If that SUV was at another shop and they let it go with those fasteners loose, wow...that's crazy. Someone could have been hurt really bad if that right front suspension came apart at the wrong moment. Of all the struts assemblies you have posted vids of here, the removal was one of the easiest. Not because they left the fasteners loose, but the relative ease of it coming out once the tie rod was disconnected. Thanks for taking us along on this repair. 😊

No longer able to wrench anymore, so enjoy watching others do the trade. Yes I am a subscriber. When I pulled wrenches as I called it, I found tools inside tires, engines extra parts they (previous mech) hid them in the pan or plumb forgot stuff on top of oil galley. I had a person come in and they said their engine "Jingled" when they started it.... tool hanging off of a wire because they plugged it in and then couldn't get wrench back.... tool had another shops name stenciled on it/LOL, but what worried me most was seeing wire from spool of number nine wire holding stuff on, the "as many zip ties as they could get on trick". After forty plus years, nothing surprised me. My worst one was officers wife comes in to have something done, I spot the frame is rusted in so many places and clearly separated in the steering sector. I told her car is no longer safe and for her to have it towed away.... her husband screams at me to let her drive it off... this one got real messy and .... long story short, I got sued, they won and I lost my licence as a mechanic in Anchorage. Ray as you levered to get out the strut the first time, I thought you was pulling the brake flexi hose a bit hard for my liking and a second time on the way back in, it maybe camera angle (and you may have seen this in the edit) In the UK our +3yrs old cars are inspected every year and Taxis 2 to 4 times a year and this year we have had a spate of brake line fails for some reason, (we are seaside and south west England one of the wettest places apart from everywhere else in the UK) but we have had to have a workshop meeting to discuss this problem.

Over here in the UK you can't buy the complete strut with the spring fitted,we would have to compress the spring and remove it them fit the new shock absorber, even if we wanted to fit a new spring we would still have to remove the nut from the shock and reuse it. That looks a very clean low mileage expedition you are working on.

Was doing that this weekend, not to replace the struts, but to replace the top mount, as the one was noisy, so both spent a few minutes out of the car, and the compressors were used for the 30 second swap action required. New ones mean the springs are now at the right height, as the old ones had collapsed about 30mm on each side. no more noises now, along with the cleaning of the carburettor and adjusting mixture as well. This weekend the water pump and thermostat are going for a change, standard VW Golf service part, easier to do the lot than the parts, 4 bolts as opposed to 15.
@rich917104 күн бұрын
My guess, giving all parties the benefit of the doubt, the other shop inspected it, and the installer slapped it back together to roll it out of the service bay while they waited for parts. Customer called and said "I want my truck" and the service writer released it without realizing the installer hadn't fully assembled it. I'd be checking that rear suspension as well, if the other shop inspected it, I'm sure you did. I just can't imagine the other shop intentionally sending it out just because they were mad they lost the job. Never assign to malice what can be attributed to incompetence ;)

Q: in this case is a wheel alignment after strut replacement necessary? It seems to me that the alignment is uneffected by the strutposition. That's different with McPherson style struts.- Answers are appreciated.
@djsi38t4 күн бұрын
Yes,just the difference of the old to the new is enough to change alignment....Actually alignments are suggested with any front end parts being changed.Even when it seems that it would not be necessary.But in this case it absolutely needs to be checked.Alignment can be knocked out very easily...not by much but the alignment machines are very sensitive today..

Just curious, do you run a torque wrench over the wheel nuts before moving the vehicle, after wheels are back on? Good video, love suspension work 😊. Cheers

It could have been they had it apart and just stuck it back together to move it out of the shop until parts came. Meantime, the customer came to take it, the advisor didn't know it was like that. Who knows. Many times I had to put things back together to free up my hoist, and may only finger tighten fasteners. Trick is, put a big note on the instrument cluster that says DO NOT DRIVE, or DO NOT CRANK OR START, so everybody knows.
@russellstyles53814 күн бұрын
