We used to go cross country skiing in Hallingen, and every year they offered a day trip to the Flåm Railway. But if the weather was good we wanted to ski, and if it was cloudy/foggy/snowing there didn't seem much point in a scenic train journey. So we never went. I'm glad you made it possible to see what we missed!

The British pioneered railways but Scandinavians took it a great leap further. All those tunnels and cuttings, tracks seemingly clinging to mountains with a sheer drop on one side.Many feet of snow every winter, steep tracks both up and down. My hat goes off to the talented engineers who constructed this system

Hi, I'm an engineer of railways and locomotive driver at BDZ (Bulgarian State Railways), so these views are quite familiar to me. The most impressive thing is the slope of this line - 55‰ is toooo much! We have many mountain lines with 22-28‰, even main line 4 crosses the Balkan mountain from north to south with 33‰ for 20km up then 31‰ for 30 km down, almost no straight section and 26 tunnels from which No 23 is 2100m with more than 180°. There we haul freight trains of 1600-1800t with 3 engines (2 in front and 1 at rear). Although the line speed is 65 km/h we hardly achieve 15-20. In the winter it's a real nightmare. I pray not to stop. If i skid or stop - no go. Sand doesn't help. Several times I had to get the train back about 15-20 km to reach more even section. I wonder how you cope with such a terrible slope? Of course the passenger trains are much lighter (250-300t) but on your line it's still quite a weight!
@quirquinchumisitu42112 ай бұрын
Interesting your gradients. I was looking (for fun) at the possibilities of trans-Andean rail routes and it is rare to get something like 1 in 29 (in English) or 34 per thousand (in Norwegian or Bulgarian) across the Cordillera, there are very few crossing the main ranges as easy as that. But it's good to see that it is achievable. I would guess though that 25kV OHLE is the only way to go for new alignments. Many thanks! PS do you use multiple locos on the descents? I quote Indian Railways from Golden Rock down to the coast with 5 extras just for braking power. All diesel for the moment.
@emilstrezov14452 ай бұрын
@@quirquinchumisitu4211 The braking power doesn't depend at all on the number of engines but on so-called "braking percentage" of the whole train, which in turn is the ratio of the sum of braking forces of all wagons to total weight of the train (without engine). Then, using a formula which includes the maximum gradient, length and minimum radius of curves of the section, the maximum speed is being calculated for each particular train. So, to successfully and securely serve the train on descents regardless of their steepness, just 1 (one) engine is enough. The driver controls the brakes by means of the air valve. The tales for 5 or 10 locomotives are nonsense. They are strongly needed for climbing. P.S. According to our rules the braking percentage must be 105% for fast trains, 76% for regional ones and no less than 40% for freight trains.
@quirquinchumisitu42112 ай бұрын
@@emilstrezov1445 I guess therefore the story about Indian Railways using 5 head end locos for brake power on the descent of Braganza Ghats from Castle Rock (code CLR) to the coast might be a misunderstanding or a misrepresentation. I may try to find the original post which was on facebook. The idea as described was to provide extra brake force over this extremely steep section: though it's possible that it's just a means of returning bankers back to base and saving paths on this single-track section. NB Nearly all IR is electrified now, this is one of the last on the list, "poles" as they call them are already in place.
@emilstrezov14452 ай бұрын
@@quirquinchumisitu4211 I forgot to mention that in normal braking procedure we use only train's brakes and very rarely locomotive ones in case of insufficient brake efficiency due to extremely slippery rails etc., or emergency braking is triggered. Then all the air is let out of the main air line and all the brakes engage to their maximum force.

How wonderful - a rail cowgirl. I was, at one time, a horse cowboy (southeastern Montana), and I was not nearly as precise as you as far as staying on track (which we called "trails"). You have glorious mountains, rivers, and fiords. We had rattlesnakes. We didn't have pigs but some ranches did. None were as cute as your logo-pig, although their eyes were a bit more uncrossed. You're an excellent ambassador for Norway - a beautiful and treasured place. Thanks for the great videos. Press on.
