I'd highly recommend adding some diagonal bracing on the dumbbell stand. There's some clear side to side movement at around 22:04, and that's with the rack not fully loaded yet, and just a light force hitting it in the most optimal direction. I fear that if you accidentally walk into it from the side with some force, it'll just bend the legs or snap the welds and come crashing down. It's not that I don't trust your welding skills, it's just a lot of weight, which can exert a lot of force. Front to back it's absolutely fine, side to side is a bit iffy. Other than that: A seriously impressive build. I first thought you were joking when you said the weights were getting powdercoated, but I get why you did it. The end result is amazing.
@rihamy2nd3 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. As much as he typically over-builds things (and I mean that in the most complimentary way), I thought that the rack, especially given the amount of weight it would be holding, looked flimsy.
@rainfallprojects5013 жыл бұрын
I had the same concerns, and was ready to add cross bracing when I was building it. In that shot when it's moving, there were only 2 legs on the ground because the angle came with a slight radius to it. With the weights on the rack and all five feet on the ground, i couldn't budge it. But I totally agree, I had the same "folding" concerns initially when I started.

When I was a kid my dad filled different size coffee cans with cement and stuck a metal pipe in them to make barbells and dumbbells

I am doing dumbbells too but I use concrete with metal bolts, nuts and old steel bearings, metal pipes and metal sheets bended into pipes and metal discs to cover the front, later mig welding. I am trying to milimize cost, your set is amazing and your workplace is good equipped, well done

I love it. I've been in the same boat and welded some hub grips out of exhaust pipe scraps and 1/4 round stock. This was like an epiphany and pretty much built my own gym out of stuff at the house.

That's awesome, dude! I love to see people building and repairing their own stuff when possible. Being self-sufficient feels good because you know you always have someone to count on 👍

That's an amazing project - everything came out amazingly well! Only thing I would miss are chrome knurled handles on the bells, but damn if they don't look amazing and it sounds like the powder coat gives you a good grip (and there's always chalk). Nice!!!

Well done mate. Very hard work and dedication. Congratulations and thanks a lot for sharing with us all. Kind regards

Did you consider going with a hexagonal shape on the plates? You could get even more out of that metal sheet
@rabajr9113 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing it was probably easier to calculate the weight to diameter increase and lay it out vs trying to match up oddball hexagonal sizes next to each other
@leefhead13 жыл бұрын
@@rabajr911 any modeling/calc software can calculate this for you automatically.
@Nevir2023 жыл бұрын
@@leefhead1 Yep, given how well we know the weight of steel, and that we are talking about a fixed thickness for each plate, all you'd need to do is solve for area. No doubt you can tell the software to draw you a hexagon with a given surface area.

The round shape looks traditional though. And you can still do your renegade rows, you just need a stronger grip.

I just want to say this is phenomenal work, definitely professional. I also want to say that I am looking into starting my own gym, and after watching this video, I would very much love the opportunity to talk with you about your want or availability to craft another set of these dumbbells, with my intent of purchasing them, and using them as my gym dumbbells. I look forward to hearing back from you, to talk more of the details if you so please. Again, exceptional work and a true talent you have.
