OMG! Every inch the 🌟 Movie Star! Here she is about 25 years old give or take a few, and she effortlessly carried the entire cast! She single handedly made this movie worth watching!

Can't accept that comment though I agree with you that she crushed every boundary that could have made her fade, she didn't, she was incredibly and brilliant! But no one carried Walter Huston, he was absolutely brutal to the point that he didn't seem to be an actor anymore- If I may,,, When you can let loose and scream or emotionally release in front of all the cameras, director, ect, ect- you can de-stress and be able to regroup. But, when you come in every time and have such powerful lines with no emotion, it's got to be maddening? At least that's my experience, what do you think?

@@friderckcougher97 I was an actor for ten years back in the Eighties and Nineties. I never did film or television, only theatre, so that meant eight performances every week doing the same show. Naturally enough, each performance is different, and so is the energy of the audience, so it makes every night an exciting experience. I loved every minute of it.

Hard to believe that this movie flopped at the box office and that Crawford considered it her worst picture. Not only is it among her best, she gives easily the best performance in it. She even makes mincemeat of two great actors: Walter Huston and Beulah Bondi.

It flopped more because of the subject matter. It was at a time when religion was running high in the USA, also the public wasn't ready to see Joan as a prostitute. It's a shame she didn't like it, because all and all it was a well made film.

Ive watched this 1000s of times and each time i find something new. At the end, Mrs.Davidson Says, "I understand". Im like wait, she is acknowledging Sadie was probably assaulted leading her to being of Evalay sp?. And now she switched back to her old self and Davidson kills himself...wow! To put her down the whole time and then realize her as a victim...for such a woman as Mrs. Davison thats amazing. I need to read the book but i love the happy ending even after what happened...Rain, The Apartment (Wilder), Bus Stop, The Bicycle Thief, Metropolis, It (1927) Life movies

Gloria Swanson played Sadie before, and were such big shoes to fill. It was unfairly criticized and it wasnt til much later seen fornhow great it is. The tenderness of Sadie and Handsom. The Bristish Quartemaster was also not a fan because i think hed sone a stage version with a famous actress of the time but only one name is still known to this day Joan Crawford. And the native people were happy til others interfere. Its perfect❤ thanks for posting full version.

Joan, like Bette Davis, her buddy, was another one who was beautiful when young, but that smoking pre-maturely aged them and made them look a lot older later on in life.

What's crazy, that a woman get married; she loses her identity. The ladies use their husband's name on their passport. In Puerto Rico and spanish Countries; the ladies keep their maiden( Paternal) name along with their mother's name even if they are married. In Spain, the children carry their mother's last name. When I divorced I took back my maiden name. My sister kept her last name combined with her husband's name. Which I think it cool. I guess to each it own. Everyone be safe Greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷

Watching this I was intrigued by the unfolding tension between Sadie & the missionary(Houston), and despite the talk of saving her soul I was convinced of sexual undertones . Near the end when she tells him she wants to return to S. Francisco, you see him with a look of lust on his face & he turns and enters her room

I read the plot after I watched the movie and wiki says Davidson raped Thompson before he killed himself. Did I miss that in the movie? Did anybody else come up with that as the reason he killed himself?
@jeffconquest3350
@jeffconquest3350 2 жыл бұрын
There's a definite implication that Davidson is about to enter her room after she returns to bed; though the screen has faded to being dark, you can hear the squeaking of the door as he fades into the blackness (1:26:04). And when Sadie is told the following morning that Davidson killed himself, she states, "Then I can forgive him" (1:31:51). I think the assumption that his intention of laying with her (forcibly or not) is a valid thought.

Right before he goes back to her room, he does something with his hands below the frame. I think he is unfastening his trousers... so yes, that was a big giveaway to the audience back then.
@dan5660
@dan5660 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffconquest3350 That was the implication & it took me a few seconds to pick up on it- what happened was he succombed to lust for her, after raising his head & uttering a final prayer. Then you see him with a wild look on his face and he turns his head back towards her room..

In the short story, much more was written about the interaction of the doctor and the minister. After the minister kills himself after staying all night with Sadie Thomson before her departure, the doctor goes into Sadie's room because she is again playing her phonograph loudly and he's presumably checking on her. She let's him have it, saying nen are pigs.. pigs.. all of you. So, calling out the hypocrisy of the sexually based competition yhe two had been having about her. This movie truncates so much, as many more it's will due to time constraints and adds plot devices, such as the marriage minded officer who was not in the text.
