This was the last time I was out at Rodney's, timing has just been off for me to get back out there. But, I should be good to go whenever Shane and I can get together again to go.
In this video, it takes place on the newly opened sections which includes Williams Loop. Once again, my CSX units look sorely out of place here, but I have something in the works to change that. The autoracks are again, not mine, they belong to Rodney's son. We follow the CSX through about 2/3 of the video, then we switch eras and watch a big 50s era UP manifest, followed by a Missouri Pacific passenger train.
I was out there with Shane and his grandfather Bob. Oh, and sorry for any nightmares you may get from Shane photobombing my camera. He's a dick sometimes. ^^
Oh yeah, I can finally do longer, bigger, more complex videos now. This new laptop burns through video processing, editing and rendering like it's nothing. This 12 minute video was completely finished in under two hours. My old computer, if I could get it to cooperate, it would have been about a 36 hour process. Literally a giant weight has been lifted off me. I can actually start making plans to get some real modeling done now.
Anyway, I got something special coming on Wednesday's railanning video. More from the HO club too. Thanks again Rodney for letting us come out there. Looking forward to next time.
Stay tuned, lots more to come,
Jason

Freaking sweet video, Jason! I somehow missed your last two, but I'm loving this. It's a great layout, and I love your rolling stock. N-scale is so tempting sometimes because you can do so much more with the space. Even so, I'm sticking by HO. Maybe I need to enter both worlds like you have... -Cam

Thank you Cam! I never in a million years thought I would ever do N scale, but after trying for almost a year, my buddy Shane finally convinced me. Actually, most of the rolling stock in this video is not mine, I just own the two CSX locomotives. I have about a 10 car train, but I only used the power in this one. Otherwise, most of it is Rod's. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it!

That takes up so much space! I'd love to have a massive layout too, but it wouldn't be able to interfere with walking around like that. I'd like to do one of those insanely compact coffee table layouts, or something that sticks out no farther than 1foot from the wall. What's the point of scale realism if it literally takes up an entire level of your house?

I cant believe the amount of views that my dad's layout got.. He wont admit it publicly but he designed the layout then built the house around that design... He has been working on this for most of my life and I am 30. In the last year he expanded the layout even further taking up about 80% of the entire basement.

If I remember (it's been a while) but I think he's got 3 or 4 years off and on in it so far. It's so huge it's necessitated a second level of flooring in his basement. Almost like walking through a maze.

Hi, Jason! That is a very nice N-scale layout you have going. Great work, and lots of it, too! Was it a nightmare to wire? And, how big of a room (basement) is it in?
@RailfanJason

Thanks, sadly though, this is not my layout. I was just a visitor. Not sure of the exact dimensions, but it's massive. Multi-level, around the room with central dividers and peninsulas. He's currently re-wiring the layout. So no idea what he's got going on now.

Yes, the wiring is a nightmare. The layout size is about 28 feet by 52 feet.

Hanford Brace. Several questions. How do you keep the very long train cars from being pulled off the track up front by the weight of the rear cars? How do you power the locos and are all the diesel units on each train powered? Especially the longest train with 4 units 2 As and 2 Bs? Having that much track is awesome! Is each train controlled by one person? What part of the country is this set up located. I am 78 and have an air conditioned 24 ft cargo trailer that alas I am now too old to use it. When new I did for a while use it as a carpentry shop.i think I could put a very nice N set up in it. What do you think? I am sorry to ramble but my health is going down slowly and I wonder if I will have enough time to build a set. If you can't reply to all my questions I will understand. Just let me know that you got my note and perhaps you would answer my questions for a fee?? I can try to search for stuff but I can never hit exactly my question answer and my time is?? You know what I mean.
@RailfanJason
@RailfanJason 6 жыл бұрын
I'll answer what I can, but this is not my layout, I was just a visitor. But to make cars stay on the track, people normally just add extra weight and change out plastic wheels for metal. The more free a car rolls, the better it will perform. The locos are controlled by a decoder (computer chip) that the main computer system then allows you to use. Yes, each train is controlled by a different person. The main computer system allows multiple trains to run at any given time, we just "call up" whatever locomotive(s) we want, and the system activates them for us to use. This layout is in Leavenworth, KS. Long as you don't have a lot of temperature and moisture changes, you can set up any layout where ever you think you can fit one.

Is the bridge at the beginning not straight? Or is it bent? Such a layout is what most people only dream about! The amount of work and care put into making it happen - astounding! And I see this is 2016 the film was made; how does it look now?

It's a replica of the Keddie Wye which is a literally a wye with two of it's three sides on trestles. So yes, it's curved. Unfortunately, I haven't been out there in over a year, but from what I've heard scenery still hasn't started because the owner was doing some extensive reworking of a few areas of the layout. I think he was also rewiring the entire layout too.

Nice. The Union Pacific train at 7:15 makes me wonder just how long you can make a train before you get issues. Obviously you're going to need some heavy locomotives if they are to have enough traction. If you keep adding power in front to deal with longer and longer trains, I guess the next issue will be that lighter cars directly behind the locomotives are kind of getting pulled apart, eventually causing them to derail on the inside of corners. You should be able to defer that for a while with an exponential mass distribution. Limiting friction and therefore force required to keep moving should also help (which happens to be the nature of trains). How long would the train be by then? Edit: Apparently couplers are the first problem you'll encounter in practice. Of course failures have to be mechanical in nature.
@ziiofswe
@ziiofswe 7 жыл бұрын
There are videos of huuuuge model trains here on youtube. Most I've seen where H0 though.. They solved it by putting another locomotive after a bunch of cars, and then another one, and another one... James Risner is one guy that do that kind of vids.
@EllipticGeometry
@EllipticGeometry 7 жыл бұрын
ziiofswe I ran into some of his spiral videos. Very noisy. But I was specifically interested in what you can do with engines only in front. Otherwise there are virtually no limits. What are those limits when they're in place and how far can they be stretched?
@ziiofswe
@ziiofswe 7 жыл бұрын
EllipticGeometry: Ah. Interesting thought actually. But I think the only way to get any consistent results is if all the cars are the same. With different cars, having different weight, different length, different centers of gravity, different construction (bogie or non-bogie for example) etc etc, it'll be impossible to get any consistency. But I think with a mix of cars, they will start derailing before the couplers start giving up. Depends a bit on the style of couplers too, of course. I usually tend to think in terms of older Märklin since that's the stuff I've mainly been messing with... And those couplers are fairly sturdy metal thingies that can take a lot of load as long as they aren't bent out of shape.
@EllipticGeometry
@EllipticGeometry 7 жыл бұрын
ziiofswe I have no experience with actually doing anything like this, but I have a decent sense of physics. Fact is that the front has the entire train hanging from it. That's more force running through it. More force trying to pull cars apart and make them cut corners. That's where the problems start and where you need to reinforce. The rear is just a lot of useless mass, on the other hand. You can make it lighter without causing problems, while lessening strain on the front and in turn allowing more cars to be added. That kind of distribution is also good for overall handling, by bounding inertia in the tail. People who actually tried mention couplers being problematic a lot. In theory model trains should have an inherent advantage here, but I guess perhaps because of that no real effort is put into them.
@ziiofswe
@ziiofswe 7 жыл бұрын
EllipticGeometry: Well, let's see... The force pulling forward can not get stronger than the traction of the locomotive(s). The force that keeps a car on the tracks is its weight. The forces that try to derail it is the loco pulling forward and the remaining cars "holding back"... but only in combination with a curve. The curve is the actual problem. And there are different radiuses used in MR (and also various kinds of flex tracks, to make it even more difficult). Also, the couplings' height matters. The lower it is, the less likely a derailment is. I actually can't figure out if bogie style cars would be more stable or if it doesn't matter. On one hand, the couplings themselves will be almost perfectly straight between two cars... On the other hand, I suppose you only move the pivot point to the vertical axle of the bogie...? Or is the pivot point at the wheels where they touch the tracks? Hm. When it starts tipping, it is down there... but before that? Meh, this is confusing. :P I guess the vertical axle of the bogie (the pin or whatever it might be called by someone who actually knows English) isn't really a pivot point but a lever in this context... Oh well, there's a lot of stuff to consider at least.
