The coating on the “purple, blue” fasteners is called “color chromate”. It’s available in various colors to meet production applications of the customer.. It offers excellent protection of the fastener. Another key benefit is the “lubricity” it offers in movement, friction and reduces thread galling potential during install and removal of the fastener. (I spent 25 years in the fastener biz).
@MrWoodyBalto3 жыл бұрын
Might they also be used to indicate a specific torque value? The worker doing assembly would know all the purple bolts get torqued to X.
@RainmanRaysRepairs3 жыл бұрын

@sneaks013 жыл бұрын
@@MrWoodyBalto Yes, definitely! Like I indicated, various colors can mean different things to different customers based on their production requirements, since each “connection/joint” is different and can have various torque/tension requirements. That appears to be a newer toyota camry (current gen). Its new enough they wouldnt total it out yet. Not enough depreciation, and the labor (so far) hasnt been bad. If that was all twisted and mangled and then rusted together on top of that, it might be another story. A car that new wouldnt be that rusted up yet though. For it to be totalled, the damage would need to be catastrophic. Think primary frame damage. Unibody vehicles like that are very difficult to repair frame damage on. The air bags not having gone off probably also saved it. Of course, I have no way of knowing whether they did actually total it or not, but that all is my guess just from seeing the damage so far.

You saw when Ray was inside the car, no airbags went off. Thus, it wasn't totaled and gets repaired! Most airbags protect from frontal collisions. If you get hit pretty hard from the side or back, the damage has to be worse than what totals a vehicle from the front. I think the whole situation is stupid! Fix a car with a frontal collision that airbags went off in, just make sure you document that it's fixed up to the manufacturer's "like new" safety standards. The manufacturers won't certify that a repaired wteck is that well repaired! I think Insurance companies should step into the breach here.

That's one nice way of designing a sway bar link. It usually is a one time install cos you have to slice it apart if you wanna take it out next time... Or you can try and vice grip the middle so the shaft doesn't rotate as you turn the nut. There is a hex at the tip but it's usually so rusted it's useless to try and use that, you'll just round it off...

Unless the brake assist is electric or the car is a Mercedes with the brake by wire, brakes will work with no power. Vacuum assist has a vacuum reservoir that provides assist for a minimum of two stops. The Mercedes Brake By Wire has an hydraulic back up system that will stop the car eventually. There was a recall on every car with the misbegotten system. Even Rolls-Royce with the hydraulic suspension has enough reserve pressure to give brakes for a minimum of 45 pumps on the pedal. On a normal car, even if the is no vacuum, the hydraulic brakes will work like car brakes used to. You develop leg muscles. You haven't lived until you have driven up and down the Rocky Mountains in a car with unassisted recirculating ball steering and unassisted 4 wheel drum brakes. I earned these grey hairs!

I remember the pain of doing something as simple as removing license plate bolts or changing shock absorbers (having to split shock nuts). Colorado cars don't get rust proofing, etc. Cars don't rust or a very minor amount. Back in northern Ohio my brothers are shocked when I drive home to visit to not see rustproofing like I really screwed up. Then I point out my 5 year old car looks almost new underneath while their 1 year old car with coating is already showing signs of rust. Humidity and salt really mess up cars in those areas. I don't miss that.
