According to what was said by UP earlier this year at an event they're hoping to bring back 844 within the next year. And imo, I really hope they bring back its signature Mars light. While it's hardly ever used 844 doesn't look the same without it imo.

Some of the footage here was used on my dvd of “Big Steam” and it does a good job of going back to the era I consider growing up in (late 2000s early 2010s). I just love that era of railfanning so much besides the 80s and 90s era. I actually love all black 844 and I personally prefer it over the white lined 844. Still, nothing can beat Greyhound and I would do anything to be in a universe where UP had 3985 in greyhound during excursion service. I’m glad that while we haven’t seen 844 since 2019, UP never retired her at all even during the end of Steam revenue trains. I would love if the UP ran excursions to the east but I’m pretty sure the closest we’ll get to that is Chicago. But it’s fine, sometimes we can’t have everything we want. Thanks for keeping her alive UP, and thanks for capturing this beauty everyone at Railway Productions.

Union Pacific 844 is a handsome and spectacular steam locomotive and a wonderful representative of UP steam power, I am glad that the Union Pacific railroad has a special heritage operation program which operates their historic locomotives. It's great that UP has restored 3 steam locomotives back to operating condition due to their special heritage program ; it's wonderful to see footage of UP 844 still in operation along with the "big boy" locomotive 4014 which was recently restored back to operation again back in 2019.

I sure hope to see 844 one day. Not only so I can see the Living Legend/the only mainline operational steam engine that has never retired from service. And while I'm not sure this might happen when the engine returns to steam in the future, I hope it's signature mars light returns as imo she doesn't look the same without it, even if it's hardly ever used.

I have to be honest with you, the bolts on the mars light were deteriorated and were beyond repair, but I have no idea that they will put the mars light back on the 844, unless they sent it to the scrap yard.
@evanf1293 Жыл бұрын
@@BME844 Those bolts can easily be replaced and besides the chances are very unlikely UP would get rid of 844. She's not only the only steam engine in North America that's never retired from running, but has also brought joy and happiness to hundreds of people who have seen her.

Good point, But like other people, I have favoritism, and I like certain things that they look like now, compared to what they used to be, and I like the 844 that has no mars light, but to be fair, people likes history, and people wants the history the same like they were during the old times. The large boxcar is a parts and tool car. As the FEF-3’s no longer are manufactured by ALCO, UP has custom forged parts for the 844, these parts are brought with the 844 while away from Cheyenne so if they snap a drive rod for example, there is a spare in the Parts Boxcar. Not all parts are brought however, some are still in Cheyenne. For example a driver; there are 8 left in Cheyenne on a sister FEF-3, the 838, which has been used a parts source for the 844 for many years. But as the parts from 838 are taken off, the steam shop will contract steel mills and companies to forge new parts as spares. These smaller parts are carried in the Parts Boxcar. The car just aft of the parts boxcar is the tool car, this car carriers everything needed to maintain the 844, things such as grease guns for the bearings, large wrenches for the driving wheel bolts, and other appliances that help the crew with repairs and maintenance. The other car behind the tool car is Howard Fogg, a boiler car/hep/dorm car. Howard Fogg serves a mobile steam boiler for the 844 when she is not under steam, for example, the 844 is overnighting in Laramie Wyoming, 844’s fire is out, and the engine is not in steam. The crew needs to grease 844’s bearings, and the grease guns are ran by steam, this is where Howard Fogg comes in. The Howard Fogg’s boiler produces steam for the grease guns so the steam crew can grease the 844’s bearings while the engine is cooling down or out of steam. A lot of the power tools used by the steam crew on the 844 are steam operated, so a Boiler Car almost always runs with the 844. The Howard Fogg also is a head end power (HEP) car, which means a onboard generator produces power for the passenger car lighting/hvac and other functions. The 844 doesn’t have a powerful dynamo to light a entire consist of passenger cars, so the Howard Fogg and other HEP cars are brought with the 844 and 4014 for power for the passenger cars themselves. Howard Fogg is a dorm car for the steam crew as well, while not busy, the crew needs to rest, Howard Fogg has a section of rooms for the steam crew to sleep in and relax in. They are strictly for steam crew personnel only. The car aft of Howard Fogg is another tool car: Lynn Nystrom. This car serves the same as the tool car. The next car after Lynn Nystrom is Reed Jackson, a concession car. Reed Jackson is Union Pacific’s rolling gift shop. At events where the 844 and 4014 are main attractions, the steam crew sells merchandise and souvenirs to help pay for the maintenance of the 844 and 4014. Some of these souvenirs are free, such as hand fans. I have a few from when 4014 visited New Orleans back in 2021. The steam crew gave the hand fans out for free as the summer heat was really bad for everyone as the 4014 was not in a shady location. Thankfully the steam crew thought ahead and brought the hand fans, those fans did a lot to cool us down. The last two cars are Heritage Fleet cars used for Office Car Specials (OCS) service, stockholder specials, and public excursions. However, riding one of the excursions is not cheap, one ticket can go for $150 for a coach car seat, and the prices increase based on seating type and event type. All of the proceeds made by the public excursions go towards the 844 and 4014’s maintenance.
