I bought a 1987 K20 Suburban (new), and it had the same, crappy, semi-floating rear end in it as this van, but with an Eaton limited-slip system. It grenaded at 84,000 miles, destroying the spider and side gears, all of the bearings, the cover, and badly scoring the (4.10) ring and pinion. I never towed anything, nor overloaded or abused the axle in any way. I replaced the entire assembly with a full-floating axle assembly from a 3/4-ton pickup, but it had 3.08 gears. I installed new aftermarket, super-duper 4.10 gears, new Timken bearings, SKF seals, and a Detroit Locker. I set it all up and installed it in about four hours. I use Amsoil 75W140 full synthetic oil with GM's Positraction additive, changed every 50,000 miles. It's still just fine at 560,000 miles. And counting... ...And I find only the tiniest amount of grey goo on the magnet when I service the unit. GM's 14-bolt semi-floater is pure, unadulterated fecal matter. The 14-bolt full-floater, though, is better than any other light-truck axle extant.

It's nice to see a pro use vacuum bleeding successfully. I used vacuum a few times but was irritated by air escaping around threads. As you say, I should just not worry about continuing air bubbles even with silicone paste on the tube nipple. Pressure bleeding would be nice but even with quality kits there are all kinds of different MC reservoir cap sizes, so you end up needing a whole inventory of adapters. For those who don't do it every day, a two-person bleed with brake pedal pressure works OK. The new challenge will be having the scan tool to relax the emergency brake, the game moves on even if we don't want to.
@mikeznel60483 жыл бұрын
Smart move by that business having the whole fleet sent in to be maintained and repaired. The cost of properly maintaining and repairing right when an issue arises is far less than the cost of major repairs associated with a brake down. Factor in lost work and income due to break down, towing fees and extra money for more parts and labor, this is the wise choice indeed. The time a break down costs you also adds up as time is money and trucks sitting on flat beds and at shops cost more than just maintaining the vehicle properly. It's nice nice you have somebody come in for work and just let you fix what's wrong and not nickel and dime the vehicle until it fails catastrophically. A smooth ride and a/c do wonders for employees too. When they have a nice work truck/van, they tend to take better care of them and are happier at work. Wise move and it's a win win situation for everybody.

I would only top up the brake fluid if the pads have been changed, because down the line, the next guy that changes the pads is going to push the pistons back into the calipers so he can get his new pads in and if the fluid has been topped out with the pistons already extended, that fluid will push back up the lines and out the top of the reservoir. Plus, the brake fluid level warning light should come on when the pads are worn, if you top up the level with partly worn pads, the low fluid level warning won’t come on before the pads are down to the backing and they’re wearing the discs out.
