As a working railroader, I simply cannot understand the fascination with foamers wearing vests. Does it make them feel like a railroader if they do? Do they think "I will wear a vest that way if a train sees me along the tracks he will know it's a guy photographing trains and he's OK." Sometimes I think they wear then so they can get the engineer to blow the horn when he sees the vest. Foamers and railfans in general...LOSE THE VESTS! It does nothing for the train crews except make us think "Who the hell is this out here? Did I miss something on my bulletins? Is this a contractor out walking along the tracks?" Leave the vests to the people who are required to wear them!
@TrucksNTrains-m6x26 күн бұрын
I agree, I sometimes watch trains and it irritates me when I see other railfans with vests. Not only is it confusing, but also corny.
@Island_Line_Rail_Productions26 күн бұрын
For sure. They look stupid for most occasions. The only times I have ever worn a vest while Railfanning where times I was also on a NARCOA motorcar excursion and I was on an active railroad. Otherwise it's just normal clothes
@michi051426 күн бұрын
Swiss railfan here, i have a vest on and i also talked with swiss train drivers and they always like, when they see railfans with vests on. You actually need a vest, when you are railfanning, and drones are not allowed anywhere near the tracks
@emily126 күн бұрын
probs just the way it is. Safety does obviously take a important precedence and while it's cringe it's also nice that people are visible. Most of the time it's probably just a weird attachment to the vest like wearing your favourite coat or pair of shoes. I see no actual harm in it. I have more problems with the coomers who run up and down platforms with cameras
@MatthewChenault25 күн бұрын
The other reason they wear them is to make themselves more visible for you so they - at the very least - think you know where they are.

as a siren fan, boyyy, there's a lot of goofballs. many people are wise, but there are tons of annoying children, but then, there are people who - care WAY too much about the shot and if one pixel is off, they get rid of the video, EVEN IF IT WAS THE ONLY VIDEO OF A SAID SIREN - literally do not bother to film anything other than your everyday 2001-130. i can understand this somewhat, and i'm not saying that model is bad, it isn't. it's just...they're kinda everywhere. if you have the oppurtunity to film something that hasn't been filmed, and you CAN CONFIRM it's active, or even just a specific siren, model, or type that hasn't been filmed much by others, then do that instead of filming your everyday next-door 130. Really, it'll be worth taking the extra "risk". Don't be afraid to try something

I'm allergic to foamers. They can ruin a good train video in an instant. I once mentioned a frac sand train on a live stream, & a foamer thought it was a political statement. So if you're reading this (The Troll who's hooked on politics) Good morning! More frac sand trains!!! LOL. This was a good video. Had me laughing on that facebook post. @@randallellison6421 My point exactly LOL.
@MrOpenGL26 күн бұрын
All my railfanning is very simple. I just take photos of interesting trains with my phone while I am at the station waiting for my train (either to get home, to go to work etc.) It's much more rewarding if I manage to snatch a photo of some cool unit or consist that way, rather than taking a car and chasing that on purpose. Most of my most beautiful shots were totally random! And usually the train crews, that have gotten used to my presence (mostly due to me commuting) are extremely friendly and always say hi from the cab when they see me taking a video.
@SynchroScore26 күн бұрын
@@randallellison6421 Because some people have to make everything into a political issue. Fracking itself can be political, whether you think it should be banned or expanded or regulated or whatever, but the railroads are just hauling the freight that they're paid to. They also haul wind turbine components, is that a political thing too?
@randallellison642126 күн бұрын
@SynchroScore I mean, yeah, like I said earlier, they literally can not help themselves. The irony of the gentleman's original comment is, I've actually assisted those unit sand trains on a number of occasions! We have one that runs on BNSF's Thayer Subdivision that originates out of a place called Sloan, Arkansas, and have been to the plant several times, it's a really cool place! If people want to get their underwear in a twist over a certain train or trains, that's their deal, I'm just here to enjoy the variety!

@victoriacyunczyk26 күн бұрын
Not sure if he went in the cab to shut it off or used the emergency button on the side, regardless he almost certainly damaged the unit. They might've had some switches in the cab on (engine run, generator field, etc). In all honesty I'd bet money that the crew was just off getting lunch.

If you railfan long enough you will see it all. All as in stupidity. Lets face it, to be a railfan you have to be a kind of nerd to begin with. I've been an active railfan since I was 10 (1970) and have run into mostly normal people railfanning but every now and then you run into that one guy. Thing of the scene in the movie Polar Express where the kid is rattling off facts about the locomotive. Yep, I've run into my share of those over the years. I feel sorry for young railfans today because there is variety anymore. I look at railfanning today as more of a photographic opportunity rather than a railfan experience. I want to get the artsy fartsy shot rather than the 3/4 wedge shot. A train can be the subject of a photo or it can be a background element. It depends on the situation and the lighting.

I'm an operating volunteer at the Illinois Railway Museum. Earlier this year, I was conductor on a caboose train on Diesel Weekend. There was a good number of people at Seeman Road, and all westbound trains were stopping to board and discharge passengers at the halt there. For reference, all locomotive-hauled trains on this railroad have the locomotive facing east (except for when we run the CNW bilevels, because commuter trains always have the locomotive facing away from Chicago). The conductor has to control the shove with a tailhose (combination brake valve and whistle) and call signals for the engineer. There is a gravel strip next to the tracks just west of Seeman Road, giving access to the turnout and signals at East Johnson. There is a gate across it to keep unauthorized vehicles from heading down that way. I've just given my flag signal to the engineer to shove west and I hop onto the steps of the caboose. Some high-school kid starts screaming and running alongside the train and cuts around the end of the gate _passing between the gate and my train._ I start panicking, thinking this little jerk is going to trip and fall against the side of the car, or even under the wheels. I lean off the steps and yell at him (I've found that I can really make some noise if motivated, with one of our steam firemen asking me to be "less terrifying" when telling people to get off the tracks). And I bellow "HEY! COOL IT!" as I roll past into Johnson Siding, and the other little jerks start laughing. There's a clip of it on KZbin somewhere or other.
