematic expression. 60s still continued the melody trend, but the diction and lyrics began veering towards colloquial Telugu. Late 60 and 70s is when the classicism started vanishing and music started gearing for a strong marketization - some deterioration of standards followed. In all this, Ghantasala had his own signature. His early 50s compositions in Patala Bhairavi, Chandraharam, Pelli Chesi ChooDu had a melody trend influenced by Hindustani ragas. But, he revealed his complete musical genius in two movies - more than the rest - they are Lava Kusa and Rahasyam. Both were released around 1966, when Ghantasala's career reached its last lap. Lava Kusa till date is acknowledged to be an all time musical work unparalleled. IMO, Rahasyam should have received the same acclaim - particularly for how he immortalized the Girija Kalyanam Yakshagaanam and this Hymn in praise of the goddess Lalita

Wonderful analysis Sir. Ghantasala's genius could accommodate 10k plus songs as a singer and 100 plus movies as a music director, a feat unparalleled in film music. And most of the movies were commercial or musical hits.

Full length of Rahasyam was telecast by HYD Dooradarsan in late 80s especially 1987-88 onwards . I watched it in doordarshan black and white tv in those my school days. This is masterpiece of Ghantasala as a music composer. I think it is still available at Ramantapur.

A fair attempt to relive a fantastic picturization of a great song on Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Parvathi all played by Anjali Devi (only this last part is available in the dvd) in three lokas successively wherein the apsaras and Narada sing the glory of the Goddesses. An idiotic trimming of the great parts of the film (Also Girija Kalyanam) by the video disc producer have deprived the present generations of Telugu people, of an aural and visual feast. Have been hunting for this part in vain for about 25 years. Can some one in possession of this video song upload it please?
