Offs! Finally Rituparno Ghosh . Eagerly waiting for this. "Raincoat" should be a box office failure because in India, most of the people do not watch anything other than Masala movies . Even , Satyajit Ray stated that the major portion of the audiences of India are backward audiences. I didn't want to criticize my countrymen but it is fact and obviously unfortunate. Coming to Rituparno Ghosh...For me he is a great painter instead of a great director. Few men in this globe had the ability to draw a beautiful painting with the camera , dialogue and music...he was one of them .He is amongst those film directors a film-lover should watch to witness how the language of cinema has changed in India after the Ray- era. "Raincoat " is a treat for the eyes. Rituparno made experiments with the forms of the language Brajabuli (an artificial literary language , basically Maithili , but its forms are modified to look like Bengali ) through the songs such as " Mathura nagarpati ", " Akele hum nadiya kinare " penned by him. He aimed to generate a mythological subtext of the love story of Radha-Krishna, iconic lovers, involved in adulterous love affair, who were never ‘officially’ united. Do you know that the shooting of this film completed just in 16 days ? We need to watch Rituparno Ghosh a lot. Love you "First Person" (His autobiographical writing) . Please Review "The Last Lear " , " Memories in March" , "Titli" ....

Absolutely agree...and in Memories in March they way he played with words in the songs like " Bahumanaratha" and " Kanha Sang khele holi"...its was mind-blowing...the songs were equally applicable for the lover and his colleague.

Raincoat is my favourite movie of all time. I have watched it 6 times. India was not reading to see and accept such level of cinema and direction and acting
@karantalware38253 жыл бұрын
This movie came at a time when movies like these were not accepted by the mass audience. However, it has garnered a cult following now especially for Aishwarya's performance. Kudos to Aishwarya for doing this movie at a time when she was unarguably the undisputed queen of bollywood and the most popular indian face worldwide. Most top actresses at that time were just working with big banners.
@priyankaadwani1743 жыл бұрын
Yeah Man. The 2000's really belonged to her. She was everywhere. From TV ad endorsements to magazine covers to most of my friends Nokia mobile wallpapers. The media was completely obsessed with her personal life. I remember her wedding here in mumbai. It became a national sensation and brought the city to a standstill. And I love the fact that she did shoestring budget movies like Raincoat, Chokher Bali and Provoked when no other top actress would dare touch them. The only other actress at that time who did some experimentation at that time was Kareena with Chameli.
@hellraiser15583 жыл бұрын
I put Raincoat next to Casablanca as per my taste.I agree its scope is not that big but the internal movement are as strong as that movie.And lyrics by Gulzar add another layer to the movie.Mathura nagarpati and Piya tora kaisa abhiman are 2 of my all time favorite songs.

My favorite Rituparno Ghosh movie is Khela. A feelgood movie with simple story but brilliant execution. Again " Jeevansmriti " (available on KZbin with subtitles 1080p), a docu-feature on Rabindranath Tagore is also my favorite.

The song "Mathura nagar pati kahe tum gokul jao"... It was playing at the background during the procession towards to the crematorium ( Rituparno Ghosh's cremation).... Till that day I can't listen to that particular song.... 'coz it took me a long time to accept the fact that he is no more. 😓😞

My heart is very happy that you did a Rituparno Ghosh movie at last. Not only was (s)he one of the greatest filmmakers of contemporary India, but also a pioneer in the Indian LGBTQ movement... My favourite film by Ritu da is 'Titli' starring Aparna Sen, Kankana Sensharma and Mithun Chakravarty. Ghosh excelled at portraying the delicate intricacies of the forlorn middle-class psyche, along with many other aspects.

I couldn’t help but notice how similar Aishwarya Rai looked to Radhika Apte in several frames. The same inquisitive large eyes possibly. Another movie by Rituparno that you should check out is Dosor. It’s in Bangla. I watched it at a NY film festival somewhere in the late 2000s. Remarkable story. And a blazing performance by Konkona Sensharma.

Nice review Jimmy My rating for this film is 8/10 After the golden era of Bengali cinema ruled by the iconic trio of *"Satyajit Ray-Ritwik Ghatak-Mrinal Sen"* came *Rituparno Ghosh* and became the flag bearer and made international standard Bengali films. *Rituparno Ghosh* made us Bengalis proud once again. Bollywood stars used to reject big paychecks and star-studded Bollywood movies just to work in a *Rituparno Ghosh* directed film. The great *Amitabh Bachchan* used to love and respect *Rituparno Ghosh* immensely. Jimmy you've rightly mentioned that *Aishwarya Rai Bachchan* is a beautiful lady however not many said that she is also a talented actress. Very few directors utilised her properly as an actor. Most directors used her as an eye-candy because of her beauty. *Rituparno Ghosh* along with *Mani Ratnam* and *Sanjay Leela Bhansali* brought the best out of *Aishwarya* and showed everyone her acting prowess. Sadly we lost this gem of a filmmaker and person way too early at the age of 49 on 30th May, 2013. You should watch these Bengali films of *Rituparno Ghosh* 1) Noukadubi (Amazon Prime) 2) Abohomaan (Amazon Prime) 3) Utsab (HoiChoi) 4) Titli (HoiChoi) 5) Dosar (Amazon Prime and Jio Cinema) 6) Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish (Amazon Prime and HoiChoi) 7) Chokher Bali (Amazon Prime and Disney+Hotstar)

Great review as always. The atmosphere, cinematography and score are the best things about this. But even I would rate it just above average (6-7) as there wasn't much new in the Gift of The Magi type story for people exposed to a lot of literature and international cinema, even back then. And not enough meat is exactly right, definitely more suitable for a short film, just not enough material for a full length feature which is why the film starts dragging in the second half. Rituparno's Bengali work is much stronger. PS: No link to the Thalapathy review on the channel? ;)
