So I had my old 00 gauge railway since I was little, and I was using the Hornby track plan for the layout I did not like it as I had the coal lift and a turntable to add to the railway. So I took all the track up and put a new layer of cork on top and started again. This new layout is one of the old Hornby layouts from the 80's (I think).

It’s good to see you testing the trains as you go along so you can fix a mistake as soon as you make it

Exactly. It made sure that there was a good electrical connection as I was pinning the track down.

When using a mains wire extension reel unwind it completely, always. I know this is elf and safety and that with low power it might not be a problem. However they can heat up wound up tight. When they go they go, with fire and a bang. Seen it happen, outside fortunately and power tools; but always completely unwind those reels.

Those cable reels have wound and unwound ratings. My 25W soldering iron is way below the wound maximum rating. It's also only a 10m cable, so the power dissipation in that length of cable with 25W passing through it is very minimal.

I realise in practise mostly it is unlikely to be a problem, however it is too easy to forget when using a higher power load so I always unwind totally. Bit of a nuisance in the loft with the model railway and no doubt I am more likely to trip over the trailing wires!!!! To be honest I am not an H&S nut, but having seen one go up in flames (and that was on a railway preservation site)it is one thing I always unwind completely.

I only found that video of James May doing it after I built it. Its a standard old Hornby layout, but I have modified it a bit.

Did you use different sized curves for the outer track and the inner track?
@MatthewThewsey
@MatthewThewsey 9 жыл бұрын
Yes. The track plan wanted 1st and 2nd radius curves, but I wanted to run very long engines. So I changed the plan to fit 3rd and 2rd. The larger radius curve goes on the out side.

how do you electrify the turntable and what software you using on the pc to make the plan
@MatthewThewsey
@MatthewThewsey 7 жыл бұрын
Software is "Hornby Virtual Railway 2". The single exit on the turntable is the main input, and it wired to the turntable itself. The other exits are powered when the turntable faces them.
@chrisadams7216
@chrisadams7216 7 жыл бұрын
How did you do it I'm looking at powering some points
@MatthewThewsey
@MatthewThewsey 7 жыл бұрын
In my case. the single exit is on an un-powered side of the track. so I ran wires under the board connecting the input to the turntable (from mainline) to the single exit. I then ran wires from the single exit to the turning part of the table.
