Funnily enough, many old tractors had smaller engines that were used solely to start the bigger engines. Those were needed as there were no electrics, and if there were electrics they were not capable of rotating the big engine. And I mean, the tractors literally had two engines installed, one to power the tractor and one dedicated to starting the tractor.

Intake valve is sticking open and ignition timing is way off.The late Mr. Vernon Griffin of Portland Tenn. would prime his with 2 rotations of the flywheel then pull it up to TDC easy by hand. After it crossed past TDC, the impulse magneto would "snap" , one of the cylinders would light and the flywheel would pull out of his hand and the engine start.
@gittyupalice964 жыл бұрын
@@Clunk49 exactly, these engines should start right up by hand. Almost always less than 4 rotations, if it takes more than that they're doing something very wrong and probably shouldn't touch it. My guess is the timing is wrong, wich can blow the cylinder clean in half.

@Rainhill18296 жыл бұрын
They are pretty simple. They used a mixer instead of a carburetor so fuel supply was as simple as opening a needle valve and adjusting it as the engine load demanded it, using the color of the exhaust smoke and engine rhythm to guide you. Starting was simply setting the fuel valve, flipping down the decompression lever, applying some choke and barring the engine over. Ignition impulse and retarding was fully automatic so no worries there. When it fired you simply let it spool up as you adjusted your fuel settings. Under a heavy load a second valve on the mixer supplied water to the fuel mix to prevent detonation. The mixer also had a third valve for kerosene fuel which was used after the engine warmed up to operating temperature, gasoline was used for starting but not running due to it's high value in those days. Engine speed was adjusted with a simple ratcheted governor override lever that acted on the centrifugal flyball speed governor. Enjoy.

@Rainhill18297 жыл бұрын
Yes since it had not ran in years and needed magneto work they thought it would be easier to do a belt start first to work the bugs out. Normally it is started by a large bar that engages teeth on the backside of the flywheel.

There is a bar to wheel over the flywheel fixed to the frame. You set the carb, opened the decomp levers and barred the engine over till it fired. it is actually quite easy.
@Motorsheep5 жыл бұрын
Are we sure those were just ignition timing issues? I mean, the only times it fired, it fired right back out of the intake. Not sure if you can advance your timing that far and still get any ignition at all. No idea how these engines are built, but that looks more like a valve timing issue to me. Or perhaps, as other people mentioned, they were even cranking it backwards?
@Rainhill18295 жыл бұрын
We were rotating it correctly, the problem was eventually traced to the magneto coupling being bolted together in the wrong phase.

Hmmm with 30 yrs of observation of old equipment trying to start. Few owners use any type of fuel supplements and or synthetic engine oil. Which BOTH will make a huge benefit in starting and overall performance.
@Rainhill18296 жыл бұрын
The problem we have with synthetics seems to be the smaller molecule tends to cause the machines to leak from every seal, gland and bearing, also the newer formulas tend to wreak havoc on certain metals that used to be used on engines but aren't anymore, such as bronze and white lead. We stick to old oil and fuel formula's just cause it tends to keep these machines operating within their original parameters.
@BeingMe236 жыл бұрын
Rainhill1829 Well the reason seals and gaskets leak is due to age not the synthetic oil. Your issue with synthetic oil damaging old metals is unfound. If you do your research synthetic oil was first invented in the 1930s in Germany. So I am sure that oil was used in engines built before 1930s. But everyone makes their own choice.
@Rainhill18296 жыл бұрын
Truth be told, I personally run the better stuff in my own equipment and am quite pleased with the results (except ethanol based fuel, screw that stuff). The museum on the other hand buys oil by the barrel because many tractors use total loss systems and most of it ends up on the ground regardless, they have standardized the main viscosities that most machines use to keep things simple. Synthetics are nice but not really worth the cost given our very limited budget.
@BeingMe236 жыл бұрын
Rainhill1829 True.. I used to recommend synthetic oil to everyone when I was younger. But synthetic is only beneficial to those whom operate in extreme hot or cold. Those whom want to there vehicle or equipment to last 10,000s hrs or 100,000s miles etc. The fuel reduction is only about 1 to 3%. This is what I have learned over my 25 yrs of research and experience.
