The generator is only on the Climax and the Heisler and is a steam turbine used to generate electricity for those locos electric lights. The compressor uses steam power to fill the air reservoir for the air brakes on some of the locomotives (including the Mogul). No air means no brakes. Please stop commenting that the generator and/or compressor make the locomotive more powerful. Also note that the UI doesn't sync up so even though my compressor is on it shows 0% in the UI. Thank you!

Kerbo. I saw Kan gaming playing this. The way he created straight lines for shunting yards is that he first used the 4-way intersection to keep the lines straights and deleted 2 of them and used the snapping to get the lines straight. Also keep up the good work in your videos. I found you while trying to find more railroads online

A lot of people also think the reverser and regulator at 100% means max speed, which isnt how they work. The Regulator controls steam pressure to the cylinders and the reverser aside from controlling direction, controls the inlet valve cutoff timing. Generally as you pick up speed the more you pull them back

That's how it works in the real world but in game the reverser is just a simple reverser. Maybe they will make it more realistic in the future

Quick warning on geared locos - although they are very powerful they are unbelievably slow. I only use them as banking engines pushing heavy trains up grades that are 10% or more.

when you plan on building a yard, i suggest using kan gamings video on how to use 90° crossings to build a perfectly straight and aligned yard with switches on both ends. makes a huge difference on how easy it is to operate

You can actually tow "Betsy" to another yard, just manually release the locomotive brake and it will behave like a regular car.

If you take your track up the right wall of the canyon before the "big ugly" trestle, there's a shallow ravine and a plateau which you can use to climb more gradually before crossing the canyon. That would let you avoid some of the tighter turns, as well as the "stall-out spot" where ol' Champ used to die

Yeah these locomotives are tiny in real life, the real Eureka has a cab so small that you have to duck to be in it if your over 5'6". The joys of narrow gauge!

20:06 the coupling rods are down. You should always park a heavy train with the couplin rods at the top so that the weight of them forces the wheels down thus getting the train started. That's actually a very realistic feature since in real life trains have the same problem.

That level of fidelity isn't in this game, it was just physics being weird. Maybe some day we'll have to worry about things like that as well as top dead center

I also don't think the game is that advanced that they have included the real life phenomenon in what happens there, it's called 'Qautering' . A steam locos 2 cylinders are set at a qauter stroke out of timing for balance purposes while at speed and maximum output when pulling. There is however a spot where one cylinder is in its exhaust phase and the other has only just entered its admission phase so not 100% of it's potential power is able to used to start the loco. Switching it into reverse naturally reverses the valve events and they will lurch backwards and give you a chance to try again at starting your train! If they have added that feature as part of the mechanics then damn I am impressed. But with some other things in the game no way near as intricate as that, I'd guess not lol.

You should do the car numbers like legit railcars and do FDRX for your railcars. Fedora (FD) Rail (R) And the X just means that you're the owner of the railcar.

the X is only there when the owner of the railcar does not own any track. if it is a railroad (which fedora RR is) then there should be no X at the end of its reporting mark

try disconnecting the locomotive from the train of cars, going past the junction, flipping, and backing the loco back to the hopper cars. they will be in the front, and you will be able to see everything you have, without having to go an entire trains length out of the rail yard in order go back in again and connect to the hoppers

Part of me wonders, with the rolling stock, if they're going to put cabooses/ brake vans in eventually as they were used with the older locomotives to assist in slowing down and stopping the train. 20:50 The display says your fuel and fire temperature are both 0. Coincidentally, speaking of brakes, on both passenger and freight cars there are manual brakes, as you know, but there was once a job called the brakeman who were housed in the caboose/ brake van and sometimes rode on top of those cars, no safety harnesses, no handholds, nothing to hang onto except the brake wheel and their sole job was to apply the brakes when the engineer/ driver signaled them to do so with the whistle. There are numerous instances of brakemen falling to their deaths, striking signals, tunnels, bridge beams, or being crushed by and between cars. The advent of the air brake made this position redundant but in still lives on today but is much safer. Fun fact: While known as 'Brakemen' in the US, in the UK they are known as 'Guards'.

@@KerboOnYT So you still had steam even though the firebox was empty. Also, Brakemen were also responsible for coupling and uncoupling cars, applying sand from buckets which they had to lug up from their station in the caboose, and checking to make sure no one was riding the train for free, stowaways, as it were. Read that Brakemen in Germany had it somewhat worse though, as even though they sat in 'brakeman cabs' situated on all passenger and rolling stock, these weren't heated so it wasn't uncommon in the cold European winters to find brakemen frozen to death inside their little cabs.

I don't know if you can do this in game but on an real life steam engine once you get rolling you can pull the reverser more toward the neutral position and it will go faster and use less steam

From what I've heard the locomotives are genuinely that small IRL- the character ingame is exactly 6ft, so a bit on the tall side but not excessive. Remember, narrow gauge- built to be small and cheap, if you stepped into the cooke mogul in real life you'd probably bump your head.

I like that you don't skip or fast forward from the load-out to the delivery. Getting from point A to point B was the real work of the engineer. It was a continual process of evaluating the track grade vs the total load of the train, how long it was, and the safe speed of every section of track ahead. Your commentary is probably pretty close to what would go through the engineers head. As a retired tug boat captain (with challenges not entirely different from the train engineer's), I can testify that load-out and delivery are the two most boring parts of the trip. The developer needs to include placeable track side markers that could be used to show the distance to the platform in car length.

Here is a trick: You can use 90 degrees crossrails to build straight railroad (build crossrails in between switches, replace them with actual railroad). Kan Gaming used that method to build a nice Shunt Yard. I would like to see a shunt yard in your game as well.

When you lay groundwork or track you can toggle snapping with left Alt. Put down one segment and click left Alt then any following segments you can adjust the angle. It's kind of hard to explain. There are some good videos on the Discord in the #tutorials channel

I think you can use the 90* technique to start a straight and then after placing the first track that links between them you can alt and place the next track straight too, through your temporary 90* angle guide

@@TJPlaysNow Right now the first segment of a spline doesn't snap to anything so you can't continue a straight piece of track without using tricks like the crossover or switches. Hopefully in the future we'll get more powerful track laying options

@@KerboOnYT no actually using the 90* pieces place two out then delete the middle 90* and place a track between your starting point and the back side of the 90* then snap it to the back side then hitting alt you will have a straight line from that point. Adding a few straight segments before using the x and y to curve it will make the kink that forms a little less kinky. Hope this helps making straight and nice curves!

Don't know if you knew, the stack on your loco is for eastern trains that ran coal, the western trains ran the fat stacks because they have a screen in them so they didn't start forest fires from the wood sparks. Thanks for the videos!

4 features I really hope get added, sooner rather than later 1: The option to put enable in the options an automatic timer to points (so you can for example set it to 30 then after 30 seconds points will flip back on their own to their previous position). Either that or a Derail Valley style 'look at point in distance and click to change' 2: Customisable Sign Posts you can put down so you can say where points on your server veer off to 3: Either the ability to add markers onto the map or just a red line following your track so you can see where you need to make both ends meet and whatnot 4: A bunch of predesigned curved tracks, like a model railway, with something like 5/10/15/20 degree curves Also maybe a rotation snap feature for things like junctions so the position your holding rotates between each of the 3 ends of the junction before placing down

I might try the cylinder cock next time it happens. If there is pressure in the cylinder when we stopped that is opposing the direction of travel we want it could be preventing movement.

What is the maximum incline that the mogul can climb efficiently? I've been trying to come down off a mountain at 3% grade but when I get near the bottom close to the smelter I am still really high up. I want to make it so that the mogul can turn around and come back up efficiently.

I'm not going through every comment. but the engine sometimes refusing to move can be cause you're in a dead spot at that point. Than it is a bit in reverse to get it out of that dead spot. which is quiet realistic. is nice to see you play this game.

As I built out the railroad I mostly followed the natural cuts already put into the map by the developers. As you'll see further into the series I did try other things as well, as long as they mostly satisfied my sense of realism

I am using the Heisler in the Smelter/Iron Mine valley and I don't find it to be bugged, what are others saying about it? It's a very different machine than the regular type steamers and needs to be operated slower. I guess the only buggy part I see is getting into the F mode, you can't enter it from everywhere in the cab.

Both of the geared locos can get in a state where they just slide around like on ice. I was doing some testing on another save and it can get weird. If you take your time and go slow you probably won't have too many issues but I was going ham to see what people were talking about

Press F to enter the loco UI. The hitbox can be tricky sometimes so get close to the loco. If you don't get the prompt to enter try resetting controls to default in settings

About 2 hours north of me outside Gatlinburg, Tennessee there is a small train museum and they have a geared Locomotive that was used in the mountains for logging, coolest train I've ever seen. I couldn't imagine the amount of torque that bad boy could make.

@@KerboOnYT It's a Class 110 4-6-2 Pacific Locomotive. The particular one I've seen was built and operated in the early 1900's by Baldwin Locomotive works. Run by the "Little River Logging Co." The engine being named, Little River, operated on a 100,000 acre logging tract until the state of Tennessee purchased it in 1934 to add to the Great Smokey Mountain national park. The engine continued to operate giving tours on its old rail lines up until 1954. Now it sits in Townsend, Tennessee on display with the Little River train museum. (I posted this hours ago but KZbin has been bizzare and took it down)

@@KerboOnYT definitely got stuck in the lumber at the log camp once. Be careful it lets you walk in during the animation but when the animation finishes you can’t walk in/on the lumber lol

I think the player scale might be too tall? Its 3 foot guage and if you roughly use that as a refrence to the player he is a little over 2 units of 3 feet (Its 3 feet from the middle of thr iron rail to thr other middle of the iron rail) So this conductor guy is like 6'6 to 7 foot ish
