The generator is only on the Climax and the Heisler and is a steam turbine used to generate electricity for those locos electric lights. The compressor uses steam power to fill the air reservoir for the air brakes on some of the locomotives (including the Mogul). No air means no brakes. Please stop commenting that the generator and/or compressor make the locomotive more powerful. Also note that the UI doesn't sync up so even though my compressor is on it shows 0% in the UI. Thank you!

Really enjoyed this vid. My track laying leaves a lot to be desired - very much logging line appearance - and for that reason I went straight for Heislers. Pretty good visibility from the cab especially if you lower the wood load in the bunker, second most powerful loco available, and a great articulated wheelbase. Love the look of the Climax but it’s just too slow and of course it’s not quite so powerful. Loving this game though and your vids are a great inspiration. Thank you.

3% is mountain grade. The steepest grade ever was 4.24% I believe on a now disused line. .8% to 1% is Light grade. 1% to 1.8% is heavy and anything about 1.8% is mountain. That's all for main line. Spurs that went into logging picks up and stuff sometimes hit 5%+ and that's where the geared locomotives shined.

The curves are out of this would. You really should lay out your tracks for maximum speed, avoid steep inclines, (smooth them out over longer distances) and make yards with shunting in mind. To end off, the game really needs a way to remotely operate the switches, even if it is unrealistic.

My suggestion for the remote switching is, that you can build a little telegraph station, have to enter a station somewhere and key through your path, so if you are in station 01 to station 02 and station 03 something like: "02 DE 01 SW LEFT + 03 DE 01 SW RIGHT " No, I don't want you to type, I want you to key the signal in with a morse key. That's fun! And then it's realistic, because that's the way it worked. You had an operator in a little hut, waiting for the message coming through the whole day. Going out and switching the junctions, handling the signals and giving feedback. 73 DE DL7HH

Great videos! Just curious, since I run real steam locomotives..... have you ever cut back your reverser lever to about 30 percent once rolling with a train? This should increase speed in real life, by reducing stroke travel, plus save steam / fuel. Also curious about the big Consolidation, one of my favorite locomotives......they say " no brakes", which I find had to believe. Two things. One, leave the compressor on all the time. Two, if it actually has no brakes, open the cylinder cocks, and place the reverse lever about 25-30 percent in reverse to stop. This is called "Antebellum" handling, a practice used near the turn of the century. With the cocks open, it will reduce the chance of cylinder damage, but slow the locomotive..... once again, really nice videos!
@KerboOnYT
@KerboOnYT 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. The reverser in game is just a simple reverser so none of those IRL tricks actually work. The only effect I've seen from reducing the reverser is a loss of power. Opening the cocks doesn't seem to do anything but provide a nice visual effect

Well.. Before pneumatic brakes were invented and in widespread service, that was the only way to do it. Brakemen spread out along the train together with the steam brake on the loco
@StephendeRiel
@StephendeRiel 2 жыл бұрын
As the other commenter said, using handbrakes on cars going downhill was absolutely the norm, at least for logging railroads. They'd be set at a certain amount depending on the hill and used to control speed, since very few railroads had the $ for air brakes. A couple RRs didn't even have locomotive air brakes in the early 20th century. The trainmen would climb over logs to get to the brakes which were almost under the car on most logging trucks (the type of logging car where each car is just one bogie and sets of two are connected with a log spine), which was very unsafe and often deadly. I've mostly studied Northeastern logging RRs, but I can say that air brakes were basically nonexistent on most logging operations.

Loving this railway youve designed. First time watching the channel and some pretty decent stuff fron this video alone. Although, while I dont have the game (yet) and cant confirm this, I saw someone commenting on one of Kan's videos that when yoy get your train to speed, it might help to take down the percentage on the reverser. They compared keeping the reverser at 100% like keeping your car in 1st gear. Something to test off camera maybe, and if it works let me know cuz that'll be super useful when I get the game for myself.

idk if it was ever a thing, but they should implement mechanically automatic switches, at least on the split end not the splitting end so the switches get pushed to the safe open position when a train rolls over the actuators. they could implement a train side points-pusher, which i'm pretty sure was a thing somewhere, but that deviates from the real trains so i don't think they'd be willing to implement that. also, sometimes the point of a game is to deal with inconvenience, and implementing convenience features can detract from immersion.

When it comes to pulling heavy loads, do the locomotives have wheel slip? Anyway, when starting with heavy loads, rule of thumb is to start the sander so that you have enough traction and then stop it once you get moving. Geared locomotives are known more for their tractive power and pulling strength. They were purpose built for mountainous, curvy tracks and terrain. Do not assume however that 'geared locomotive' means it has a 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear. The steam engine turns a central gear (or series of gears) which in turn rotates a drive shaft connected to all the wheels and turns all the wheels together. Hence why geared locomotives are designated 0-6-6-0, 0-8-0, 0-12-0 because all their wheels are drivers. They're not fast, max speed 40-45mph I think, but they can handle steep grades and tight turns that would derail most standard locomotives and even modern diesels and diesel-electrics. Railroad History: The famous American Engineer, Casey Jones, during his time shuttling passengers at the World's Columbian Exhibition in 1893, became enamored with one of the latest steam engines on display, the Consolidation 2-8-0 type 2 locomotive which was, to my knowledge, a heavy, and powerful, mixed goods engine capable of pulling passengers and freight. The engine he was driving when he was killed however, was a Rogers Ten-wheeler (4-6-0) number 382 nicknamed 'Ole Cannonball'. The Rogers was a similar design to the Mogul. Kinda wonder if the developers will put either one or both engines in the game at some point

Do you need to line up junctions everytime it's not your direction? IRL when you drive the other way in a junction that is not lined up your way, you basically force your way through it and the junction gets pushed open. Not healthy for modern junctions, but we have an old, small train from an old iron mine in our backyard (no joke) and i've did that several times. No problem because you just cross into the tracks. But idk if that also works in the game.

Question: Do the air brakes/compressor in the game work the same way as in real life? That is, reducing brake pressure increases brake? Couldn't tell for sure from the video. Side note, interesting how they have max pressure at 100 PSI. Most major railroads use 90 PSI brake pipe pressure today, I believe. Some narrow gauge lines (Sumpter Valley, for example) use 70 PSI.

New to the channel and I had a question about the name of your Train Company. Fedora RR. Is that a reference to the hat or the Linux or some other reason for the name? Just curious.
@KerboOnYT
@KerboOnYT 2 жыл бұрын
Short answer: it's from my logo, a brown fedora hat Long answer: The brown fedora is used as my logo. The banner image of my channel is from a mod of ArmA II called DayZ Epoch. That uniform of camo M65 jacket and brown fedora was my favorite. My dad also wore a brown fedora so it's a bit of a nod to him. So when I picked a logo for my "brand" I went with the brown fedora. Often in transportation games I'll use Fedora Freight as my company name so here we are with Fedora RR. Coincidentally I've been a Linux user since around 1995 but the fedora has nothing to do with the Red Hat or Fedora flavors. Thanks for watching
