Winter is finally here again on the Bergen Line in Norway. It's fascinating to see how the snow line keeps creeping lowing and lower.
Did some editing on the tunnel sections to improve the visuals when driving in tunnels.

I found this movie enthralling. A journey through what must be some of the most stunning scenery on earth. I watched it in sessions because of the length. Do you know what? It's hypnotic! I kept finding myself dozing off because of the tranquility of it. No soundtrack, apart from the rumble of the train and its horn. That's all we need. The only tiny negative for me was no little snippets of information about stations along the way and telling us the length of some of the longer tunnels. A bit of text at the bottom of the screen would sort that. All said, I loved it. I have now subscribed. Thank you for posting these movies.

A superb video, and wonderfully engineered railway. I wonder when the line was constructed, and when it was electrified?
@RailCowGirl
@RailCowGirl 5 жыл бұрын
Bergen - Voss was opened in 1883as a narrow gauge. When they connected the Bergen Line to the Voss line in 1909 it was also converted to normal gauge so the trains could run seamlessly from Oslo To Bergen This was done in 1909. The electrification of the line was completed in 1963 :)
@TheRichardSpearman

Thanks; in other words this tremendously costly and impressive engineering project was completed decades before Norway enjoyed any wealth from North sea oil. It demonstrates the skill and ingenuity of the Norwegian people, prepared to invest so much in their national infrastructure. In contrast to many much more wealthy countries (at that time) who failed to invest in railways, and whose system has now been closed down, or is close to collapse.

Beautiful and atmospheric film. Particularly watching in England, where the lightest fall of snow in much less difficult terrain causes chaos to our run-for-profit railway system. As a boy I visited Norway with my family in 1956, cruising the fjords. Memories of amazing views and very friendly people. Sailing by ship, the only railway we travelled on was the Funicular line to get a glorious panorama of Bergen and as it was summer the only ice and snow we met was when we went up to visit one of the glaciers. Do you have problems with rock-falls in the many unlined tunnels? One phrase of Norwegian I recall from that visit "Tusen takk" for posting this.

Hi! You changed the switch manually. Did "The System" know that you changed it? That's a complex system. So many points of failure. A light could burn out. A switch could jam. Etc. The system needs to know things like that or very bad results could occur. I was in computers for 50 years and worked on some complicated stuff. My hat is off the the people developing that one. PS. I'm enjoying your videos !!
@RailCowGirl
@RailCowGirl 3 жыл бұрын
You saw me throw a switch manually, that's in the workshop/parking area, where you are the barrier. Outside of parking areas/workshops everything is controlled with redundant systems where all signals will be set to stop if an error occur. If a switch fails then the signal can never show clear to proceed. There are so many failsafe's involved that it's near impossible for anything to happen unless you physically go out and rewire the whole thing + reprogramming.

This is kind of a touristy question, sorry, but... do the excursion boats run up into the fjord as far as Stanghelle? It would be fun to take the train one way and a boat back!
@RailCowGirl
@RailCowGirl 3 жыл бұрын
A boat trip is a part of the Norway in a Nutshell package. The boat goes from Bergen to Flåm, but it does not go into the Fjord by Stanghelle. There is a "local service" boat that goes in the fjord towards Stanghelle etc, but it's not part of the package.

We went on the trains from Oslo S to Hønefoss then Sandvika, Drammen, Sande Sandefjord og Tonsberg. We went as far north as Ålta beautiful scenery. We paid extra for the better class but you get free coffee. Very clean trains and no feet on seats, no noisy music and you get about 6 police type ticket inspectors come through like a squad, don’t fare jump 😂 jeg elsker Norge og alle sammen, alt bra med Norge 🙏🏽

I won’t show the true speed of the train due to GPS inaccuracy. A former colleague of mine almost lost his job because he/she/they posted a video with a speed gauge, and its inaccuracy showed overspeeding at a certain point. The gps only calculates the time used between two polling points. This can lead to excessive speed if loss of signal occurs.

Beautiful scenery - between tunnels! - I notice very few people about, no cars, roads almost unused, except in the big towns. What do the yellow triangle signs, some pointing up, some down, with a low value digit on them - mean? Thanks.

Beautiful ride through a beautiful country! I was puzzled to not see any wood smoke around the homes. Mostly gas or electric heat?

Mostly electric heating, Norway uses hydropower. But many have a woodburning fireplace/stove as well.

There are way to many speed adjustment to edit this in. You can see the speed on the triangular signs pointing up and down. :) Up for increased line speed and down for reduce line speed.

The work your did on the tunnel shots is very helpful. You can tell you all get serious snow when you build an entire passing track underground.
