Happy 5 years! Wow, this is such a lovely way to commemorate it! :) Never heard the track before, but I love it. The little details like the engines' number to the lyrics aren't avoided. This is like the Woodhead theme song! Here's to more years, and less soot and cinders.

Cracking video, sir. Great to hear the original version of this song, too. Please let this become a regular series. It's puzzled me for awhile why there are so few British railway songs; Over here in America, we're silly with them, and trains have featured hugely in virtually every other form of literary art in Britain except music. A series like this would be a fantastic way to introduce this oft overlooked tradition.

here are the lyrics took me 40 min to do: Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues Well we are runnin late in a sorry state on 8215, She’s overdue on boilerwork and I can’t get her to steam, With a thousand tonnes of coal behind and the tender full of slag, Me mates sent me to Coventry and they just won’t answer by Well Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues Now across the Cab the driver sits and starein strait ahead , He hasn’t spoken to me in eighteen months since I started at the sheds, He’s drawn a line across the cab for each of us to stand, since he found I joined the NUR since he was a AZLEEF man Well Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH I fired her thin and plied it in but still she wouldn’t go When the water dropped I forced to stop on the mainline for a Blow I smashed the clinker cleaned the fire I tried every trick I know, With a rake and dart that old fart blames me for all our woes, Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues With a one in sixty climb ahead and the water out of sight, We’ll have to stop and blow her up for the second time tonight, The load comes on the engine and the start is showing green, I’m looking for the banker but no bankers to be seen just Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues Now the driver comes from Motherwell his face I can’t abide, He only know full foreward gear with the regulator wide, I can’t touch his injector and mine is short of breath, I wish balls would turn into bulldogs arm and bite the sod to death, Well Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues there all done!

According to my research, #48215 was built by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow, Scotland in August 1942 for the LMS as their #8215. She became British Railways #48215 in 1948 and stayed on the job until the old scot was withdrawn from service on July 9th, 1966. She was cut up in November 1966 at the age of 23.

@@limeddasch382 Well, it's possible that since this is the 'end of BR steam era' (48215 herself was withdrawn and scrapped in 1966), maybe some lads on a surreptitious 'shed bash' decided to give her a bit of a clean when the shed staff weren't looking?

@cedarcam Жыл бұрын
@@knuckles1206 I would not be surprised if he did. I worked with a guy who was a fireman till the end of steam and left the footplate behind. He told me of a driver like this and of how he drew a chalk line on the cab floor and kept the regulator wide open all the time using the reverser and brake to vary speed. The tender used to be empty by journeys end most of the coal blasted out of the chimney. He was a LM driver and listening to this made me wonder if it was that driver in the song.
@mcbenman17937 ай бұрын
@@cedarcamwell the events of this song occurred when Goulder was 16 years old and had just started on the footplate. The “I forced a stop on the mainline” part was that he couldn’t get steam up and ended up running out of steam. When he got back to the shed at sign off time the driver said “This fireman is terrible! Give me a real one tomorrow!” And Dave goulder was near tears. To be honest the guy sounds like an absolute nightmare to work with and especially deserved that bulldog remark

@@mcbenman1793 Thanks for the info. Some tales my workmate told me were of drivers who were unpleasant to work with others would help out a young lad, he enjoyed working with one in particular who taught him a lot. Thanks man. But if you follow the link in the description to Dave Goulder's album page, the song is actually called 'Eight Freight Blues'. The 'Late Freight Blues' version came slightly later, he recorded it for an interview in a railway documentary, and the footage showed a Black 5 as opposed to an 8F, hence the lyric change. :)
