Graham had to know he had big shoes to fill covering Dio, but he did it his way because he knew Dio was someone different, and he was now the frontman for Rainbow. It seems unfair for so many to bash him for not parroting Ronnie James, it’s apples and oranges. I think it took major guts to do songs like this or Stargazer knowing the criticism that would follow. Hats off to Graham Bonnet for being true to himself!

Graham had, has a powerful voice. He hits high notes so easily. You have to remember, Graham was never a "metal" singer prior to Rainbow. He was more into R+B. To come into a situation like this was a very big change in styles. Yet, he pulled it off very well. all you Graham dislikers out there, just listen to his work on Down To Earth. I've seen him with possibly the best Rainbow lineup ever, and he's right up there with DIO. Different styles. The hair, clothes, etc was in keeping with the trend into the 80's. It also gave a shockingly stark contrast to the nature of the band and its music, and so providing a much higher element of inteligencia and sophistication.

Someone once told Graham Bonnet not to quit his day job, and he took that to heart. He came straight from his cubicle to the show. Still an amazing performance though, fr fr.

Ronnie sounded terrible singing Ozzy songs. Sammy sounded terrible singing David Lee Roth songs. On the other hand, Bruce Dickinson sounds great singing Blaze Bayley songs and Brian Johnson sounds great singing Bon Scott songs. Some singers can pull it off, some can't. If Graham Bonnet would rein it in a bit, he wouldn't do so much damage to the song. Joe Lynn Turner did a pretty decent job because he didn't try to out-sing Dio like Graham seems to be trying to do here.

One of the most underrated hard rock vocalists of all time. Such incredible articulation overall. This was very good here but was definitely not his best. Look out though when he did his own Rainbow pieces (eg: "All Night Long", "Since You've Been Gone" or "Lost in Hollywood") its brilliant. And after Rainbow he forms Alcatraz with Yngwie... Surprised they didn't do more together. Back to 1979. Dio has parted a year earlier because Ritchie wanted to go commercial and Dio did not. OK, I can go with that. So Ritchie (probably with encouragement from bass player Roger Glover who knew talent when he saw it; producing and directing talent for - 'Nazareth' and 'Judas Priest' among others) gets Graham Bonnet, a brilliant singer who fits Ritchie's commercial bill, well almost! Now remember this is Ritchie Blackmore we are talking about. Basically (and this is more or less coming from Ritchie himself) he cans Graham after a year because Graham won't grow his hair long! As far as I'm concerned, Rainbow was never less than "Ritchie Blackmore's" Rainbow as their debut album depicted. He always wants to play God in whatever venture he is in and he didn't care about who was in or out (and there were many!). I don't care how big his reputation is, I would NEVER work with him If I were genuinely good enough to do so. He is a great player, though his tone has always been way too thin. What always shocked me was the fact that Roger Glover actually joined Rainbow in '79 after Ritchie (and ONLY) Ritchie kicked him out of Deep Purple in 1973! But Really Dio to Bonnet to - well who else would you want? Joe Lynn Turner (Bonnet's successor) was and remains a capable and respectable singer but is not in the mix with Dio and Bonnet. No chance. At this point grey skies replace Rainbow and they are done, IMO.

Who knows, maybe he`s drunk that night. Who can and is able to give that 100% every evening? Richie Blackmore is my all-time favourite guitarist, but I would say that he is in many cases quite bad in live. On the other hand nobody has made so many good rock songs than Richie. He was in key role in Purple and Rainbow.
